Collected Poems of Rudyard Kipling - Rudyard Kipling

Introduction and Notes by R.T. Jones, Honorary Fellow of the University of York. This edition of the poetry of Rudyard Kipling (1865-1936) includes all the poems contained in the Definitive Edition of 1940. In his lifetime, Kipling was widely regarded as the unofficial Poet Laureate, and he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1907. His poetry is striking for its many rhythms and popular forms of speech, and Kipling was equally at home with dramatic monologues and extended ballads. He is often thought of as glorifying war, militarism, and the British Empire, but an attentive reading of the poems does not confirm that view. This edition reprints George Orwell''s hard-hitting account of Kipling''s poems, first published in 1942, and generally regarded as one of the most important contributions to critical discussion of Kipling.

The Man Who Would Be King: Selected Stories of Rudyard Kipling - Rudyard Kipling

Rudyard Kipling is one of the most magical storytellers in the English language. This new selection brings together the best of his short writings, following the development of his work over fifty years. They take us from the harsh, cruel, vividly realized world of the ''Indian'' stories that made his name, through the experimental modernism of his middle period to the highly-wrought subtleties of his later pieces. Including the tale of insanity and empire, ''The Man Who Would Be King'', the high-spirited ''The Village that Voted the Earth Was Flat'', the fable of childhood cruelty and revenge ''Baa Baa, Black Sheep'', the menacing psychological study ''Mary Postgate'' and the ambiguous portrayal of grief and mourning in ''The Gardener'', here are stories of criminals, ghosts, femmes fatales, madness and murder.

Captains Courageous - Rudyard Kipling

Rudyard Kipling's 1897 book Captains Courageous chronicles the exploits of fifteen-year-old Harvey Cheyne Jr., the privileged son of a railroad magnate, who is saved from drowning in the North Atlantic by a Portuguese fisherman. The novel was first published in McClure's as a serial in the November 1896 issue, with the final episode appearing in May 1897. The full work was then released that year as a novel, first by Doubleday in the United States and then by Macmillan a month later in the United Kingdom. It is the only book by Kipling that is totally set in North America. Teddy Roosevelt praised the book and Kipling for "depicting in the liveliest fashion just what a boy should be and do" in his essay "What We Can Expect of the American Kid" from 1900. "The Man Who Would Be King" is a captivating novella written by Rudyard Kipling, the renowned British author. Published in 1888, the story follows the adventures of two ex-British soldiers, Daniel Dravot and Peachey Carnehan, as they set out on a daring quest to become kings of Kafiristan, a remote region in Afghanistan. The novel showcases Kipling's mastery of storytelling, vivid descriptions, and rich character development. The narrative presents a thought-provoking examination of imperialism and its impact on both the colonizers and the colonized. Kipling delves into questions of identity and the inherent flaws of human ambition, ultimately questioning the price one must pay for attempting to transcend one's station. With its compelling plot, evocative imagery, and profound themes, "The Man Who Would Be King" remains a powerful exploration of human nature and the consequences of unchecked ambition, solidifying Kipling's status as a literary master.

Kipling - Rudyard Kipling

Rudyard Kipling (1865-1936) is perhaps the most controversial major English poetof the last two centuries, not least because of his apparent enthusiasm for the empire. A child of British India, he first became famous for tales of imperial life, notably Kim, the Jungle Book and Barrack Room Ballads. Kipling wrote verse in every classical form from the epigram to the ode, but his most distinctive gift was for the ballads and narrative poems in which he draws vivid characters in universal situations and articulates profound truths in plain language. Yet he was also a subtle and deeply affecting anatomist of the human heart, with a feeling for the natural world which rivals his younger contemporary, D. H. Lawrence. Shattered by World War I in which he lost his only son, his work darkens and deepens in later years, but never loses its extraordinary vitality.

Selected Poems - Rudyard Kipling

Rudyard Kipling (1865-1936) is often regarded as the unofficial Laureate of the British Empire. Yet his writing reveals a ferociously independent figure at times violently opposed to the dominant political and literary tendencies of his age. Arranged in chronological order, this diverse selection of his poetry shows the development of Kipling''s talent, his deepening maturity and the growing sombreness of his poetic vision. Ranging from early, exhilarating celebrations of British expansion overseas, including ''Mandalay'' and ''Gunga Din'', to the dignified and inspirational ''If -'' and the later, deeply moving ''Epitaphs of the War'' - inspired by the death of Kipling''s only son - it clearly illustrates the scope and originality of his work. It also offers a compelling insight into the Empire both at its peak and during its decline in the early years of the twentieth century.

He gained immense popularity, becoming (as these stories indicate) the knowledgeable spokesman for a wide public.Later, although Kipling''s right-wing views increasingly incurred hostility, his creativity remained formidable. In this rich collection, we encounter bold realism, poignant nostalgia, dark comedy, the vividly horrific, the exuberantly fanciful and the disturbingly uncanny.

Paragon of English virtues or racist imperialist? Andrew Lycett (acclaimed biographer of Ian Fleming) has returned to primary sources to tell the intricate story of a misunderstood genius who became Britain''s most famous and highest earning author. Among the many new sources, Lycett has discovered previously unpublished letters that illuminate Kipling''s crucial years in India, his first girlfriend (the model for Mrs Hauksbee of Plain Tales from the Hills), his parents'' decision to send him back to England to boarding school; and in his adult life his use of opium, his frustrating times in London and the brief peace he found in America before the devastating loss of both his young daughter and, in the First World War, his son. Lycett also uncovers the extraordinary story of Kipling''s great love for Flo Garrard, daughter of the crown jeweller, and unravels the complicated yet enthralling saga of the American family the Balestiers, and of Carrie Balestier who became Kipling''s wife. This biography is full of new material on Kipling''s financial dealings with Lord Beaverbrook, his friendships with T.E. First published in 1921, this volume collects some of the most comical stories Kipling published throughout his writing career. These tales derive their humour from absurd situations – a drunken Irish soldier waking up to find himself worshipped as a god in the Indian holy city of Benares, a monkey let loose in an English village – and from lampooning the attitudes and discourses of the time. While presenting many aspects which will be familiar to Kipling readers – rollicking adventures, exotic locales and an interest in the animal world – these Humorous Tales explore the more light-hearted and amusing side to the great master’s work.

The Jungle Book - Rudyard Kipling

Among the best loved of all classics for children are the tales of Mowgli, the boy who learned the law of the jungle as he grew up among a pack of wolves in India''s Seeonee Hills. First published in 1894, the book imagines a child living and flourishing in a community of animals - an idea that perhaps had its origin in Kipling''s unhappy childhood. ''His stories are not animal stories in the realistic sense; they are wonderful, beautiful fairy tales, '' wrote Ernest Thompson Seton, the great Canadian naturalist. Kurt Wiese''s illustrations, commissoned by the American firm of Doubleday in 1932, have never appeared in Britain before. The Everyman Chesterton - Gilbert Keith Chesterton

Included here are some of the well-loved Father Brown detective stories, surely among the best in the genre, and a range of poetry, serious and light-hearted - Chesterton wrote some of the best nonsense and satirical verse in the language. The main bias of the selection, however, will be towards his non-fictional prose, where, Dr Ker argues, his real greatness lies. In that sense he is the successor of the great Victorian ''Sages'', Carlyle, Arnold, Ruskin and Newman. Selections will be made from his studies of Victorian literature (particularly his classic essays on Dickens, originally published by Everyman), his critical biographies of St Francis of Assisi, St Thomas Aquinas and William Cobbett; his apologetic classics Orthodoxy and The Everlasting Man, his journalistic essays (a form in which he excelled) and from his best political and social criticism, with particular emphasis on his championing of the common man and the masses against virtually all the intellectuals of his day. Edited and introduced by an expert in the field, this substantial volume promises to bring its author back into prominence with a thorough intellectual and literary reassessment of his achievements
