The fates of two unforgettable women - one just beginning a journey of reckoning and self-discovery and the other completing her life's last vital act - intertwine in this ambitious and inventive debut set at the terminus of the Underground Railroad. Freedom, you can't get and bury, and keep it and keep it so it won't ever go away. No, child. You got to swing your freedom like a club. In 1859, deep in the forests of Canada, an elderly woman sits behind bars. She came to Dunmore via the Underground Railroad to escape enslavement, but an American bounty hunter tracked her down. Now she's in jail for killing him, and the fragile peace of Dunmore, a town settled by people fleeing the American south, hangs by a thread. Lensinda Martin, a smart young reporter, wants to gather the woman's testimony before she can be condemned, but the old woman has no time for confessions. Instead she proposes a barter: a story for a story. As the women swap stories - of family and first loves, of survival and freedom against all odds - Lensinda must face her past. And it seems the old woman may carry a secret that could shape Lensinda's destiny. Travelling along the path of the Underground Railroad from the American South to British Canada, from the Indigenous nations around the Great Lakes, to the Black refugee communities of Canada, In the Upper Country is an unforgettable debut about the interwoven history of peoples in North America, slavery and resistance, and two women reckoning with the stories they've been given, and the ones they want to tell.

The Tale of a Wall - Nasser Abu Srour
A Palestinian prisoner’s memoir of thirty years’ captivity, and a love letter to the wall that encircles and comforts him This is the story of a wall that somehow chose me as the witness of what it said and didNasser Abu Srour grew up in a refugee camp in the West Bank, on the outskirts of Bethlehem. As a child, he played in its shadow and explored the little world within the camp. As he grew older, he began questioning the boundaries that limited his existence.Later, sentenced to life in prison, with no hope of parole, he found himself surrounded by a physical wall. This is the story of how, over thirty years in captivity, he crafted a new definition of freedom. Turning to writings by philosophers as varied as Derrida, Kirkegaard and Freud, he begins to let go of freedom as a question that demanded an answer, in order to preserve it as a dream. The wall becomes his stable point of reference, his anchor, both physically and psychologically. As each year brings with it new waves of releases of prisoners, he dares to hope, and seeks refuge in the wall when these hopes are dashed. And, in a small miracle, he finds love with a lawyer from the outside – while in her absence, the wall is his solace and his curse.A testimony of how the most difficult of circumstances can build a person up instead of tearing them down, The Tale of a Wall is an extraordinary record of the vast confinement and power of the mind.

Válka za studena/Serving it cold - Vladimír Birgus, Josef Moucha
This is the first publication in book form of the photographic set Serving It Cold: Photographs from Basic Training in the Czechoslovak People's Army. It is a parable about whirling round a core of nothingness. The photographs reveal the world of men dragged into a trap that pretends to be a game about being soldiers. Today, many years after they were first taken, these original photographs by Josef Moucha seem like ghostly dirty tricks, staged with numerous extras in expensive stage sets. In fact, they are shots taken at the start of the 1980s, an unembellished, realistic look from inside. The photographs are introduced by Vladimír Birgus, a respected photographer and expert on photography: ‘It is the complexity of Moucha's photographic diary from the army which contributes to his photographs evoking a geyser of recollections in everyone who experienced compulsory military service under Communist rule.' ‘Unique amongst Czech documentary photographs,' he remarks, ‘the set provides a many-layered view of compulsory military service in the years of the restored hard-line Communist regime, after the crushing of the Prague Spring reform movement in August 1968. In quality, size, and authenticity it is unparalleled in Czech post-war photography. [...] Their importance has become more evident with the passing of so many years, because they are not only the photographic diary of one conscript; they are also wide-ranging testimony about that period and about the conflict between individualism and totalitarianism.'

Vietnam - Max Hastings
THE SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLER‘His masterpiece’ Antony Beevor, Spectator‘A masterful performance’ Sunday Times‘By far the best book on the Vietnam War’ Gerald Degroot, The Times, Book of the YearVietnam became the Western world’s most divisive modern conflict, precipitating a battlefield humiliation for France in 1954, then a vastly greater one for the United States in 1975. Max Hastings has spent the past three years interviewing scores of participants on both sides, as well as researching a multitude of American and Vietnamese documents and memoirs, to create an epic narrative of an epic struggle. He portrays the set pieces of Dienbienphu, the Tet offensive, the air blitz of North Vietnam, and less familiar battles such as the bloodbath at Daido, where a US Marine battalion was almost wiped out, together with extraordinary recollections of Ho Chi Minh’s warriors. Here are the vivid realities of strife amid jungle and paddies that killed 2 million people. Many writers treat the war as a US tragedy, yet Hastings sees it as overwhelmingly that of the Vietnamese people, of whom forty died for every American. US blunders and atrocities were matched by those committed by their enemies. While all the world has seen the image of a screaming, naked girl seared by napalm, it forgets countless eviscerations, beheadings and murders carried out by the communists. The people of both former Vietnams paid a bitter price for the Northerners’ victory in privation and oppression. Here is testimony from Vietcong guerrillas, Southern paratroopers, Saigon bargirls and Hanoi students alongside that of infantrymen from South Dakota, Marines from North Carolina, Huey pilots from Arkansas. No past volume has blended a political and military narrative of the entire conflict with heart-stopping personal experiences, in the fashion that Max Hastings’ readers know so well. The author suggests that neither side deserved to win this struggle with so many lessons for the 21st century about the misuse of military might to confront intractable political and cultural challenges. He marshals testimony from warlords and peasants, statesmen and soldiers, to create an extraordinary record.

The Gardener´s Year - Karel Čapek
From the internationally acclaimed Czech writer Karel Capek comes this beautifully written and marvelously apt account of the trials and tribulations of the gardener s life. First published in Prague in 1929, The Gardener s Year combines a richly comic portrait of life in the garden, narrated month by month, with a series of delightful illustrations by the author s older brother and collaborator, Josef. Capek s gardeners all too human, despite their lofty aspirations often look the fool, whether they be found sopping wet, victims of the cobralike water hose, or hunched over, hands immersed in the soil, presenting their rumps to the splendid azure sky. In their repeated folly, Capek gives us not only cause for laughter but also, in the end, testimony of the imperishable and miraculous optimism of the human race. This Modern Library edition is published with a new Introduction by Verlyn Klinkenborg, a New York Times editorialist and the author of Making Hay and The Last Fine Time."

Bloodlands - Timothy Snyder
A powerful and revelatory history book about the bloodlands - the lands that lie between Stalin''s Russia and Hitler''s Germany - where 14 million people were killed during the years 1933 - 1944.In the middle of Europe, in the middle of the twentieth century, the Nazi and Soviet regimes murdered fourteen million people in the bloodlands between Berlin and Moscow. In a twelve-year-period, in these killing fields - today''s Ukraine, Belarus, Poland, Western Russia and the eastern Baltic coast - an average of more than one million citizens were slaughtered every year, as a result of deliberate policies unrelated to combat. In this book Timothy Snyder offers a ground-breaking investigation into the motives and methods of Stalin and Hitler and, using scholarly literature and primary sources, pays special attention to the testimony of the victims, including the letters home, the notes flung from trains, the diaries on corpses. The result is a brilliantly researched, profoundly humane, authoritative and original book that forces us to re-examine one of the greatest tragedies in European history and re-think our past.

You Will Not have My Hate - Antoine Leiris
This inspiring and courageous book is a guiding star for us all in troubled times. One night last winter, Antoine Leiris was at home looking after his son while his wife, Hélene, was at a concert with friends. Suddenly he started receiving text messages asking if he was ok. Turning on the TV, Antoine watched the terrorist attacks in Paris unfolding around him and tried to call Hélene. She didn't answer. That night Hélene was killed, along with 88 other people, at the Bataclan Theatre. Three days later, Antoine wrote an open letter to his wife's killers on Facebook. He refused to be cowed or to let his baby son's life be defined by their acts. ‘For as long as he lives, this little boy will insult you with his happiness and freedom,' he wrote. Instantly, that short post caught fire and was shared thousands of times around the world. You Will Not Have My Hate is an extraordinary and heartbreaking memoir which teaches us how to respond to a world full of hatred with generosity and love. The Chain - Chimene Suleyman
In January 2017, Chimene Suleyman was on her way to an abortion clinic in Queens, New York with her boyfriend, the father of her nascent child. It was the last day they would spend together. In an extraordinary sequence of events, Chimene was to discover the truth of her boyfriend's life: that she and many other women had been subtly, patiently and painfully betrayed. In this spellbinding memoir, she exposes one man's control over many women and the trauma he left behind, and celebrates the sisterhood that formed in his wake despite - and in spite of - him. Exploring how women are duped every day by individuals, she interrogates how society itself continually allows this to happen. She demonstrates that, no matter how intelligent, educated or self-aware they might be, over time a woman can be played into performing the age-old role of giver and nurturer: self-sacrificing and subordinate. Both a devastating personal testimony and a searing indictment of persistent misogyny, The Chain is a book for any woman who has questioned her relationship and buried her doubts, for any woman who can't quite identify the source of her unease and for any woman who has been sheltered by the fierce protection of her female friends.

Parallel Lines : A Journey from Childhood to Belsen - Lantos Peter
"I have read few autobiographies more extraordinary . . . Astonishing" OBSERVER "A classic. I preferred it to Primo Levi's If This is a Man" EDWARD WILSON "A child's clear-eyed journey to hell" ANNE SEBBA This is a story of a young boy's journey from a sleepy provincial town in Hungary during the Second World War to the concentration camp in Bergen-Belsen. After a winter in Bergen-Belsen where his father died, he and his mother were liberated by the Americans outside a small German village, and handed over to the Red Army. They escaped from the Russians, and travelled, hiding on a goods train, through Prague to Budapest. Unlike other books dealing with this period, this is not a Holocaust story, but a child's recollection of a journey full of surprise, excitement, bereavement and terror. Yet this remains a testimony of survival, overcoming obstacles which to adults may seem insurmountable but to a child were just part of an adventure and, ultimately, recovery. After having established a career in the West, the author decided to revisit the stages on his earlier journeys, reliving the past through the perspective of the present. Along the way, ghosts from the past are finally laid to rest by the kindness of new friends. With an introduction by Lisa Appignanesi

Skryté významy a jinotaje, jimiž Martinů naznačoval své postoje, aby dopisy unikly cenzuře, objasňují detailní komentáře editorů. Kniha zachycuje osobitý literární styl Martinů v autentické podobě bez korekcí a úprav, přináší faksimile dopisů a rozkrývá paralely v dopisech rodině, přátelům, a interpretům. The monograph documents the preserved correspondence between the composer Bohuslav Martinů and the poet Miloslav Bureš. It represents a unique testimony to their having working together on four cantatas: Opening of the Springs, The Legend of the Smoke from Potato Tops, A Dandelion Romance and Mikesh from the Mountains. Furthermore, it serves to document the sheer difficulties of communication between East and West in the second half of the 1950s. This period picture is supplemented and extended by the correspondence Martinů and Bureš conducted with other addressees, which duly reveals other meanings and nuances of that which the two artists communicated to each other.

Regional Glass Production and Imports in Central Europe in the 13th - 18th Centuries. Part II.
Spolu s prvním svazkem srovnává soudobou situaci v Brně a Wroclawi. Publikované sklo je dosud největším detailně zveřejněným souborem a dokresluje význam Chrudimi ve středověku. ----- Mediaeval archaeology has discovered large assemblages of mediaeval glass that have changed the assessment of the role of this commodity in the mediaeval household. Findings from seven houseplots of the historic core of town of Chrudim from the 13th - 17th centuries were evaluated. They demonstrate that sophisticated ways of dining were common in bourgeois households. From the 16th century onwards, the originally domestic glass was supplemented with luxury items from abroad. The picture of everyday life is completed by testimony of kitchen and table ceramics, stove tiles and metal inventory, as well as the transformations of bourgeois houses and the yards behind them. Together with first volume, it compares the contemporary situation in Brno a Wroclaw. The published glass is the largest detailed set published so far from Czech Republic and illustrates the importance of Chrudim in the Middle Ages.

Lest We Forget - Tessa Dunlop

A hundred individual histories, skillfully assembled, built into a poignant meditation on why they still matter.'' David OlusogaPublished for the eightieth anniversary of the end of World War Two, this moving book examines the inspirations and individuals behind our memorial-studded country. Acclaimed historian Tessa Dunlop travels the length and breadth of the United Kingdom on a quest to uncover a story of national warring and national mourning, of fighting each other and of fighting together. In so doing, Lest We Forget summons a stellar cast of veterans, military experts and families of the fallen to reveal what our monuments and war heroes say about us, both then and now.Why did Scotland take nearly 600 years to commemorate its most famous freedom fighter? When did Wellington become anti-Establishment? Who are the Glorious Dead? Can the Cenotaph stay above politics? And how do you commemorate contested, asymmetrical wars?Through veteran testimony and contemporary voices like Falklands hero Simon Weston and HRH The Duke of Kent, Tessa brings to life the pride and the pain involved in commemorating 2,000 years of war and peace across Scotland, England, Northern Ireland and Wales in a monumental British story.Lest We Forget, freedom is not free.''In this wonderfully incisive, moving and timely book about commemoration, Dunlop breathes life into 100 British monuments – some famous, others less so – that together reveal our island story. A stunning achievement.'' Saul David

A Brilliant Life - Rachelle Unreich
'A delicate, evocative story of strength and survival that turns on one of the most powerful forces in the known universe: a mother's love.' - Jonathan Freedland, author of The Escape Artist A powerful, true story of a Holocaust survivor told by her daughter - a tale that reminds us of the resilience of the soul and the ability of the heart to heal.Born in Czechoslovakia, Mira was only 12 years old when World War II broke out and 17 when the Nazis finally caught up with her. Torn apart from her family, she went on to survive four concentration camps, including Auschwitz, and a Death March when she was too weak to walk. She lived when almost everyone she knew did not.At 88, living in Australia, Mira is diagnosed with cancer and her daughter, a journalist, decides to interview her to distract her from her illness. As Mira gives her testimony Rachelle comes to understand how Mira's unique perspective - seeing her experiences through the lens of the goodness of the people who helped her - protected her from the depths of humanity's cruelty, and enabled her to go on to live a full and brilliant life.Rachelle also fits together the jigsaw pieces of her own life as a child of a survivor. She comes to understand that however different their lives have been, she and her mother are uniquely united by a fierce inner strength to live, and a mystery of strange things that always seem to happen around them.A beautiful story of love, loss, wonder and the deepest kind of trust in life, A Brilliant Life questions the role that fate, chance and destiny play. It is a tribute to family, a story of incredible resilience, and a chronicle of the deep connection between a mother and a child which not even death can destroy.

Helga's Dairy: A Young Girl's Account Of Life In Concentration Camp - Helga Wiess
'The most moving Holocaust diary published since Anne Frank' Daily Telegraph First they led us to the baths, where they took from us everything we still had. Quite literally there wasn't even a hair left. I didn't even recognize my own mother till I heard her voice . . . In 1941, aged 12, Helga Weiss, her mother and father were forced to say goodbye to their home, their relatives and all that they knew, and were interned in the Nazi concentration camp of Terezín. For the next three years, Helga documented her experiences there, and those of her friends and family, in a diary. Then they were sent to Auschwitz, and the diary was left behind, hidden in a wall. Helga was one of a tiny number of Jewish children from Prague to survive the holocaust. After she returned home, she eventually managed to retrieve her diary and completed the journal of her experiences. The result is one of the most vivid first-hand accounts of the Holocaust ever to have been recovered. 'Anne Frank's diary finished when her family was rounded up for the camps: in Helga's Diary, we have a child's record of life inside the extermination factories. Shines a light into the long black night that was the Holocaust' Daily Express 'Resounds with a ferocious will to endure conditions of astonishing cruelty. Displays a rare capacity to remain keenly observant and to find the right words for transmitting . . . memory into history' New Statesman 'A moving testimony to courage and endurance. Remarkable . . . what is so compelling is the immediacy and unknowingness' Financial Times Helga Weiss was born in Prague in 1929. Her father Otto was employed in the state bank and her mother Irena was a dressmaker. Of the 15,000 children brought to Terezín and later deported to Auschwitz, only 100 survived the Holocaust. Helga was one of them. On her return to Prague she studied art and is well known for her paintings. She has two children, three grandchildren and lives in the flat where she was born.
