Co se zprvu mohlo zdát dílem jako troufalost a dílem jako politická naivita, se už v listopadu téhož roku ukázalo být především občanskou od vahou a prozíravostí, když k jednacímu stolu zasedl tehdejší předseda vlády Ladislav Adamec a zástupci studentů, Občanského fóra a Veřejnosti proti násilí v čele s Václavem Havlem. Kocáb popisuje všechna zásadní jednání s komunistickými vládci, s generalitou československé i sovětské armády, se sovětskou stranou včetně zástupců KGB, která vedl či se jich účastnil za iniciativu MOST nebo Občanské fórum. Průběh sametové revoluce líčí na pozadí připravované akce Zásah, kterou se armádní složky ve spolupráci s StB snažily zabránit demokratizačním změnám silou. Autobiografický text působí trochu jako politický thriller. Autor popisuje, jak se situace měnila den po dni, hodinu po hodině, a ukazuje, že politika je tvůrčí a často i improvizační činnost, v níž občas není od věci brát na sebe „drzou“ odpovědnost. V druhé části knihy pak vzpomíná na svoje působení ve Sněmovně lidu Federálního shromáždění ČSFR a na druhý olbřímí úkol, který si předsevzal – prohlášení ostudné okupační smlouvy o „dočasném pobytu“ za neplatnou od samého počátku, kdy až urychlený odsun sovětských vojsk z území bývalého Československa definitivně završil sametovou revoluci. MICHAEL KOCÁB: Ještě během studií na konzervatoři založil Michael Kocáb legendární kapelu Pražský výběr, která se až do roku 1989 pohybovala na pomezí oficiální a neoficiální scény a mezi lety 1982 a 1987 nesměla vystupovat. V létě 1989 s Michalem Horáčkem založil iniciativu MOST, byl zakládajícím členem Občanského fóra, zahájil rozhovory s Generálním štábem Československé lidové armády a inicioval kroky k ukončení okupace Československa sovětskou armádou a volbě Václava Havla prezidentem. Od prosince 1989 působil jako poslanec Federálního shromáždění v zahraničním výboru a v prvních svobodných volbách v roce 1990 získal 56 % preferenčních hlasů a opět se stal poslancem. V letech 1993 až 2003 působil jako externí poradce Václava Havla, s nímž pak spolupracoval až do roku 2008, kdy přijal kandidaturu do senátu jako nezávislý senátor za Stranu zelených. O rok později byl jmenován ministrem pro lidská práva a národnostní menšiny a tento post zastával i na evropské úrovni během předsednictva České republiky v Evropské unii.
