Anna Karenina je krásná a inteligentní žena žijící ve spokojeném manželství. Její muž je bohatý, takže Anna netrpí materiálním nedostatkem – přesto se však začíná nudit. Při návštěvě rodiny svého bratra poznává mladého, ale lehkomyslného hraběte Vronského. Ten má sice známost s dívkou Kitty, ale elegantní Anna ho zcela okouzlí. Situace se vyhrotí, když Anna s Vronským otěhotní – teď už se o všem dozvídá i její muž a chce se s ní dát rozvést. Rozvodem by ale Anna přišla o syna Sergeje, kterého neskonale miluje, a proto odmítá. Po porodu však manžela i syna opouští a odjíždí s Vronským. Štěstí ale nedosáhne – časem se s milencem odcizují a Anně se navíc silně stýská po synovi. Lidé v jejím okolí ji vesměs odsuzují a Anna se cítí čím dál tím více osamělá. Duševně zcela vyčerpaná a zlomená žena nakonec vidí jediné východisko ve smrti a vrhá se pod vlak.
