More than two years later the newly created OCU remains unrecognised by the overwhelming majority of the world s Orthodox believers notwithstanding that it has in that time been been recognised as Orthodox by the Patriarchate of Alexandria and the Churches of Cyprus and Greece. But even this recognition has not been without significant dissenting voices. Among these is the Abbot of the renowned Kykkos monastery in Cyprus, Metropolitan Nikiforos. In this pithy text he eloquently explains why the actions of the Ecumenical Patriarchate have created a schism in the Orthodox Church worldwide and how in turn they reflect the promotion of a new ecclesiology that distorts the traditional understanding of the Orthodox Church as headed only by Christ Himself. He is clear that the only road to healing and unending schism is a return to a form of inter-Orthodox relations which respects both conciliarity and hierarchy. As a young priest, Robert Prevost was sent in 1981 to Rome to study church law at the Pontifical University of Saint Thomas (known as the Angelicum). There he earned a licentiate and composed a doctoral thesis, which made final in 1987. This is that thesis, the first book-length work composed by the man now known as Pope Leo XIV. Specifically, his study - drawing from sources in English, Italian, and Spanish and from medieval history and theology as well as canon law - focused on the role of the prior as the local superior in the Order of St. Augustine. In doing so, he describes a traditional notion of obedience in religious life - one based on love of the truth and growth in one s inner freedom to pursue holiness. At the center of his reflection are key ideas regarding the common good of the Church; the Eucharistic liturgy at the center of the life of the community; the role of hierarchy and consultation; and mutual respect for the diverse contributions of each person. Present in this text, moreover, is a far-reaching conception of the priesthood characterized by the triple munera: the priestly work of teaching, sanctification, and governance. Central to the whole volume is an Augustinian conception of the spiritual life that focuses on the inward work of grace, the primacy of the love of God, and inward conformity to Christ. The book s preface - composed by eminent theologian and present-day rector of the Angelicum, Fr. Thomas Joseph White, OP - helps frame the work for the wider public interested in it as a privileged window into the mind and heart of Prevost as a young priest, showing how its subject matter has implications for how one thinks about the life of the Catholic Church. There are clearly in this early work central themes regarding the life of Church, the apostolic tradition, and ecclesial authority in the service of the common good, that may well indicate directions and themes in the subsequent life and teaching of the author. Pod každým obrázkom je opis fotografie uvedený v dvoch jazykoch – maďarčine a nemčine a vyhradené právo na rozmnožovanie a meno fotografa. Fotografie boli umiestnené v ozdobnom kufríku z hrubých lepenkových dosiek potiahnutých červeným knihárskym plátnom, na ktorom je zlatým písmom plastickou razbou uvedený titul v maďarčine a nemčine: A Magas Tátrából / Die Hohe Tatra, Ung. Karpathenverein (Maďarský karpatský spolok). Kufrík obsahoval 30 fotografií. Mal rozmery: výška 26,0 cm, šírka 33,2 cm, hĺbka 4,5 cm Titulná stránka v dvoch jazykoch obsahuje názov albumu a meno autora fotografií. Tu sú tiež publikované početné ocenenia získané autorom fotografie na rôznych výstavách od roku 1869. Samozrejme, naše vydanie doznalo niekoľko zmien, daných nielen možnosťami súčasnej techniky, ale aj snahou umožniť širšej verejnosti mať v svojej knižnici doma nádherné Divaldovy fotografie. Vydanie v pôvodnej podobe v kufríkoch by bolo nákladné a v obmedzenom počte. Publikácia je teda v pevnej väzbe, pričom na obálke je obrázok pôvodného balenia fotografií. Originálna veľkosť fotografií je zachovaná a pridali sme aj popisky fotografií v slovenskom a anglickom jazyku. The photographs published in this book were published in 1887 and provided to us by the Slovak National Gallery in Bratislava. The original photographs measuring 15.6 x 11.8 cm were pasted on cartons measuring 30.6 x 23.7 cm. Below each image is a description of the photograph in two languages – Hungarian and German together with the reserved reproduction right and the name of the photographer. The photographs were placed in a decorative case made of thick cardboard plates covered with red book cloth, on which the title in Hungarian and German is engraved in gold lettering: A Magas Tátrából / Die Hohe Tatra, Ung. Karpathenverein (Hungarian Carpathian Association). The case contained 30 photographs. Its dimensions were: height 26.0 cm, width 33.2 cm, depth 4.5 cm The title page in two languages contains the title of the album and the name of the author of the photographs. Numerous awards won by the author of photography at various exhibitions since 1869 are also published here. Of course, our edition has undergone several changes, due not only to the possibilities of current technology, but also to the effort to allow the general public to have Divald s beautiful photographs in their library at home. An issue in its original form in cases would be expensive and limited in number. The publication is therefore in hardcover, while the cover contains a picture of the original package of photographs. The original size of the photos has been preserved and we have also added photo captions in Slovak and English. At the same time, we present here some biographical data about the author, Karol Divald.
