Pozoruhodným způsobem zde poodhaluje nejen stav a povahu lékařské vědy raného novověku, ale též intimní aspekty tehdejšího každodenního života. České vydání spisu z roku 1587 je dílem lékaře a profesora pražské Karlovy univerzity Adama Hubera z Riesenpachu (1545-1616), překladatele, jenž o necelé desetiletí později připravil také nový, rozšířený překlad slavného Mattioliho herbáře, vybavený mnohojazyčnými rejstříky. Zejména pro své zásluhy na formování odborného českého jazyka byl Huber obrozenci oslavován jako "Melanchthon naší vlasti". Nová edice Huberova překladu se snaží napravit nedostatky předchozích vydání z 18. a 20. století.
