Audiokniha: Komentář k původní LP 1 18 2363 z roku 1978: V roce 1845 napsal Robert Browning, tehdy ještě málo známý anglický básník, mnohými považovaný za stěží srozumitelného excentrika, dopis slečně Elizabeth Barrettové, tehdy již proslulé básnířce, jejíž verše se těšily značné popularitě. V dopise ji poděkoval za to, že ve své poslední sbírce citovala s porozuměním jeho verše, a zároveň vyjádřil svůj obdiv k její poezii. Důvodem k napsání dopisu bylo v neposlední řadě i básníkovo dobré srdce - o slečně Barrettové se vědělo, že je vážně nemocná a nikdy neopouští svůj pokoj. Tento dopis, na který Elizabeth Barrettová odpověděla, měl pro život obou korespondentů dalekosáhlé následky. Začali si psát pravidelně - málo sdílný a velmi rezervovaný básník nalezl konečně někoho, komu se mohl svěřovat se svými plány, myšlenkami a záměry, a chorobně plachá žena, která se s výjimkou své rodiny stýkala se světem jen prostřednictvím korespondence, přemohla svůj ostych natolik, že o půl roku později povolila svému příteli z dopisů první návštěvu. Psali si téměř každý den po dobu půldruhého roku a napsali mimoděk (na 1200 stranách) příběh vlastní lásky, o které do poslední chvíle nevěděli, jak skončí. Bylo třeba nejdříve překonat úzkosti a obavy nemocné ženy, o šest let starší než Browning, že svým spojením s milovaným mužem přinese do jeho života jen zármutek a starosti, a také vyrovnat se s nepřekonatelným odporem jejího podivínského otce, který tvrdě požadoval, aby žádné z jeho jedenácti dospělých dětí neuzavíralo sňatek. Nakonec se musela dát Elizabeth Baarrettová s Browningem tajně oddat a odjela s ním do Itálie. Usadili se nejdříve v Pise a později ve Florencii, kde se jim narodil syn Robert Wiedermann, později známý malíř. V Itálii strávili patnáct let svého manželství, až do smrti E. B. Browningové, která zemřela ve Florencii v roce 1861. Robert Browning měl v době, kdy napsal první dopis E. Barrettové, za sebou vydání dramatické básně Paracelsus, básnický epos Sordello a první malé svazečky pásma lyrické a epické poezie, které nazval Zvonky a granátová jablka. Byla v nich jedna z jeho nejlepších básní Pippa jde mimo. Za svého pobytu v Itálii vytvořil řadu dramatických monologů, které vydal v obsáhlé sbírce Muži a ženy. Po smrti E. B. Browningové se usadil znovu v Londýně, aby poskytl synovi anglickou výchovu. Ještě za pobytu v Itálii ho zaujala drobná knížka líčící kdysi proslavený hrdelní proces a osudy jeho protagonistů. Browning zachytil průběh této hrdelní pře ve směle koncipované básni o 20 000 veršů, kterou nazval Prsten a kniha. Současníci, kritici, i čtenáři vytýkali dlouho jeho poezii přílišnou složitost, nesrozumitelnost, přetíženost historickými narážkami a metaforami. Nakonec jej však přece uznání neminulo. Po souborném vydání proslulost jeho díla časem vzrůstala (dožil se 82 let) a vyvrcholila založením Browningovské společnosti, jejímiž členy se stala řada jeho vynikajících současníků. Z díla E. B. Browninové přetrvává dosud rozsáhlý epos Aurora Leigh. Dějovou osnovou je velmi poplatný své době, ale jeho jádro tvoří již moderní svár mezi přáním ženy stát se pomocí své práce samostatnou ucelenou osobností a její touhou najít životní naplnění v lásce k milovanému muži. Nejvíce čteno a vydáváno je však oněch 44 dokonalých milostných sonetů - jak je nazval R. M. Rilke -, které vznikaly téměř souběžně s její korespondencí s Robertem Browningem a pod názvem Portugalské sonety jsou známy milovníkům poezie na celém světě. Korespondence Roberta Browninga a E. B. Barrettové vyšla v obsáhlém výboru v nakladatelství Odeon pod názvem Milý pane Browningu. Tyto dopisy, které si vyměnili v období let 1845 a 1846, tvoří zákonitou část literárního odkazu obou básníků. S niternou naléhavostí a vůlí k pravdě je v nich zachyceno v co věřili, doufali a co jeden v druhém nalezli. Hana Žantovská Každé zveřejnění soukromé korespondence je záležitostí nejen literární, nýbrž především etickou. Jestliže jsme se rozhodli zařadit korespondenci Elisabeth Barrettové s Robertem Browningem do repertoáru Violy (premiéru měla pod názvem Mé nebe za tvou zem 14. prosince 1973 a těší se dosud zájmu publika), bylo to také proto, že oba básníci se nevyhýbali tématu vzájemného vztahu ani ve svých verších. V nich jej zjevili - především básnířka - už svým současníkům, i když třeba pod průhlednou kamufláží: Elisabet Barrett Browningová nazvala své básně Portugalské sonety a vydávala je za překlad. Autorčiny verše zpětně vyvolaly zájem také o korespondenci. A tu se ukázalo, že milostné sonety slečny Barrettové - jedny z nejkrásnějších milostných sonetů světové poezie - jsou básnickou parafrází jejích dopisů. Z této skutečnosti vychází i náš scénář (jeho původní, dvojnásobná verze připravená pro Violu vznikla ve spolupráci s překladatelkou Hanou Žantovskou, která pro tento účel vybrala a přeložila básně Roberta Browninga). Dopis je proto doplňován, komentován, zobecněn, povýšen ze soukromého sdělení k objektivní hodnotě literární právě vřaz

A Shorter Ulysses was intended to serve as a companion volume to Burgess s A Shorter Finnegans Wake, which he was commissioned to create in 1966. This is the first time that Burgess s shortened version of James Joyce s Ulysses has been published. Describing this commission in his autobiography, Burgess explains that he was asked to create a beginner s abridged version of about 200 pages with a commentary to link the passages of Joyce s original text and an explanatory preface. The surviving notes towards A Shorter Ulysses suggest that Burgess envisaged that A Shorter Ulysses would follow a similar format. The document was discovered in Burgess s house in Bracciano, which was purchased in the early 1970s, and thus probably date from this period. Also included in this volume is Burgess s Introduction to Ulysses for a 1982 Book Club Associates edition of the novel. In a brilliant essay opening the book, Burgess manages to convey in just under 3000 words the very essence of the work. His concluding words are: We are, having overcome its difficulties, at last free to appreciate its humour and humanity. Its early denouncers saw mostly filth and ugliness. We can hear its music and rejoice in its tolerance and decency and, yes, affection for fallen man . Last, but certainly not least, this volume includes The Blooms of Dublin, a musical play by Burgess, based on Ulysses. It was first broadcast on BBC radio and Radio Telefis Eireann in February 1982 to celebrate the hundredth birthday of James Joyce, and it was published for the first time in 1986. Burgess had begun developing the work as early as the mid 1960s and, according to him, a draft of the libretto and score had been completed as early as 1971. The draft score was subsequently converted by Burgess into a complete orchestral work in preparation for the radio broadcast. Burgess s biographer and Director of the International Burgess Foundation, Andrew Biswell, provides a foreword to this fascinating volume.
