Důvodem k napsání dopisu bylo v neposlední řadě i básníkovo dobré srdce - o slečně Barrettové se vědělo, že je vážně nemocná a nikdy neopouští svůj pokoj. Tento dopis, na který Elizabeth Barrettová odpověděla, měl pro život obou korespondentů dalekosáhlé následky. Začali si psát pravidelně - málo sdílný a velmi rezervovaný básník nalezl konečně někoho, komu se mohl svěřovat se svými plány, myšlenkami a záměry, a chorobně plachá žena, která se s výjimkou své rodiny stýkala se světem jen prostřednictvím korespondence, přemohla svůj ostych natolik, že o půl roku později povolila svému příteli z dopisů první návštěvu.
