Stejně jako její bratři i Esther popisuje svět zalidněný rabíny a studenty ješivy, gangstery i socialistickými rebely, pouličními prodavači a švadlenkami. Ale především - a v tom se Singerová od svých bratrů liší - vyjadřuje ve své próze hořkou frustraci hrdinky, jíž je jako pouhé dívce zapovězeno vzdělání, je jen lepší služkou v domácnosti svých rodičů a nakonec ji čeká smutné "vysvobození" v podobě dohodnutého sňatku.
