Během tvrdého vymývání mozku, jemuž byl v zajetí vystaven, se setkal s mnoha německými důstojníky, kteří v zajetí přistoupili na komunistickou ideologii; někteří z nich se potom stali čelnými představiteli nového německého státu pod sovětským vlivem - Německé demokratické republiky (za všechny jmenujme Waltera Ulbrichta). Kniha dobře dokumentuje nejen brutalitu sovětského režimu, ale také - svou zákonitou jednostranností - i způsob uvažování německých vojenských představitelů za války.
