Politics and Memory - Akela Reason
A rich history of Gilded Age partisan politics, aesthetics, and the creation of New York City⠙s Civil War monuments  In the decades following the Civil War, New York City built more monuments to the Union cause than any other city in the nation outside of Washington, DC. Ranging from simple standing soldiers to grand triumphal arches and temples, these monuments shaped commemorative aesthetics and iconography at the local and national levels. Unlike Confederate monuments, which were mostly initiated by private organizations, New York⠙s soldiers⠙ monuments were largely supported through city and state funding. These civic projects attracted the interest of competing groups, including artists, politicians, veterans, and the public, that all sought to influence the growing commemorative landscape. Works such as the Brooklyn Soldiers⠙ and Sailors⠙ Monument outside Prospect Park and the New York Soldiers⠙ and Sailors⠙ Monument in Riverside Park were created in a fractious political landscape and defined as much by municipal maneuvering as by artistic principle.  Illuminating the historical context of Civil War soldiers⠙ monuments in New York City, Akela Reason explores the complex and fascinating intersection of art, politics, and memory within these works, while also highlighting the ever-changing ways different constituencies have engaged with them in symbolic and physical terms.

Politics and the English Language - George Orwell
Politics and the English Language is widely considered Orwell s most important essay on style. Style, for Orwell, was never simply a question of aesthetics; it was always inextricably linked to politics and to truth. All issues are political issues, and politics itself is a mass of lies, evasions, folly, hatred and schizophrenia. When the general atmosphere is bad, language must suffer. Language is a political issue, and slovenly use of language and cliches make it easier for those in power to deliberately use misleading language to hide unpleasant political facts. Bad English, he believed, was a vehicle for oppressive ideology, and it is no accident that Politics and the English Language was written after the close of World War II.

Empathy in Politics and Leadership - Claire Yorke
A timely account of empathy, politics, and leadership, showing how greater understanding and connection can foster trust, community, and innovation  Empathy has become a cliché of contemporary politics, often espoused but rarely understood. Yet the capacity to understand other worldviews is neither easy nor comfortable. Seeing through others⠙ eyes requires strength, courage, integrity, and an ability to reason across the harshest political divides⠔and, in a time of heightened marginalization, disconnection, and polarization, empathy in our leaders and across society is vitally important.  Claire Yorke offers the first account of empathy in politics and leadership, drawing on examples from across the world. Including model leaders like Nelson Mandela and Jacinda Ardern, as well as figures on the right such as Donald Trump who mobilize different forms of empathy, Yorke asks what distinguishes empathetic leaders from the rest, and examines why empathy is essential for a more human-centred politics. Demonstrating empathy⠙s radical potential and disputing its connotations of weakness, this book shows how we can build a political ecosystem that fosters belonging and engagement⠔and cultivate the necessary dialogue to find common ground.

The European Union and Global Politics - Youngs Richard
This accessible new textbook situates the European Union in a dramatically changed world order. Resisting a more traditional and abstract introduction to the institutions, structures and policy making processes of the EU, this innovative new text cuts through the jargon to demonstrate how hard the EU must work to retain its international influence. Taking into account the latest empirical developments, including the spread of war and violence in the East with Ukraine and the ongoing turbulent politics of North Africa and the Middle East, Richard Youngs â “ an expert in the field â “ introduces us to how the EU has been forced to act differently. The book is unique in offering an outside-in conceptual framework that inverts the way that the EU external action is studied and understood. It unpacks the different international challenges the EU has faced in recent years, including the weakening of global order, the need for more protective security, geo-economic competition, climate change and conflicts to its east and south. In each case the book examines how the EU has responded and how its core international identity has changed as a result, assessing whether the Union still retains strong global influence. This book is the ideal companion for students taking modules on the European Unionâ ™s foreign policy, global politics, and for students of European Union Politics more broadly at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

Power, Image, and Memory - Peter J. Holliday
Those who write history determine its narrative, whether through written text or through the visual language of art and public monuments. Power, Image, and Memory examines a wide variety of artistic traditions, showing how art commemorating historical events can shape collective memory, and with it, the identities of social groups and nations. From the Mesopotamians to the present day, leaders and societies have used art to frame and memorialize important events. This account establishes a dialogue among traditions in a series of case studies, ranging from the reliefs at Ramses temple at Abu Simbel and the ancient Greek Alexander Mosaic to the Heian Period Japanese scroll of the Night Attack on the Sanjo Palace, the Benin Bronzes, Diego Velázquez s Surrender at Breda, and Picasso s Guernica. Weaving together meticulous historic detail, theory, and visual analysis, this volume offers a complex picture of the power of art and memory, as well as of the life of these monuments and messages over time, distanced from their original cultures and context. With insights relevant to contemporary debates reexamining historic monuments, Power, Image, and Memory sheds new light on the power of art to shape social memory and identity.

Landscape and Memory - Simon Schama
The forest primeval, the river of life, the sacred mount – read ‘Landscape and Memory’ to have these explained… ‘Landscape and Memory’ is a history book unlike any other. In a series of journeys through space and time, it examines our relationship with the landscape around us – rivers, mountains, forests – the impact each of them has had on our culture and imaginations, and the way in which we, in turn, have shaped them to answer our needs. This is not a conventional history book, but a book that builds up its argument by a series of poetic stories and impressions which cumulatively have the effect of a great novel. The forest primeval, the river of life, the sacred mount – at the end of this wonderful book we understand where these ideas have come from, why they are so compelling and how they still lie all around us.

Politics and Social Visions - Maurizio Ferrera
The starting point of this book is the civil war of ideas that broke out during the early 2010s about the purpose and even the desirability of the European Union as a polity, with a number of right-wing populist formations openly advocating for exiting the Union. The sovereign debt crisis triggered a spiral of ideological decommunalization: national leaders seemed to have lost that sense of togetherness and mutual bonds that had been laboriously developed over decades of integration. Politics and Social Visions explores this politically disruptive process from an ideational perspective, on the assumption that symbols and visions play a crucial role. In processes of polity formation, ideologies offer competing partisan views, but tend to converge along the communal dimension, which defines the nature and boundaries of the emerging polity. This convergence has been a challenge for the EU since its origins, as it has required the construction of a coherent and acceptable image of Europe as a compound polity of nation-states with a divisive past. Maurizio Ferrera offers a reconstruction of how the main ideological currents have struggled - and often failed - to reconfigure their horizontal profiles (i.e. their images of the national within Europe) into a new vertical profile (i.e. an image of the European within the national). The challenge has been especially demanding for European left-wing parties, which have been largely unable to forge a shared and recognizable social vision of the European Union. Only during the COVID pandemic have the seeds of a novel communal consensus emerged that might prove capable of defeating the anti-communal views of Eurosceptic ideologies and free market technocrats.

Orna Ben-Ami, Displacement and Memory
An entirely new retrospective survey of the work of Israeli artist Orna Ben-Ami, including Ben-AmiÂ’s monumental public works in cut and welded iron, from the early 1990s to the present day.Ben-Ami first started to learn gold and silversmithing, at the Jerusalem Technological Centre, before studying sculpture at the Corcoran School of Art in Washington, DC, between 1990 and 1992. From 1994 she became fully engaged in sculpture using iron as her principal raw material for her artistic expression. Throughout her work in iron, Ben-Ami expressed her feelings using welding, a primarily masculine art process, imbued with her own feminine instincts. She began expressing her personal memories, and later, she continued by expressing the preservation of memory, particularly the memories of transient and displaced peoples, be they refugees or migrants uprooting their lives in the search for a better and safer life in new lands.Ben-Ami has presented her works in 45 solo exhibitions around the world, including 23 exhibitions in museums across the United States. In 2017, her exhibition Entire Life in a Package , was hosted at the United Nations in Geneva and New York to draw attention to the global refugee crisis, focusing on refugees. In April 2024, she again presented the exhibition Negative Positive at the United Nations in New York, which told about the tragedy of the terrorist attack on Israel on October 7, 2023. In these two exhibitions, she exhibited three-dimensional iron sculptures and combinations of sculptures attached to original news photographs of refugees and destroyed houses. This retrospective volume presents more than 100 key artworks covering the major themes Ben-Ami has drawn upon since the early 1990s, including Jewish refugees from Europe post-WWII, IsraeliÂ’s displaced in northern Israel and around the Gaza Strip post October 7, 2023, and Palestinian refugees both within and outside the Gaza Strip.

What is Politics? - Colin Hay
The definitive guide to politics in our polarized times Politics is everywhere. It touches almost every aspect of our lives. And it is present wherever individuals face collective choices. It is hardly surprising, then, that politics so often divides us, above all in an age in which the collective choices we face seem more daunting and more consequential than they have perhaps ever been. Exploring what it means to think politically in these troubled times, this cutting-edge textbook reveals the many dimensions of politics. It does so by opening a series of analytic lenses through which we can make sense of politics and its impact upon societies and individuals. Each chapter, written by a leading scholar in the field, encourages us to view politics in a particular way, making a succinct and focused case for the insight this brings to our understanding of political practice, political behaviour, and political outcomes. Among the perspectives considered are politics as power, politics as moral choice, politics as identification, politics as ritual, politics as rhetoric, and politics as crisis management. Written with the new student in mind, this probing introduction will be essential reading for all those who strive to make sense of politics in today s world.

Marx, Capital and the Madness of Economic Reason - Harvey David
Marx s Capital is one of the most important texts of the modern era. The three volumes, published between 1867 and 1883, changed the destiny of countries, politics and people across the world - and continue to resonate today. In this book, David Harvey lays out their key arguments. In clear and concise language, Harvey describes the architecture of capital according to Marx, placing his observations in the context of capitalism in the second half of the nineteenth century. He considers the degree to which technological, economic and industrial change during the last 150 years means Marx s analysis and its application may need to be modified. Marx s trilogy concerns the circulation of capital: volume I, how labour increases the value of capital, which he called valorisation; volume II, on the realisation of this value, by selling it and turning it into money or credit; volume III, on what happens to the value next in processes of distribution. The three volumes contain the core of Marx s thinking on the workings and history of capital and capitalism. David Harvey explains and illustrates the profound insights and enormous analytical power they continue to offer in terms that, without compromising their depth and complexity, will appeal to a wide range of readers, including those coming to the work for the first time.

The Assault on Reason - Al Gore
Now with a New Preface and Conclusion: Post-Truth: On Donald Trump and the 2016 Election The United States of America is in the midst of a deepening crisis for their democracy. After the strangest election cycle in modern American history it is important that the grave threats to the American way of life that were glaringly revealed in this campaign are addressed. In The Assault on Reason, Nobel Peace Prize winner and former Vice President Al Gore examines how faith in the power of reason â “ the idea that citizens can govern themselves through rational debate â “ is in peril. Democracy depends on a well-informed citizenry and a two-way conversation about ideas, but the public sphere has been degraded by fake news and the politics of fear, partisanship and blind faith. Now updated to investigate the rise of Trump and post-truth politics, The Assault on Reason is a farsighted and powerful manifesto for clear thinking, crucial if the vitality of democracy is to be rebuilt and good decisions made once more.

Nasty Politics - Thomas Zeitzoff
A novel explanation for why politicians insult, accuse, and threaten their opponents, even though voters say they don t like it.Why do politicians engage in nasty politics? Why do they use insult, accusations, intimidation, and in rare cases violence against their domestic political opponents? In Nasty Politics, Thomas Zeitzoff answers these questions by examining this global political trend in the US, Ukraine, and Israel and looking at how key leaders such as Trump, Zelensky, and Netanyahu use it. Drawing on surveys, case studies, in-depth interviews, databases of nasty politics, and large social media datasets, Zeitzoff shows that across all three countries, the public generally doesn t like nasty politics and it increases the threat of political violence. But it can also be a way to signal toughness to voters, which is especially important in threatening times. Featuring a powerful theory of why nastiness takes hold in democratic polities, Nasty Politics highlights how it influences the kinds of politicians who run for office and deepens our understanding for why so many politicians now rely on outsized anger and withering insults for political gain.

McCawley and Trethowan - The Chaos of Politics and the Integrity of Law - Volume 1 - Ian Loveland
In this two-volume work, Ian Loveland offers a detailed exploration and analysis of 2 Australian entrenchment cases which have long been a source of fascination and inspiration to lawyers. This first volume, focusing on the McCawley case, introduces non-Australian readers to the remarkably rich legal and political history of constitutional formation and development in New South Wales and Queensland in the 19th and early 20th centuries. It culminates with a deeply contextualised analysis of the emergence of the bizarre â ˜Two Act entrenchmentâ ™ principle which emerged in Queenslandâ ™s constitutional law in 1908 and the subsequent and celebrated McCawley judgments of the Australian High Court and Privy Council. The judgments are placed in both their deep and immediate historical and political contexts; from the legal formation of New South Wales in the late 1700s, through the creation of New South Wales and Queensland as distinct colonies in the 1850s and the subsequent passage of the Colonial Laws Validity Act 1865, on to the fiercely contested reformism espoused by Labour governments in Queensland in the early part of the twentieth century.

McCawley and Trethowan - The Chaos of Politics and the Integrity of Law - Volume 2 - Ian Loveland
In the second part of this two-volume study, Ian Loveland delves deeply into the immediate historical and political context of the Trethowan litigation which began in New South Wales in 1930 and reached the Privy Council two years later. The litigation centred on the efforts of a conservatively-inclined government to prevent a future Labour administration led by the then radical politician Jack Lang abolishing the upper house of the Stateâ ™s legislature by entrenching the existence of the upper house through the legal device of requiring that its abolition be approved by a state-wide referendum. The book carefully examines the immediate political and legal routes of the entrenchment device fashioned by the Stateâ ™s Premier Sir Thomas Bavin and his former law student, colleague and then Dean of the Sydney University law school Sir John Peden, and places the doctrinal arguments advanced in subsequent litigation in the State courts, before the High Court and finally in the Privy Council in the multiple contexts of the personal and policy based disputes which pervaded both the State and national political arenas. In its final chapter, the book draws on insights provided by the detailed study of McCawley (in volume one) and Trethowan to revisit and re-evaluate the respective positions adopted by William Wade and Ivor Jennings as to the capacity of the United Kingdomâ ™s Parliament to introduce entrenching legislation which would be upheld by the courts.

24/7 Politics - Kathryn Cramer Brownell
How cable television upended American political life in the pursuit of profits and influenceAs television began to overtake the political landscape in the 1960s, network broadcast companies, bolstered by powerful lobbying interests, dominated screens across the nation. Yet over the next three decades, the expansion of a different technology, cable, changed all of this. 24/7 Politics tells the story of how the cable industry worked with political leaders to create an entirely new approach to television, one that tethered politics to profits and divided and distracted Americans by feeding their appetite for entertainmentâ ”frequently at the expense of fostering responsible citizenship. In this timely and provocative book, Kathryn Cramer Brownell argues that cable television itself is not to blame for todayâ ™s rampant polarization and scandal politicsâ ”the intentional restructuring of television as a political institution is. She describes how cable innovationsâ ”from C-SPAN coverage of congressional debates in the 1980s to MTVâ ™s foray into presidential politics in the 1990sâ ”took on network broadcasting using market forces, giving rise to a more decentralized media world. Brownell shows how cable became an unstoppable medium for political communication that prioritized cult followings and loyalty to individual brands, fundamentally reshaped party politics, and, in the process, sowed the seeds of democratic upheaval. 24/7 Politics reveals how cable TV created new possibilities for antiestablishment voices and opened a pathway to political prominence for seemingly unlikely figures like Donald Trump by playing to narrow audiences and cultivating division instead of common ground.

In addition, the author examines the cultural factors at play, such as disillusionment with democracy and social fragmentation. Against Reason, Volume 1 - James Voorhies
Original essays and visual art that reveal the depth and complexity of the sculpture of American modernist Tony Smith, placing his multifaceted practice in dialogue with contemporary voices.Against Reason, Volume 1 is published alongside the Tony Smith Catalogue Raisonné: Sculpture, itself the first of two volumes—the other focusing on architecture—documenting the artist’s career. This book reveals the depth and complexity of Smith’s oeuvre in sculpture while positioning its transdisciplinary nature in dialogue with contemporary practitioners. Commissioned essays by art historians and curators and visual projects by artists offer renewed perspectives on a variety of cultural systems, exploring the ongoing vitality of Smith’s work. Their contributions reflect upon the modernist era in which Smith’s work was produced to think through ingrained ideologies, revealing other, parallel modernisms and histories.Against Reason delves deeply into work by Smith that has not been previously parsed or discussed within art historical contexts. The book shuttles among visual art projects and texts, from Mario Gooden’s essay exploring Smith’s refusal to occupy the known quantities assigned to “artist” and “architect,” to Saim Demircan’s study of the re-presentation of Smith’s work through its photo-documentation in the mainstream press, to Judith Barry’s transformation of Smith’s sculpture into the form of a flipbook and centerpiece “pop-up.” Jenni Sorkin explores the influence of Smith’s sculpture practice on his daughter Kiki Smith, while Yann Chateigné Tytelman casts a wider net to examine correspondences between Smith and the contemporary artists Joachim Koester, Mai-Thu Perret, and Cauleen Smith. Tom Burr closes the volume with a photo-collage project reflective of his ongoing engagement with Tony Smith‘s oeuvre.

Transgender Body Politics - Heather Brunskell-Evans
Transgenderism in the twenty-first century is patriarchy emblazoned in imperial form.At a time when supposedly enlightened attitudes are championed by the mainstream, philosopher and activist Heather Brunskell-Evans shows how, in plain view under the guise of liberalism, a regressive menâ ™s rights movement is posing a massive threat to the human rights of women and children everywhere. This movement is transgender politics which, while spouting platitudes about equality, is in reality colonising and erasing the bodies, agency and autonomy of women and children, while asserting menâ ™s rights to bodily intrusion into every social and personal space. The transgender agenda redefines diversity and inclusion utilising the language of victimhood. In a complete reversal of feminist gender critical analyses, sex and gender are redefined: identity is now called â ˜innateâ ™ (a â ˜feelingâ ™ located somewhere in the body) and biological sex is said to be socially constructed (and hence changeable). This ensures a lifetime of drug dependency for transitioners, thereby delivering vast profits for Big Pharma in a capitalist dream.Everyone, including every trans person, has the right to live freely without discrimination. But the transgender movement has been hijacked by misogynists who are appropriating and inverting the struggles of feminism to deliver an agenda devoid of feminist principles. In a chilling twist, when feminists critique the patriarchal status quo it is now they who are alleged to be extremists for not allowing menâ ™s interests to control the political narrative. Institutions whose purpose is to defend human rights now interpret truth speech as hate speech, and endorse the no-platforming of women as ethical. This brave, truthful and eye-opening book does not shirk from the challenge of meeting the politics of liberalism and transgender rights head on. Everyone who cares about the future of womenâ ™s and childrenâ ™s rights must read it. The micro-politics and the macro-politics of identity interact to form one of the most misogynistic expressions of patriarchy in recent times under the guise of equality, diversity and inclusion.

To answer that question, award-winning journalist Rafael Behr takes the reader on a personal journey from despair at the state of politics to hope that there is a better way of doing things, with insights drawn from three decades as a political commentator and foreign correspondent.

Why arenâ ™t ordinary Russians more outraged by Putinâ ™s invasion of Ukraine? Inside the Kremlinâ ™s own historical propaganda narratives, Russiaâ ™s invasion of Ukraine makes complete sense. From its World War II cult to anti-Western conspiracy theories, the Kremlin has long used myth and memory to legitimize repression at home and imperialism abroad, its patriotic history resonating with and persuading large swathes of the Russian population. In Memory Makers, Russia analyst Jade McGlynn takes us into the depths of Russian historical propaganda, revealing the chilling web of nationwide narratives and practices perforating everyday life, from after-school patriotic history clubs to tower block World War II murals. The use of history to manifest a particular Russian identity has had grotesque, even gruesome, consequences, but it belongs to a global political pattern â “ where oneâ ™s view of history is the ultimate marker of political loyalty, patriotism and national belonging. Memory Makers demonstrates how the extreme Russian experience is a stark warning to other nations tempted to stare too long at the reflection of their own imagined and heroic past.
