Plague between Prague and Vienna - Karel Černý, Sonia Horn
Vienna s prominent landmark, the Pestsäule (PlagueColumn), commemorates the devastating bubonic plagueepidemic of 1679 that killed thousands of the city s in-habitants. The gigantic, three sided marble pyramidiscovered with baroque clouds is dedicated to the Trinityand the Nine Choirs of Angels. Although pledgedby Emperor Leopold I in the very year of the outbreak ofthe disease, the memorial could not be completed until1694. Its imagery reflects some of the most tragic eventsbut also some of Austria s greatest triumphs, because theinvasion, siege, and repulsion of the Ottoman army in1683 added new meaning to the monument s concept.Vienna s Pestsäule is now recognized as one of the mostinnovative and ambitious sculptural ensembles createdanywhere in Europe in the Post-Bernini era.

Last Days in Old Europe : Trieste ´79, Vienna ´85, Prague ´89 - Richard Bassett
The final decade of the Cold War, through the eyes of a laconic and elegant observer In 1979 Richard Bassett set out on a series of adventures and encounters in central Europe which allowed him to savour the last embers of the cosmopolitan old Hapsburg lands and gave him a ringside seat at the fall of another ancien regime, that of communist rule. From Trieste to Prague and Vienna to Warsaw, fading aristocrats, charming gangsters, fractious diplomats and glamorous informants provided him with an unexpected counterpoint to the austerities of life along the Iron Curtain, first as a professional musician and then as a foreign correspondent. The book shows us familiar events and places from unusual vantage points: dilapidated mansions and boarding-houses, train carriages and cafes, where the game of espionage between east and west is often set. There are unexpected encounters with Shirley Temple, Fitzroy Maclean, Lech Walesa and the last Empress of Austria. Bassett finds himself at the funeral of King Nicola of Montenegro in Cetinje, plays bridge with the last man alive to have been decorated by the Austrian Emperor Franz-Josef and watches the KGB representative in Prague bestowing the last rites on the Soviet empire in Europe. Music and painting, architecture and landscape, food and wine, friendship and history run through the book. The author is lucky, observant and leans romantically towards the values of an older age. He brilliantly conjures the time, the people he meets, and Mitteleuropa in one of the pivotal decades of its history.

Prague and Central Bohemia - Martin Ouředníček
The theme of socio-spatial differentiation has belonged to the core issues of social geography and urban studies for a long time. The general aim of the book is to describe and explain the current socio-spatial differentiation of Prague and the Central Bohemian Region and the processes that have influenced it during the first two decades of the twenty-first century. The book offers its own theoretical perspective on the structuration of spatial patterns and the social environment, a general view of regional development, and the main socio-spatial processes of the period after transition. Maps are an important part of this volume and concentrate crucial information within most chapters. Apart from the static information described in the maps, the book offers a look at current population processes”, as hinted at by the subtitle of the publication. The presentation and evaluation of processes” require more dynamic forms of cartographic visualisation and new methods of investigation. Among them, new tools of segregation measurement, various approaches for the use of mobile phone data, and an innovative form of population forecast are presented in the book. The common thread connecting all chapters is a regional focus on Prague and the Central Bohemian Region and a quantitative approach to comparing spatial patterns and regional processes.

The World the Plague Made - James Belich
A groundbreaking history of how the Black Death unleashed revolutionary change across the medieval world and ushered in the modern ageIn 1346, a catastrophic plague beset Europe and its neighbours. The Black Death was a human tragedy that abruptly halved entire populations and caused untold suffering, but it also brought about a cultural and economic renewal on a scale never before witnessed. The World the Plague Made is a panoramic history of how the bubonic plague revolutionized labour, trade, and technology and set the stage for Europeâ ™s global expansion. James Belich takes readers across centuries and continents to shed new light on one of historyâ ™s greatest paradoxes. Why did Europeâ ™s dramatic rise begin in the wake of the Black Death? Belich shows how plague doubled the per capita endowment of everything even as it decimated the population. Many more people had disposable incomes. Demand grew for silks, sugar, spices, furs, gold, and slaves. Europe expanded to satisfy that demandâ ”and plague provided the means. Labour scarcity drove more use of waterpower, wind power, and gunpowder. Technologies like water-powered blast furnaces, heavily gunned galleons, and musketry were fast-tracked by plague. A new â œcrew cultureâ of â œdisposable malesâ emerged to man the guns and galleons. Setting the rise of Western Europe in global context, Belich demonstrates how the mighty empires of the Middle East and Russia also flourished after the plague, and how European expansion was deeply entangled with the Chinese and other peoples throughout the world.

Prague - Zdeněk Thoma, Michal Thoma, Soňa Thomová
The spirit of Prague is difficult to describe, although many have tried. For artists at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries the city was a black temptress hidden in the négligé of the white mists of the Vltava, a tempting and treacherous woman, a capricious harlot - a dark Salome who dances with the heads of her paramours. In 1902 the French sculptor Auguste Rodin said that Prague is one of the most sublime cities. Approximately thirty years later another Frenchman, the poet André Breton, proclaimed that Prague was the magic capital of old Europe. And in his celebrated book Magic Prague, written in the latter half of the 20th century, the Italian academic Angelo Maria Ripellino wrote when I seek another word for mystery, the only word I can find is Prague. And he described the city as a breeding ground for phantoms, an arena of sorcery … It is a trap which - once it takes hold with its mists, its black arts, its poisoned honey - does not let go, does not forgive.

The Plague - Albert Camus
The Plague is Albert Camus s world-renowned fable of fear and courageThe townspeople of Oran are in the grip of a deadly plague, which condemns its victims to a swift and horrifying death. Fear, isolation and claustrophobia follow as they are forced into quarantine. Each person responds in their own way to the lethal disease: some resign themselves to fate, some seek blame, and a few, like Dr Rieux, resist the terror. An immediate triumph when it was published in 1947, The Plague is in part an allegory of France s suffering under the Nazi occupation, and a story of bravery and determination against the precariousness of human existence. A matchless fable of fear, courage and cowardice Independent Magnificent The TimesAlbert Camus was born in Algeria in 1913. He studied philosophy in Algiers and then worked in Paris as a journalist. He was one of the intellectual leaders of the Resistance movement and, after the War, established his international reputation as a writer. His books include The Plague, The Just and The Fall, and he won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1957. Camus was killed in a road accident in 1960.

The Wars Between Greeks and Carthaginians - Sotirios Drokalos
Before the rise of Rome, the Greeks and Carthaginians were, for centuries, the two most powerful nations of the Western Mediterranean. From the Pillars of Hercules to Sicily and Cyrenaica, the Greeks and the Carthaginians founded cities, created trade routes, interacted with each other as competitors and collaborators, and often went to war. However, the long conflict between the Western Greeks and the Carthaginians has been neglected by modern historians, even though the wars between them are definitely among the greatest, longest, and most dramatic clashes of great powers in history when it comes to the historical breadth and the forces involved. Sotirios Drokalos gives these epic events the attention they deserve. The competition and conflicts between Greeks and Phoenicians in the West began by the time of the first colonizations during the eighth century BCE and the development of the cultural and economic activity of the two cultures. They intensified after the Greek colonies consolidation and Carthage s rise as the most significant Phoenician city and a commercial empire during the sixth century BCE. Especially from the beginning of the fifth century BCE and for the next roughly 200 years, the Western Mediterranean was the field of a ruthless bipolar confrontation between the Greeks of the West and the Carthaginians, marked by the actions of remarkable personalities of the ancient world. This historical clash, apart from the vast and bloody battles, the invasions of one side by the other, the sieges and the mass slaughters, also included elements of cultural interaction and exchange, consisting essentially of a practical test of constitutions, social systems, and political views. Under this prism, studying that tumultuous era could be necessary today to better understand Mediterranean and European historical evolution.

Prague Revisited - Muehlen Bernis
This book of over 200 photographs by Bernis and Peter von zur Muehlen covers the sweep of Prague’s history from World War II to the “Velvet Revolution.” The first chapter, illustrated by his mother’s black and white snapshots of the city, is an account of Peter’s life in Prague as a young boy during the months leading up to the end of World War II and of his family’s narrow escape days before the Red Army entered the city. The following chapters describe four visits by Bernis and Peter between 1985 and 1992, an epoch that saw Czechoslovakia’s transformation from Communist dictatorship to the restoration of democracy. The images reveal not only a glorious city, but also the many less prominent sites that give Prague its unique charm.Haunting images of the Old Jewish Cemetery remind the reader of the turbulent history of the Jews, nearly exterminated by the Nazis. One chapter traces the evolution of the Lennon Wall, a famous symbol of Prague’s long struggle for freedom. Lively accounts of the photographers’ travel experiences document a city slowly coming to terms with its own history. An afterword by Ori Z. Soltes, noted lecturer and author of twenty books, illuminates the city’s Judaeo-Christian history.

Father, Son and Spirit - Andreas J Kostenberger
From the patristic period until today, John s Gospel has served as a major source for the church s knowledge, doctrine, and worship of the triune God. Among all New Testament documents the Fourth Gospel provides not only the most raw material for the doctrine of the Trinity, but also the most highly developed patterns of reflection on this material particularly patterns that seek to account in some way for the distinct personhood and divinity of Father, Son and Spirit without compromising the unity of God. While there have been recent, fine studies on aspects of John s doctrine of God, it is surprising that none summarizes and synthesizes what John has to say about God as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. In order to fill this gap, Kostenberger and Swain offer a fresh examination of John s trinitarian vision.

Since its original release in 1984, This Is Spinal Tap has evolved from a beloved cult film into a cinematic landmark: an all-time comedy classic that pioneered an entire genre: the mockumentary. A Fine Line Between Stupid and Clever also comes with a bonus memoir by Reiner’s directorial alter ego, Marty DiBergi, in which he interviews Tap band members Nigel Tufnel, David St. Hubbins and Derek Smalls about their musical journey and their drummers who paid the ultimate sacrifice to the rock gods.

A lost pilgrimage route. A journey in search of our walking heritage. On an antique map in Oxford s Bodleian Library, a faint red line threading through towns and villages between Southampton and Canterbury suggests a significant, though long-forgotten, road. Renamed the Old Way, medieval pilgrims are thought to have travelled this route to reach the celebrated shrine of Thomas Becket.Over four seasons, travel writer Gail Simmons walks the Old Way, winding 240 miles between the chalk hills and shifting seascapes of the south coast, to rediscover what a long journey on foot offers us today. What it means to embrace slow travel in the age of the car? Why does being a woman walking alone still feel like a radical act? Can we now reclaim pilgrimage as a secular act?Blending history, anthropology, etymology and geology, Gail s walk reveals the rich natural and cultural heritage found on our own doorstep.

Huh: Curriculum conversations between subject and senior leaders - John Tomsett, Mary Myatt
Schools need to have purchase on the curriculum: why they teach the subjects beyond preparation for examinations, what they are intending to achieve with the curriculum, how well it is planned and enacted in classrooms and how they know whether itâ ™s doing what itâ ™s supposed to. Fundamental to this understanding are the conversations between subject leaders and their line managers. However, there is sometimes a mismatch between the subject specialisms of senior leaders and those they line manage. If I donâ ™t know the terrain and the importance of a particular subject, how can I talk intelligently with colleagues who are specialists? This book sets out to offer some tentative answers to these questions. Each of the national curriculum subjects is discussed with a subject leader and provides an insight into what they view as the importance of the subject, how they go about ensuring that knowledge, understanding and skills are developed over time, how they talk about the quality of the schemes in their departments and what they would welcome from senior leaders by way of support. We have chosen this way of opening up the potentially difficult terrain of expertise on one side and relative lack of expertise on the other, by providing these case studies. They are suggested as prompts rather than the last word. Informed debate is, after all, the fuel of curriculum development. And why Huh? Well, Huh? may be John s first response when he walks into a Year 8 German class but, in fact, we chose Huh as the title of our book as he is the Egyptian god of endlessness. As Claire Hill so eloquently comments in her chapter, â œCurriculum development is an ongoing process; itâ ™s not going to be finished, ever.â And we believe that Huh captures a healthy and expansive way of considering curriculum conversations.

Between Silk and Cyanide - Leo Marks
In 1942, with a black-market chicken under his arm, Leo Marks left his father s famous bookshop, 84 Charing Cross Road, and went to war. He was twenty-two and a cryptopgraher of genius. In Between Silk and Cyanide, his critically acclaimed account of his time in SOE, Marks tells how he revolutionised the code-making techniques of the Allies, trained some of the most famous agents dropped into France including Violette Szabo and the White Rabbit , and why he wrote haunting verse including his The Life that I have poem. He reveals for the first time the disastrous dimensions of the code war between SOE and the Germans in Holland; how the Germans were fooled into thinking a Secret Army was operating in the Fatherland itself, and how and why he broke General de Gaulle s secret code. Both thrilling and poignant, Marks s book is truly one of the last great Second World War memoirs.

Hypnosis Between Science and Magic - Isabelle Stengersová
What if judgment returned to the craft of magic? How would that relieve the burdens of critique and realign its priorities? These questions regarding the value of magic to thinking are at the very heart of the acclaimed philosopher of science Isabelle Stengers political and philosophical thought and her insistence that the smoke of the burned witches still hangs in our nostrils .Now, in the first English translation of this classic text, Hypnosis Between Science and Magic provides an entry point to the work of Isabelle Stengers, who has so originally and forcefully shifted how we think about the history of ideas. The book focuses in on an area of her thought that has recurred throughout her career: the presumed antagonism between magic and science, and especially the evacuation of magic from all that is thought to be scientifically valid.

Velká blízkovýchodní nestabilita - Karel Černý
Současná nestabilita arabského světa se projevuje různě: revolucemi, politickým islámem, terorismem, migrací a hroucením celých států. Kniha vysvětluje kořeny nestability s pomocí teoreticky původní a empiricky podložené historicko-sociologické srovnávací analýzy. Používá sofistikovanou analýzu a bohatá empirická data, aby odhalila socioekonomické a politické nerovnovážnosti, jež stojí v pozadí arabských povstání a konfliktů, které odstartovaly. Raymond Hinnebusch, žijící klasik blízkovýchodních studií, University of St. Andrews, Scotland. Karel Černý napsal teoreticky originální a empiricky podloženou analýzu strukturálních příčin sociální a politické nestability, kterou dnes pozorujeme na Blízkém východě. Uzi Rabi, ředitel Moshe Dayan Center for the Middle Eastern and African Studies. Clinton Bailey, izraelský antropolog, autor knih Bedouin Law from Sinai a the Negev: Justice without Government. Karel Černý zkoumá a navštěvuje Blízký východ déle než jedno desetiletí. Vlády a občané jsou konfrontováni a snaží s vyhnout výzvám spojeným s chronicky nerovnoměrným rozvojem: velmi rychlou demografickou a sociální změnou, pomalejším ekonomickým rozvojem a velice pomalou změnou politickou. Dennis Smith, britský sociolog z Loughborough University, autor knihy The Rise of Historical Sociology. Většina z nich zapadla, protože nedokázala postihnout komplexitu sociálního, ekonomického a kulturního života v regionu. Kniha Karla Černého zabývající se hlubšími strukturálními příči

The Secret War Between Hitler and Stalin - Norman Ridley
The intelligence war between Germany and the Soviet Union, ignited by Operation Barbarossa on 22 June 1941, was fiercely contested over four years. Neither side was prepared for the scale of the conflict, and both quickly developed methods to assess and counter each otherâ ™s military intentions. This book explores the intelligence strategies of Stalinâ ™s SMERSH and Hitlerâ ™s Abwehr. SMERSH coordinated three independent counter-intelligence agencies within the Red Army, while the Abwehr was Germanyâ ™s military-intelligence service. Focusing on key battles like Stalingrad and Kursk, the book examines how both sides competed for intelligence advantage. The Soviets excelled in strategic deception, manipulating German decision-making. Early in the war, they used counterintelligence to deceive the Germans, notably during their surprise counteroffensive at Moscow in December 1941 and their hidden tank formations in 1942. German intelligence chief Gehlen underestimated Soviet deception and overestimated German superiority, which hindered effective analysis. Meanwhile, the Soviets deployed agents behind German lines and employed terror tactics to destroy German operations. The pivotal battle of Stalingrad revealed the Germans intelligence failures, and their subsequent losses marked a turning point. By the war s end, Soviet counterintelligence had become a critical weapon, reshaping the intelligence landscape and significantly impacting the outcome of the war.

Between Jaffa and Tel Aviv, 1870â
The literary memoir of a founder of Tel Aviv, now available for the first time in an annotated English translation. Â Born in Jaffa in 1870, Yosef Eliyahu Chelouche grew up within a notable Sephardi family in the local Jewish community. He went on to become a prominent entrepreneur; a founder of Tel Aviv; and a fierce critic of the Ashkenazi Zionist leadership, Arab nationalism, and British colonial sectarianism; before emerging, in the last decade of his life, as an anguished public figure struggling to repair Arab-Jewish relations. Â His memoir paints an intimate portrait of life in Palestine at the turn of the twentieth century, told from the perspective of a Middle Eastern Jew deeply embedded in local society. By centering on the world and experiences of a native Jew who was an eyewitness to and participant in the unfolding conflict in Palestine, this book shows how the course of Zionist politics and Jewish-Arab relations in pre-state Palestine might have taken alternative pathways. A comprehensive introduction sets the scene in late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century Jaffa and thoughtful annotations contextualize Cheloucheâ ™s story within the modern history of Palestine and Israel. Between Jaffa and Tel Aviv, 1870â “1930 tells the fascinating story of a civic leaderâ ”and offers a complex view of the various cultural, social, and political forces that forged multilayered Jewish identities in the Middle East. The book includes a family tree and is illustrated with photographs of the family and scenes of Jaffa and early Tel Aviv.

Artificial Legal Entities: Essays on Legal Agency and Liability - Karel Beran
The monograph seeks to answer the questions of how juristic persons—as artificial legal entities with no distinct intellect or will of their own—can perform legal acts (i.e. engage in legal conduct) and in what way they can become legally liable (not only for their conduct). To develop these issues, the monograph explores the concept of a juristic person and this person’s legal acts from a general jurisprudential point of view, then from the perspective of fundamental rights, and finally from the viewpoint of contemporary law, with a particular emphasis on Czech law. The book addresses juristic persons’ legal acts not only in relation to substantive law, but also in respect of procedural rules that enable these persons to perform acts in civil proceedings. Several sections of the monograph deal with issues of liability and responsibility of juristic persons while analysing their “no-fault” and “fault-based” liability. The monograph also introduces a novel approach to vicarious liability of juristic persons. Finally, it explores juristic persons’ liability for administrative offences.

Karel Teige. Captain of the Avant-Garde - Rea Michalová
Karel Teige ovlivnil českou kulturu v mnoha oblastech a jednoznačně patří k mimořádným osobnostem českého moderního umění. Art theorist and critic, graphic designer, author, and translator Karel Teige is today recognized not just as the creator of internationally acclaimed Surrealist collages, but also as a leading figure of the European avant-garde. Teige spent his entire life commenting on and interpreting developments in the visual arts. His multifaceted theoretical writings helped shape the conceptual foundations of modern art, and his activities and intensive contacts with other members of the European avant-garde helped secure Czech art s place on the international art scene. His work anticipated, initiated, and helped to develop the progressive artistic movements that fundamentally influenced art in the 20th century. The comprehensive monograph Karel Teige - Captain of the Avant-Garde, written by the young art historian Rey Michalová, takes a wide-ranging look at the evolution of Teige s ideological, theoretical, cultural, and political views, and recalls important moments in his life and their significance within the international context. The book includes a rich set of illustrations, photographs from his life, and examples of his unique collages and graphic design.
