Komedie a spory okolo nich jasně naznačují, že Moliére dělal z her živý obraz soudobého života a nešvarů společnosti. Nevěřil, že by se lidé dali změnit k lepšímu, ukazoval, jak je lidská povaha pokřivena různými druhy úchylného chování. Jeho postavy zůstávají na konci hry stejné jako na začátku.
