Wagons in the Peak District - Paul Harrison

The high-quality rock strata of the Peak District area of England is a major source of limestone products that have long been transported away in railway wagons. Over the years, many different designs of hoppers, open boxes, covered hoppers and powder tank wagons have been used around the Buxton area. The construction boom of the last decade has seen an increase in railfreight traffic in the area. This book illustrates the different types of wagons that have been used on freight flows from the Peak District both past and present. Featured here are private owner, leased, and railway-owned wagons that serve the four main rail-served quarries. Some wagons still operate on the same traffic flows, while others have seen converted or new wagons introduced over the past twenty years. With a terrific selection of photographs each accompanied by an informative caption, Paul Harrison explores the variety of wagons that can be found on the railways of the Peak District.

The Beaker People

The Beaker People: isotopes, mobility and diet in prehistoric Britain presents the results of a major project that sought to address a century-old question about the people who were buried with Beakers a – the distinctive pottery of Continental origin that was current, predominantly in equally distinctive burials, in Britain from around 2450 BC. Who were these people? Were they immigrants and how far did they move around? What did they eat? What was their lifestyle? How do they compare with Britain’s earlier inhabitants and with contemporaries who did not use Beaker pottery? An international team of leading archaeologists and scientists, led by Professor Mike Parker Pearson, was assembled to address these questions. Around 300 skeletons were subjected to isotope analysis to explore patterns of mobility and diet, and 150 new radiocarbon dates were obtained. Dental microwear was examined for 64 individuals to provide further information about the food they had eaten, and new information on the sex and age of 201 people obtained. A comparative study was undertaken of the shape and size of Beaker users’ skulls and those of Neolithic people in the Peak District of England, to examine the long-held claim that there was a switch from ... The Peak District - Tony Waltham

This book is one of a popular and exciting series that seeks to tell the story of some of Britain's most beautiful landscapes. Written with the general reader - the walker, the lover of the countryside - firmly in mind, these pages open the door to a fascinating story of ancient oceans, deltas, mineralization and tundra landscapes. Over millions of years the rocks that now form the spectacular terrains of the White Peak and the Dark Peak were laid down on the floors of tropical seas and deformed by plate tectonics before being shaped by streams and rivers. The white limestone was fretted into its own distinctive landscape above hidden cave systems; then generations of miners and farmers modified and contributed to the landscapes we see today. With the help of photographs that are largely his own, geologist Tony Waltham tells the remarkable story of the Peak District, explaining just how the landscapes of limestone plateau, grit moors and river valleys came to look as they do. Including suggestions for walks and places to visit in order to appreciate the best of the National Park's landforms, this accessible and readable book opens up an amazing new perspective for anyone who ... Walking in the Dark - Douglas Field

A moving exploration of the life and work of the celebrated American writer, blending biography and memoir with literary criticism. Since James Baldwin’s death in 1987, his writing – including The Fire Next Time, one of the manifestos of the Civil Rights Movement, and Giovanni’s Room, a pioneering work of gay fiction – has only grown in relevance. Douglas Field was introduced to Baldwin’s essays and novels by his father, who witnessed the writer’s debate with William F. Buckley at Cambridge University in 1965. In Walking in the dark, he embarks on a journey to unravel his life-long fascination and to understand why Baldwin continues to enthral us decades after his death.Tracing Baldwin’s footsteps in France, the US and Switzerland, and digging into archives, Field paints an intimate portrait of the writer’s life and influence. At the same time, he offers a poignant account of coming to terms with his father’s Alzheimer’s disease. Interweaving Baldwin’s writings on family, illness, memory and place, Walking in the dark is an eloquent testament to the enduring power of great literature to illuminate our paths.

Walking in the Dust of Rabbi Jesus - Lois Tverberg

In Walking in the Dust of Rabbi Jesus, Lois Tverberg challenges readers to follow their Rabbi more closely by reexamining his words in the light of their Jewish context. Doing so will provide a richer, deeper understanding of his ministry, compelling us to live differently, to become more Christ-like. We''ll begin to understand why his first Jewish disciples abandoned everything to follow him, to live out his commands. Our modern society, with its individualism and materialism, is very different than the tight-knit, family-oriented setting Jesus lived and taught in. What wisdom can we glean from his Eastern, biblical attitude toward life? How can knowing Jesus within this context shed light on his teachings for us today? In Walking in the Dust of Rabbi Jesus we''ll journey back in time to eavesdrop on the conversations that arose among the rabbis of Jesus'' day, and consider how hearing Rabbi Jesus with the ears of a first-century disciple can bring new meaning to our faith. And we''ll listen to Jewish thinkers through the ages, discovering how ideas that germinated in Jesus'' time have borne fruit. Doing so will yield fresh, practical insights for following our Rabbi''s teachings from a Jewish point of view.

Europe in the Eleventh Century - Charles G. West

Eleventh-century Europe was diverse and fast-changing. Historians have often debated this change through two sets of competing arguments, one about the shifting role of the Church and the Papacy, and the other about the rise of castellan lords and a proliferation in violence. Yet these arguments about ''Church Reform'' and ''Feudal Revolution'' only really apply to one part of Europe, the Latin West. This book takes its cue from contemporary perceptions of Europe, and includes Byzantium (or East Rome) and Muslim al-Andalus in scope. In doing so, it presents a new perspective on Europe in the period. Its chapters assess different scales of action and interaction within this wide space. They take from the reader from the peasants living in small village settlements, via the great city of Constantinople, the taifa emirates, kingdoms from Ireland to Hungary, and the two universal empires, up to contemporary ideas, cosmologies, and representations of the wider world. Viewed in this broad setting, the Latin West''s remarkable expansion during this period, dramatically illustrated by the First Crusade at the century''s end, can best be understood as the poorly controlled overspilling of internal dynamics, as the established public order was disrupted. Elsewhere in Europe, existing structures ... Unknown localization key: "more"
