Anglicky vyšla teprve před několika lety, což naznačuje vzrůstající zájem o tento ztracený klenot, vysoce ceněný svého času například Gottfriedem Bennem. K tomu, že dílo úplně nezapadlo, paradoxně přispělo rozvíjející se studium psychedelických látek a skutečnost, že objevitel LSD a spisovatelův přítel Albert Hofmann z něj obšírně cituje ve své knize LSD, mé nezvedené dítě - Jüngerovi zde věnuje celou jednu kapitolu. Návštěva na Godenholmu je totiž prvním literárním svědectvím o účincích LSD, které na sobě Jünger s Hofmannem na začátku padesátých let opakovaně zkoušeli. The third in a trilogy on the Brecon Merthyr Railway, this book covers the line from Merthyr to Pontsticill where it met the line from Newport and continued to Brecon. Between Pontsticill and Brecon the line ran through beautiful scenery with reservoirs on the west side and the Brecon Beacons on the east with the famous Seven Mile bank to test the ability of fireman not to stall their engine. The book is hugely illustrated as it passes through Pontsticill and on through Dolygaer, Pentir Rhiw, Torpantau and Talybont on Usk, this being one of the most scenic sections of the Western Region. Talyllyn and Brecon itself are also very well illustrated giving an idea also of the variety of services that ran into Brecon, not only from Newport, but from Neath, Hereford and Mid-Wales. Passenger services to Brecon from all these places were withdrawn in December 1962, though freight, mostly domestic coal, services from Merthyr continued until 1964. The area is not without some passenger services however in the present day as the Brecon Mountain Railway has been developed between Pant, Pontsticill and Torpantau. This final volume of three provides views in stark contrast to the industrial section at the south end of the Brecon Merthyr where it runs through the South Wales Coalfield and the former iron producing areas of Merthyr and Dowlais.

The COSSAC planners in 1943 outlined a strategy to capture the city of Caen, some 10 miles in-land from the coastline with an airborne division. On assumption of command of 21st Army Group, General Montgomery up-scaled the invasion and inserting SWORD Beach, gave the task of capturing the city to the 3rd Division on D Day or shortly afterwards. The Germans, however, seeing the number of Allied divisions, many fictional, multiplying on their situation maps, believed that a secondary landing would be made in Normandy. In April 1944, they therefore made significant reinforcements including moving the 21st Panzer Division to the important transport node of Caen that, if held, barred the way onto the more open country south to Falaise. Though aware of the German reinforcement thanks to ULTRA, the Allied aspiration remained to capture Caen and fix the Germans against the British Second Army on the eastern flank of the lodgement. In doing so, it became obvious that the city would not be captured as quickly or cleanly as originally envisaged. On D Day, the 3rd Division faced not just the coastal crust of defences, but German formations deployed in depth, including the 21st Panzer Division barring the way to Caen. Beset with difficulties resulting from Eisenhowerâ ™s decision to â ˜goâ ™ in less-than-ideal conditions, the landing was slow and the division could not develop the necessary momentum to carry them to the city.
