On Photography (0141035781)
Kniha - autor Susan Sontag, 208 stran, anglicky, brožovaná bez přebalu lesklá How do we see the world around us? The Penguin on Design series includes the works of creative thinkers whose writings on art, design and the media have changed our vision forever.Susan Sontag's groundbreaking critique of photography asks forceful questions about the moral and aesthetic issues surrounding this art form. Photographs are everywhere. They have the power to shock, idealize or seduce, they create a sense of nostalgia and act as a memorial, and they can be used as evidence against us or to identify us. In six incisive essays, Sontag examines the ways in which we use these omnipresent images to manufacture a sense of reality and authority in our lives.

Nonhuman Photography - Joanna Zylinska
A new philosophy of photography that goes beyond humanist concepts to consider imaging practices from which the human is absent, as both subject and agent. Today, in the age of CCTV, drones, medical body scans, and satellite images, photography is increasingly decoupled from human agency and human vision. In Nonhuman Photography, Joanna Zylinska offers a new philosophy of photography, going beyond the human-centric view to consider imaging practices from which the human is absent. Zylinska argues further that even those images produced by humans, whether artists or amateurs, entail a nonhuman, mechanical element--that is, they involve the execution of technical and cultural algorithms that shape our image-making devices as well as our viewing practices. At the same time, she notes, photography is increasingly mobilized to document the precariousness of the human habitat and tasked with helping us imagine a better tomorrow. With its conjoined human-nonhuman agency and vision, Zylinska claims, photography functions as both a form of control and a life-shaping force. Zylinska explores the potential of photography for developing new modes of seeing and imagining, and presents images from her own photographic project, Active Perceptual Systems. She also examines the challenges posed by digitization to established notions of art, culture, and the media. In connecting biological extinction and technical obsolescence, and discussing the parallels between photography and fossilization, she proposes to understand photography as a light-induced process of fossilization across media and across time scales.

Environmental Photography Award 2023
While neither denying the great challenges that await us nor concealing the damage inflicted by Man on Nature, the photographs selected for the second edition of the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation's Environmental Photography Award reveal the incredible beauty that our Planet harbours, from the polar regions to the depths of the ocean, or even nestled in the heart of ancestral forests. By reflecting on our relationship towards nature and interrelation between human health and planetary health, the photographers invite us on a journey through images and deliver a message of hope; that together we can still act in a meaningful way, if we join forces to limit the effects of climate change and promote the resilience of ecosystems. The Award is divided among several categories, with a winner for each: Humanity versus Nature, Towards a Sustainable Future, Beneath the Canopy, and Polar Wonders. This book presents opposite every photo, the photographers testimonie, which encourage us to change, to innovate, to invent sustainable solutions to better rethink our lives and our economies. They reveal a real "field of possibilities" for new generations who aspire to a more harmonious relationship with Nature. It is up to every one of us to make this world, where we would coexist in a more responsible and prosperous way, possible. Now is the time for action.

New Deal Photography - Peter Walther
Amid the ravages of the Great Depression, the United States Farm Security Administration (FSA) was first founded in 1935 to address the country’s rural poverty. Its efforts focused on improving the lives of sharecroppers, tenants, and very poor landowning farmers, with resettlement and collectivization programs, as well as modernized farming methods. In a parallel documentation program, the FSA hired a number of photographers and writers to record the lives of the rural poor and “introduce America to Americans.”This book records the full reach of the FSA program from 1935 to 1943, honoring its vigor and commitment across subjects, states, and stylistic preferences. The photographs are arranged into four broad regional sections but otherwise allowed to speak for themselves—to provide individual impressions as much as they cumulatively build an indelible survey of a nation. The images are both color and black-and-white, and span the complete spetrum of American rural life. They show us convicts, cotton workers, kids, and relocated workers on the road. We see subjects victim to the elements of nature as much as to the vagaries of the global economic market. We find the work of such perceptive, sensitive photographers as Marion Post Wolcott, Jack Delano, Russell Lee, Walker Evans, Ben Shahn, and Dorothea Lange, and read their own testimonies to the FSA project and their encounters with their subjects, including Lange’s worn, weather-beaten and iconic Migrant Mother. What unites all of the pictures is a commitment to the individuality and dignity of each subject, as much as to the witness they bear to this particular period of the American past. The subjects are entrenched in the hardships of their historical lot as much as they are caught in universal cycles of growing, playing, eating, aging, and dying. Yet they face the viewer with what is utterly their own: a unique, irreplaceable, often unforgettable presence.

The Use of Photography - Annie Ernaux
The Use of Photography recounts a passionate love affair between Annie Ernaux and the journalist and author Marc Marie, after the two met in January 2003. Ernaux had been receiving intensive chemo for breast cancer during the prior three months, and had lost all her hair from the treatments. At the end of January she had surgery, followed by radiation therapy. The affair took place in different locations and Ernaux describes how, shortly after it began, she found herself entranced each morning by the sight of clothes strewn about, chairs out of place and the remains of their last meal of the evening still on the table – and how painful it felt to put things back in order afterwards. She went and got her camera, and began to take photographs of the scenes of disarray. When she told Marc Marie what she had done, he said he had felt the same desire. Translated by Alison L. Strayer into English for the first time, The Use of Photography is an extraordinary meditation on eroticism, photography and writing, a major work by the 2022 Nobel Prize in Literature laureate.

The Dog in Photography - Raymond Merritt
With more than 400 canine portraits, this book is both a picture tribute to our favorite four-legged friend and a unique history of dogs in photography. From the 19th century right through to today, we see how the camera has been the key witness to our timeless affection for dogs, capturing their beauty, character, joy, and abiding friendship. In celebration of the world’s favorite animal, we bring you over 400 photographs of or about dogs. With pictures from the 19th century to today, the collection includes works by Man Ray, Eric Fischl, Wolfgang Tillmans, Donna Ruskin, Fatima NeJame, Vincent Versace, and of course Elliott Erwitt and William Wegman. Together, their pictures, unique in style but united in canine affection, are testimony if ever there was one that dogs are not only best friends, but also pure photographic inspiration.

In the Shadow of Photography - Magda Stanová
A drawn and handwritten work of non-fiction about the medium of photography, the photography world, and how the invention of photography influenced people's thinking and behavior. It explores topics such as the camera's wormhole-like capabilities, why being photographed causes stage fright, how the present is becoming a stage for the future, analog vs. digital photography, the relationship between the photographer and the photograph, and how we are losing the possibility of gaining an authentic memory of a moment from a photographic attempt to conserve it. "A funny and delicate philosophical survival kit for a better understanding of the influential, omnipresent shadow of photography.” -Joan Fontcuberta "This work by Magda Stanová is a visual essay, not only because she works with numerous photographic reproductions (famous as well as completely private ones), but also and perhaps primarily because of how she thoughtfully contrasts technical perfection with simple drawings which eliminate everything accessory and show only what is essential, though not in the way a chart does, since even the drawings come alive here and lead their own cheerful life.” -Miroslav Petříček Magda Stanová is a multi-disciplinary artist and a senior lecturer at the Department of Theory and History of Art at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague. She is the author of Algorithms in Art (2016) and a co-author of The Pedestrian's Venice (2017).

Metadata: Rethinking Photography in the 21st Century

The term “metadata” is used to describe the information that travels with a digital image file but is unseen within the image itself. In our networked digital environment, metadata is accessed by both human users and artificial intelligences. Software algorithms orchestrate what images we see and exchange while collecting the valuable data generated by our interactions. In our moment, dominated by image-based social media and surveillance, we are becoming increasingly aware that understanding the information that circulates unseen around photographic images is just as important as seeing what they represent. This fascinating, fully-illustrated publication explores new paradigms for understanding the ecology of the photographic image through the work of an international selection of contemporary artists and visual activists. This includes not just the tags or descriptors attached to image files, but the power relationships, biases, and economic interests that are not always visible in the image itself.

Peter Lindbergh. On Fashion Photography (revised edition)
Follow Peter Lindbergh across four decades of pioneering fashion photography. Through countless collaborations with the most venerated names in fashion, the German photographer created new narratives with his humanist approach, which resulted in iconic shots at once introspective and appealing. This book features more than 300 images, many previously unpublished, as well as an updated introduction in which Lindbergh establishes his sentiment on “so-called fashion photography”. The Lindbergh Lens The photographer who altered the landscape of fashion photography It was on a Malibu beach in 1988 that Peter Lindbergh shot the White Shirts series, images now known the world over. Simple yet seminal, the photographs introduced us to Linda Evangelista, Christy Turlington, Rachel Williams, Karen Alexander, Tatjana Patitz, and Estelle Lefébure. This marked the beginning of an era that redefined beauty, and Lindbergh would go on to alter the landscape of fashion photography for the decades that followed. This book gathers more than 300 images from forty years of Lindbergh’s career. It traces the German photographer’s cinematic inflections and humanist approach, which produced images at once seductive and introspective. In 1980 Rei Kawakubo asked Lindbergh to shoot a Commes des Garçons campaign, one of his earlier forays into commercial photography. Kawakubo gave him carte blanche. The following years brought forth collaborations with the most venerated names in fashion and resulted in a relationship of mutual reverence; Lindbergh’s respect for some of the greatest designers of our time is palpable in his portraits. Among those photographed are Azzedine Alaïa, Giorgio Armani, Alber Elbaz, John Galliano, Jean Paul Gaultier, Karl Lagerfeld, Thierry Mugler, Yves Saint Laurent, Jil Sander, and Yohji Yamamoto. Widely considered a pioneer in his field, Lindbergh shirked the industry standards of beauty and instead celebrated the essence and individuality of his subjects. He was pivotal to the rise of models such as Kate Moss, Naomi Campbell, Linda Evangelista, Cindy Crawford, Mariacarla Boscono, Lara Stone, Claudia Schiffer, Amber Valletta, Nadja Auermann, and Kristen McMenamy. Lindbergh’s reach also extended across Hollywood and beyond: Cate Blanchett, Charlotte Rampling, Richard Gere, Isabelle Huppert, Nicole Kidman, Madonna, Brad Pitt, Catherine Deneuve, and Jeanne Moreau all appear in his works. From the picture chosen by Anna Wintour as the cover of her first Vogue issue to the legendary shot of Tina Turner on the Eiffel Tower, it is never the clothes, celebrity, or glamour that takes center stage in a Lindbergh photograph. Each picture conveys the humanity of its subject with a serene melancholy that is uniquely and unmistakably Lindbergh. From the outset of his career, Lindbergh was well-known in the contemporary art world, where his photographs were exhibited in galleries long before they appeared in magazines. This edition features an updated introduction adapted from an interview in 2016, allowing a glimpse behind Lindbergh’s lens, where the photographer recounts his early collaborations, the tenuous relationship between commercial and fine art, and the power of storytelling. The photographer and author Peter Lindbergh (1944–2019) was a master of his craft who made his mark in the halls of photography history, with such credits as shooting the first American Vogue cover under Editor-in-Chief Anna Wintour, bringing together for the first time a group of young women who would become the ’90s supermodels, and numerous exhibitions at renowned institutions including Victoria & Albert Museum in London and Centre Pompidou in Paris, as well as in solo exhibitions at Hamburger Bahnhof, the Berlin Museum for Contemporary Art, Bunkamura Museum of Art in Tokyo, the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts in Moscow, and Kunstpalast in Düsseldorf.

Photography: The Whole Story is a celebration of the most beautiful, meaningful and inspiring photographs that have arisen from this very modern medium. It begins with a succinct overview of photography, placing it in the context of the social and cultural developments that have taken place globally since its arrival. Organized chronologically, the book then traces the rapid evolution of photographic style, period by period and movement by movement. Illustrated, in-depth essays cover every photographic genre, from the early portraits and tableaux to the digitally manipulated montages, split-second sports images, and conceptual photographs of today. The ideas and works of key photographers are assessed to reveal what motivated them, who influenced whom, and what each was striving to achieve. Detailed cultural and individual artist timelines clarify historical context.

Ylla (1911–1955) devoted herself exclusively to animal portraiture at a time when nobody had thought of only photographing animals. She created something new – the genre of expression and personality in animals. This is the story of a “New Woman” par excellence, Ylla was fearless and knew no limits, and of a pioneer animal photographer in Africa and India. The book tells Ylla’s exciting life: She was part of artists’ circles in Belgrade and Paris, during WWII she fled via Marseille to New York where she started her career again from scratch. Originally taking photos in her studio and in zoos she finally traveled to Africa and India where she died in a tragic accident during a water buffalo race. Her Animals in Africa is one of the first books on the subject. Ylla also introduced photography to children’s literature. Her books The Sleepy Little Lion and Two little bears are juvenile classics.

Africa State of Mind: Contemporary Photography Reimagines a Continent - Eshun
A mesmerizing, continent-spanning survey of the most dynamic scenes in contemporary African photography, and an introduction to the creative figures who are making it happen.Africa State of Mind gathers together the work of an emergent generation of photographers from across Africa, including both the Maghreb and sub-Saharan Africa. It is both a summation of new photographic practice from the last decade and an exploration of how contemporary photographers from the continent are exploring ideas of Africanness to reveal Africa to be a psychological space as much as a physical territory a state of mind as much as a geographical place.Dispensing with the western colonial view of Africa in purely geographic or topographic terms, Ekow Eshun presents Africa State of Mind in four thematic parts: Hybrid Cities; Inner Landscapes; Zones of Freedom; and Myth and Memory. Each theme, introduced by a text by Eshun, presents selections of work by a new wave of African photographers who are looking both outward and inward: capturing life among the sprawling cities and multitudinous conurbations of the continent, turning the legacy of the continent s history into the source of resonant new myths and dreamscapes and exploring questions of gender, sexuality and identity. Each of the photographers seeks to capture the experience of what it means, and how it feels, to live in Africa today.Table of ContentsIntroduction 1. Hybrid City 2. Inner Landscapes 3. A Long Arc: Photography and the American South - Imani Perry
Collects over 175 years of key moments in the visual history of the Southern United States, with over two hundred and fifty photographs taken from 1845 to present. The South is perhaps the most mythologized region in the United States and also one of the most depicted. Since the dawn of photography in the nineteenth century, photographers have articulated the distinct and evolving character of the South’s people, landscape, and culture and reckoned with its fraught history. Indeed, many of the urgent questions we face today about what defines the American experience—from racism, poverty, and the legacy of slavery to environmental disaster, immigration, and the changes wrought by a modern, global economy—appear as key themes in the photography of the South. The visual history of the South is inextricably intertwined with the history of photography and also the history of America, and is therefore an apt lens through which to examine American identity. A Long Arc: Photography and the American South accompanies a major exhibition at the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, with more than one hundred photographers represented, including Walker Evans, Robert Frank, Gordon Parks, William Eggleston, Sally Mann, Carrie Mae Weems, Dawoud Bey, Alec Soth, and An-My Lê. Insightful texts by Imani Perry, Sarah Kennel, Makeda Best, and Rahim Fortune, among others, illuminate this broad survey of photographs of the Southern United States as an essential American story. Copublished by Aperture and High Museum of Art, Atlanta Contributors Imani Perry is the Hughes-Rogers Professor of African American Studies at Princeton University and a faculty associate with the programs in law and public affairs, gender and sexuality studies, and jazz studies. The Opéra Volume VII : Magazine for Classic & Contemporary Nude Photography - Matthias Straub
In a world full of confusion and debates about human identity, one truth always remains: Human beings are bound to their bodies and only their spirit can transcend these boundaries. In this sense, THE OPÉRA Volume VII is once again a search for the constraints on human corporeality and how they can be overcome by means of fantasy and knowledge. The numerous photographs and portraits strive to provide viewers’ powers of imagination with inspiring impulses, in which the narrative of being human is given unconventional perspectives. Since, at the root of art, this truth fundamentally also retains its validity: People are interested in people. Artists: Agne`s Lenglet (France), Anna Ritsch (Austria), Dario Salamone (Italy), Eric Kellermann (Netherlands), Gonzalo G. Be´nard (Portugal), Marius Budu (Denmark), Pola Esther (Poland), Julia SH (Sweden), Thomas Sing (Germany) and many others

Flora Photographica: The Flower in Contemporary Photography - William A. Ewing, Danaé Panchaud
Vivid, bold, spectacular and unexpected: a definitive overview of one of contemporary photography’s most innovative fields, showcasing flower imagery by more than 120 of the world’s leading practitioners. There has never been a period in photography’s long history – no school, no movement – when flowers have not been a central focus, whether in the form of the classic still life, the botanical study, incorporated into portraiture and studies of the human body, documented in street photography, or used subversively in surrealist collage and montage. Today, flower photography remains in full bloom, with photographers the world over depicting flowers and floral motifs in novel ways. Featuring works by more than 120 photographers, Flora Photographica links the very best of flower photography from the past thirty years with its predecessors – canonical floral studies from the realms of photography, botanical illustration, drawing and painting that have marked the collective imagination for centuries, if not millennia. Works by contemporary photographers such as Cindy Sherman, Thomas Ruff, Vik Muniz, Valérie Belin, Viviane Sassen, and Martin Schoeller appear across nine thematic chapters, complemented by two in-depth essays by curators William A. Ewing and Danaé Panchaud exploring the relationship between contemporary works and the rich traditions of floral art and photography. Vibrant and abundant with myriad species of flora, this stunning book is both a celebration of organic beauty and a keen look at the meaning of flowers in human culture – not to mention an insightful look at a key aspect of contemporary photography – making it a must-have publication for lovers of flowers and photography alike.

Yo! The early days of Hip Hop 1982-84. Photography by Sophie Bramly - Sophie Bramly
Over 250 rarely seen stunning images documenting the rise of hip-hop in the early 1980s. This book features many stunning and intimate images of a star-studded roll call of legendary hip-hop figures, many of whom were just relatively known at the time, and while all in their ascendency - including Kool Herc, Afrika Bambaataa, Grandmixer DST, Jazzy Jay, Red Alert, Grandmaster Melle Mel, Kurtis Blow, Lisa Lee, the Fat Boys, Run-DMC, Beastie Boys & many more. In the early 1980s, hip hop was becoming a fully- formed cultural force rather than just a musical fashion and this book documents all four essential elements of this new world of Hip-Hop: the emcees, the deejays, the graffiti artists and the breakdancers. Here you will see legendary graffiti artists captured at work and play (such as Keith Haring, Dondi, Futura, Phase One, Zephyr, Lady Pink), and breakdancers including members of Magnificent Force, Dynamic Breakers, and the Rock Steady Crew. Sophie Bramly lived in New York in the early 1980s and became firmly embedded in the emergent scene. The book features many stunning, intimate images of a star-studded roll call of legendary hip hop figures, all of whom were only just getting known or in their ascendency. These include Kool Herc, Afrika Bambaataa, Grandmixer DST, Jazzy Jay, Red Alert, Grandmaster Melle Mel, Kurtis Blow, Lisa Lee, the Fat Boys, Run-DMC, Beastie Boys and many more. Bramly knew that hip hop was becoming a cultural force rather than just a musical fashion, and spent many hours photographing the four essential elements of this new world: the emcees, the deejays, the graffiti artists and the break dancers. So aside from the many stars of hip-hop you will also see legendary graffiti artists captured at work and play, such as Keith Haring, Dondi, Futura, Phase One, Zephyr and Lady Pink, as well as breakdancers including members of Magnificent Force, Dynamic Breakers and the Rock Steady Crew. In 1984, Bramly returned to France where she became deeply involved in bringing Hip-Hop to Europe, continuing to photograph and document this culture. In 1987 Bramly presented and hosted Yo! MTV Raps, the first ever hip-hop show on the channel. "In 1981, photographer Sophie Bramly moved from France to New York and for two years documented the Big Apple’s burgeoning hip-hop scene, taking pictures of graffiti artists, breakdancers and rappers such as the Beastie Boys and Run-DMC.” - The Guardian “This wonderfully hefty photography title documents the early years of hip hop”. - Record Culture "During the early 80s, on Saturday nights at the Roxy in downtown Manhattan and at the Bronx River Center, acts like Run-D.M.C., Afrika Bambaataa and Fab 5 Freddy created a totally new scene in New York. French photojournalist Sophie Bramly moved to New York in 1981, when she was just 21, and began photographing it all - when no one else was paying attention”. - I-D

The Monocle Book of Photography: Reportage from Places Less Explored - Tyler Brûlé, Andrew Tuck, Joe Pickard, Richard Spencer Powell
The best photo assignments from the Monocle archive, published to mark the magazine's fifteenth anniversary. Back in 2007 the first issues of Monocle magazine hit newsstands and kiosks around the globe. At its core was a pledge to commission all original photography – capturing the world on film, on the ground and in the moment. The cover of that first issue featured a Japanese helicopter pilot from the country's defence force – taken as part of a 10-day reportage assignment for both photographer and writer. In the years since, Monocle has continued in its pursuit of documenting the world through its unique lens – from embassies and residences to world leaders and cultural stars. Each issue has featured a dedicated photographic Expo section celebrating lesser-known locales, obscure events and curious characters through truly outstanding photography. Alpine wrestlers, Syrian outposts, French legionnaires, noodle-makers, game show hosts and private member’s clubs have all graced the pages. The Monocle Book of Photography draws on the best of these photographic stories from an archive a decade and a half in the making. A handsome linen bound edition with the highest quality gloss paper and printing, the book also features supporting text about the photo assignments and the stories behind them, including first hand accounts from the photographers involved.

Our Selves: Photographs by Women Artists From Helen Kornblum - Roxana Marcoci
This publication highlights the exceptional gift of 108 photographs by women artists from the collection of Helen Kornblum to The Museum of Modern Art. Conceived in conjunction with an exhibition opening at The Museum of Modern Art in 2022, this publication focuses on an exceptional gift of 108 photographs by women artists from the collection of Helen Kornblum, distinguished member of MoMA’s Committee on Photography. The publication will highlight this significant acquisition, which contributes to the Museum’s continuous effort to research and rethink twentieth century art history narratives by amplifying the presence of women artists. Like the exhibition, the book will be structured around thematic groupings, arranged chronologically, and each prefaced by a short text. Special attention will be devoted to topics such as: pictorialist portraiture, surrealist explorations, portraits of artists, the social documentary, advertising, photography and language, photojournalism, gender and the media, still life and domesticity, performance for the camera, and to the camera as a means of personal artistic expression. From modernists such as Claude Cahun and Yva to contemporary photographer Catherine Opie, many of the works in this volume elicit conversations about queer subjectivity. Themes related to colonial history and indigeneity are addressed in photographic projects by both Native artists such as Cara Romero and Hulleah Tsinhnahjinnie, and non-Native practitioners including Graciela Iturbide, Sharon Lockhart, Meridel Rubenstein, Tatiana Parcero, and Tracey Moffatt. Lorna Simpson and Carrie Mae Weems offer uniquely feminist African-diasporic viewpoints on the relationship of race and gender. Our Selves presents a series of new perspectives that rise to our current moment, addressing the urgent need for more intersectional conversations in the arts.

Wolfgang Tillmans: A Reader - Roxana Marcoci, Phil Taylor
Published in advance of Wolfgang Tillmans’s forthcoming large-scale survey at MoMA, this anthology brings together for the first time more than thirty years of interviews and texts, offering a unique window into his prodigious writerly output. Wolfgang Tillmans: A Reader is a panoramic collection of interviews and writings from an artist for whom language has always been a significant means of creative expression. Arranged chronologically, the assembled texts reflect Tillmans’s thinking on photography, music, politics, nightlife, astronomy, spirituality, and activism. The sources are as varied as their content, with statements and conversations that originally appeared in exhibition catalogues rubbing up against social-media posts and song lyrics. Whether discussing his own work as a photographer or drawing out the thoughts of others, Tillmans is a generous interlocutor with a refreshing clarity of thought. This timely and visually rich publication tracks Tillmans’s contributions to art and cultural criticism in tandem with the social and political shifts of the past thirty years. “Wolfgang Tillmans is not only a great artist, he’s a joyous intellectual whose generosity, wit, and good-natured skepticism is political, authentic, and playfully profound. Read this volume and marvel at his highbrow yet unpretentious theories on abstraction combined with a low-level appreciation of the down and dirty. Thrill to Wolfgang’s magically elitist yet of-the-people reinvention of ‘real’ photography and weep at the beauty of his love for the ‘unforeseen.’ Can printed museum art-talk be so smart that it becomes sexually arousing for the reader? Sure it can. And this is just the book to prove that.” ―John Waters “For over thirty years, Wolfgang Tillmans has been surveying culture and politics, as attentive to the production of news as he is to the radical intimacies of the nightclub or protest. Through his lens the world recovers its complexity. In an era of dangerous simplifications, we need his work more than ever.” ―Olivia Laing “In perusing this Reader, I kept on thinking of two things: the generosity that allows the artist to share his worlds with us, and the possibilities of using artistic practice to resist and challenge the asymmetries of our times.” ―Bonaventure Soh Bejeng Ndikung

Ways of Seeing - John Berger
Based on the BBC television series, John Berger''s Ways of Seeing is a unique look at the way we view art, published as part of the Penguin on Design series in Penguin Modern Classics.''Seeing comes before words. The child looks and recognizes before it can speak.''''But there is also another sense in which seeing comes before words. It is seeing which establishes our place in the surrounding world; we explain that world with words, but word can never undo the fact that we are surrounded by it. The relation between what we see and what we know is never settled.'' John Berger''s Ways of Seeing is one of the most stimulating and influential books on art in any language. First published in 1972, it was based on the BBC television series about which the Sunday Times critic commented: ''This is an eye-opener in more ways than one: by concentrating on how we look at paintings . . . he will almost certainly change the way you look at pictures.'' By now he has.John Berger (b. 1926) is an art critic, painter and novelist.born in Hackney, London. His novel G. (1972) won both the James Tait Black Memorial Prize and the Booker Prize. If you enjoyed Ways of Seeing, you might like Susan Sontag''s On Photography, also available in Penguin Modern Classics.''Berger has the ability to cut right through the mystification of professional art critics ... he is a liberator of images: and once we have allowed the paintings to work on us directly, we are in a much better position to make a meaningful evaluation''Peter Fuller, Arts Review''The influence of the series and the book ... was enormous ... It opened up for general attention areas of cultural study that are now commonplace''Geoff Dyer in Ways of Telling''One of the most influential intellectuals of our time''Observer

Válka za studena/Serving it cold - Vladimír Birgus, Josef Moucha
This is the first publication in book form of the photographic set Serving It Cold: Photographs from Basic Training in the Czechoslovak People's Army. It is a parable about whirling round a core of nothingness. The photographs reveal the world of men dragged into a trap that pretends to be a game about being soldiers. Today, many years after they were first taken, these original photographs by Josef Moucha seem like ghostly dirty tricks, staged with numerous extras in expensive stage sets. In fact, they are shots taken at the start of the 1980s, an unembellished, realistic look from inside. The photographs are introduced by Vladimír Birgus, a respected photographer and expert on photography: ‘It is the complexity of Moucha's photographic diary from the army which contributes to his photographs evoking a geyser of recollections in everyone who experienced compulsory military service under Communist rule.' ‘Unique amongst Czech documentary photographs,' he remarks, ‘the set provides a many-layered view of compulsory military service in the years of the restored hard-line Communist regime, after the crushing of the Prague Spring reform movement in August 1968. In quality, size, and authenticity it is unparalleled in Czech post-war photography. [...] Their importance has become more evident with the passing of so many years, because they are not only the photographic diary of one conscript; they are also wide-ranging testimony about that period and about the conflict between individualism and totalitarianism.'

Making a Scene! - Tracy Xavia Karner
The sociologist investigated the art scene in Houston, Texas and documented the social history of ‘who did what and when’ to create an international photography scene in such an unlikely place. Making a Scene! is the story of how visionary individuals created an international art world around photography. A classic Texas tale of seemingly quixotic ideas, audacious goals, oil booms and busts, generous philanthropists, southern sensibilities, grandiosity, and resolve, this book documents the social history of ‘who did what and when’ to create an international photography scene in such an unlikely place as Houston. Beginning with MFAH Director Bill Agee’s early dream of a photography department, a vibrant and engaged photography scene grew. What was once unimaginable became imaginable and then continued to grow and flourish through the work of Anne Tucker at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, local photographers who created Houston Center for Photography, and Wendy Watriss and Fred Baldwin, with Petra Benteler, who started the first international photography festival in the U.S., FotoFest. The scene that Anne, Fred, Wendy, and others fostered in Houston is nothing short of remarkable. This is the story of how Houston became the place to be for photography.

Why We Photograph Animals - Huw Lewis-Jones
A compelling visual anthology of one of photography’s most popular subjects, reframing our understanding of why we photograph animals and why photographing them matters to us and the planet. A visual overview of the history and future of animal photography, Why We Photograph Animals encourages us to think and rethink the way we have looked at - and used - animals and to consider our future relationships with non-human species. Multi-stranded, this book features the work of more than 100 photographers supported by thematic essays that provide historical context; interviews with and contributions by leading contemporary photographers that explore their influences, methods and motivations; and dazzling visual collections that present the very best animal photography from its inception to the present day. The result is a book that will engage those with an interest in wildlife photography and the natural world, but also those with a concern for the future of the planet. Huw Lewis-Jones’s expert authorship and curation celebrates extraordinary images by brilliant photographers, but also allows us to understand why people have photographed animals at different points in history and what it means in the present. Why We Photograph Animals is deliberately not a conventional history of wildlife photography. It’s an exploration of the animal in photography. It speaks to our ongoing desire to look at animals; to understand, misunderstand and appreciate them; to use and abuse them; to neglect or come to value and protect them.

1000 Nudes - Hans-Michael Koetzle, Uwe Scheid
The history of nude photography is the history of people’s fascination with the topic. Indeed, the photographic depiction of the human body is the only subject that has enthralled photographers, theoreticians and consumers over such a long period – more than 150 years. No other motif is as prevalent as this one during all the phases of development comprising the history of photography, no other is present, whatever the technique, and is a subject of discussion within the context of nearly all aesthetic movements. Nor has any other pictorial topic produced such a variety of specialities as the nude: from the ethnological interpretation of the body to the glamour shot, from nudist photography to the pin-up of today. No other photographic field of application has inspired as much desire as it has awakened official wrath. 1000 Nudes offers a cross-section of the history of nude photography, ranging from the earliest nude daguerrotypes and ethnographic nude photographs to experimental nude photography. The period of time spanned by this work is from 1839 to roughly 1939, from the medium’s infancy to the end of the classic modernist period. Content-wise, the book pays tribute to the full range of pictorial approaches, from the manually elaborated artistic nudes of the turn of the century, enveloped in layers of theory, to the “obscene” postcard motifs which had not the slightest artistic pretension and were intended to exert a maximum effect on the buyer’s wallet
