Northern Ireland - Marc Mulholland

From the Plantation of Ulster in the seventeenth century to the entry into peace talks in the late twentieth century the Northern Irish people have been engaged in conflict - Catholic against Protestant, Republican against Unionist. The traumas of violence in the Northern Ireland Troubles have cast a long shadow. For many years, this appeared to be an intractable conflict with no pathway out. Mass mobilisations of people and dramatic political crises punctuated a seemingly endless succession of bloodshed. When in the 1990s and early 21st century, peace was painfully built, it brought together unlikely rivals, making Northern Ireland a model for conflict resolution internationally. But disagreement about the future of the province remains, and for the first time in decades one can now seriously speak of a democratic end to the Union between Northern Ireland and Great Britain as a foreseeable possibility. The Northern Ireland problem remains a fundamental issue as the United Kingdom recasts its relationship with Europe and the world. In this completely revised edition of his Very Short Introduction Marc Mulholland explores the pivotal moments in Northern Irish history - the rise of republicanism in the 1800s, Home Rule and the civil rights movement, the growth of Sinn Fein and the provisional IRA, and the DUP, before bringing the story up to date, drawing on newly available memoirs by paramilitary militants to offer previously unexplored perspectives, as well as recent work on Nothern Irish gender relations. Mulholland also includes a new chapter on the state of affairs in 21st Century Northern Ireland, considering the question of Irish unity in the light of both Brexit and the approaching anniversary of the 1921 partition, and drawing new lessons for the future.ABOUT THE SERIES: The Very Short Introductions series from Oxford University Press contains hundreds of titles in almost every subject area. These pocket-sized books are the perfect way to get ahead in a new subject quickly. Our expert authors combine facts, analysis, perspective, new ideas, and enthusiasm to make interesting and challenging topics highly readable.

How to Fix Northern Ireland - Malachi O'Doherty

''Deeply researched and often revelatory... variegated and sensitive'' Literary ReviewIt is twenty-five years since the Good Friday Agreement brought an end to the terrible violence that rocked Northern Ireland for decades. Yet, in this controversial and provocative new book, Malachi O''Doherty argues that it completely ignored the real reason behind the conflict and instead left a festering wound at the core of society. Part memoir, part history and part polemic, How to Fix Northern Ireland shows how the country''s deep division is simply not about whether it should be governed as part of Ireland or as part of Britain - as presumed by the agreement - but rather is fundamentally sectarian, an inter-ethnic stress comparable to racism.O''Doherty reveals how the split between catholics and protestants continues to invade everyday life - from education and segregated housing, from street protests, bonfires and parades to the high politics of power sharing and Brexit - and asks what can be done to solve a centuries-old social rift and heal the relationship at the heart of the problem.

Fishers of Men - The Gripping True Story of a British Undercover Agent in Northern Ireland - Rob Lewis

Fishers of Men is the true account of secret operations in Northern Ireland carried out by the British Army's most clandestine unit. It tells the unique story, through Rob Lewis's own extraordinary experiences, of an essential instrument in the fight against terrorism, that of covert intelligence gathering. The men and women who work in this field are a special breed who undertake hazardous risks with unflinching tenacity and professionalism - the price of negligence is high, and the need for secrecy must be preserved even at the expense of personal relationships. The sheer determination and single-mindedness required to achieve selection to this secret world is graphically described, as well as how, against seemingly impossible odds, the operators of the FRU managed to persuade terrorists and their close associates to turn informer. The methods the unit used to target, recruit and handle their contacts, how they protected their informants, and the terrifying life their agents led are all told by an agent handler, using many of his cases to illustrate the sharpness, intelligence (and sense of humour) essential to the job. Fishers of Men fills a gap in the available information about the secret war against terrorism in Northern Ireland. It is a gap that has so far remained largely unexplored - until Rob Lewis's informative and explosive book.

The Northern Ireland Troubles - Aaron Edwards

In this fully illustrated introduction, acclaimed historian Dr Aaron Edwards provides a concise overview of one of the most difficult and controversial actions in recent history.Spanning 38 years of the ‘Troubles’, the British Army’s deployment in Northern Ireland (codenamed Operation Banner) was one of the most difficult and controversial in its recent history. Over 10,000 troops were on active service during much of the campaign, which saw armoured vehicles, helicopters and special forces deployed onto the streets of Ulster. In this book, Dr Aaron Edwards considers the strategic, operational and tactical aspects of Operation Banner, as the Army’s military objectives morphed from high-profile peacekeeping into a covert war against the IRA. Using personal testimony from both sides of the sectarian divide, as well as insights from the soldiers themselves, he presents an authoritative introduction to the Army’s role in the Troubles, providing expert analysis of Operation Banner’s successes and failures.Updated and revised for the new edition, with full-colour maps and 50 new images, this is an accessible introduction to the complicated yet fascinating history of modern Britain‘s longest military campaign.

A major achievement. Ferriter delivers his material with the authority and conviction of a born teacher'' Irish Independent Ireland is a strikingly different country now to the one it was in the mid-1990s. Dramatic economic, social and cultural changes, including the Celtic Tiger boom and increasingly secular debate about abortion, the status of women and same-sex marriage underlined the scale of the transformation. The new diversity of the population and literary and musical prowess also revealed a country experiencing rapid alteration. The road to peace - that saw an end to war in Northern Ireland and culminated in the first visit to southern Ireland of a reigning British monarch in 100 years - illuminated the new Anglo-Irish dynamic. Explosive revelations about deep betrayals from the past destroyed the credibility of the traditionally powerful Catholic Church. And in the wake of the 2008 financial crash, Ireland rebounded and rebuilt to great success, but remained plagued by health and housing failures. Economic recovery, the end of civil war politics, ever closer European involvement and Anglo-Irish highs were followed by Brexit lows and increasing talk of Irish unity. There is much to open people''s eyes in this riveting account of contemporary Ireland. Ireland - Martin J. Dougherty

Become a visual explorer through more than 200 stunning images that celebrate the beautiful country, culture, and history of Ireland. Ireland holds a special place in people’s hearts—even for many who haven’t been there. To some the appeal is its natural beauty, to others it’s the history; to some it’s the country’s strong folk tradition, to others it feels like a mystical place. This beautiful guide celebrates the island’s most evocative and beautiful places, whether in nature or man-made, from the miles of near-empty beaches to the Mourne Mountains in County Down, from the pretty fishing towns of County Cork to Dublin’s elegant Georgian streets. Featuring images from both the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland, Ireland ranges widely across landscapes and history, from rugged cliffs and rolling hills to mysterious stone circles, magnificent cathedrals and ruined abbeys; and from medieval forts and castles to grand Victorian follies and villages abandoned during the Potato Famine. While some images such as the striking basalt columns of the Giant’s Causeway may be familiar, others you may know only from Game of Thrones and the Star Wars films but never realized that they, too, are in Ireland.

Making Sense of a United Ireland - Brendan O'Leary

''Should be required reading for everyone - including unionists - who are interested in and concerned about the fate of this island'' Dublin Review of Books''Compelling'' Financial TimesWill Ireland really reunite?A century ago the resolution to Ireland’s long struggle for independence was a settlement that saw six of its northern counties remain in the United Kingdom while the other twenty-six formed the new Republic of Ireland. Since partition the unification of the two parts of the island has seemed impossible, particularly because of the bloody legacy of past conflict. However, by 2030, if not sooner, demographic and electoral advantages of Ulster unionists, who wish to remain part of the UK, will be over. And in the light of Brexit, the rising popularity of the Irish nationalist party Sinn Féin, political developments both sides of the border, and within Great Britain, Irish unification referendums will become increasingly likely. Yet even those who want these to happen are not prepared.Making Sense of a United Ireland is a landmark exploration of this most contentious of issues. Distinguished political scientist Brendan O''Leary - a global expert on divided places, who has been profoundly engaged with the Irish question for nearly four decades - argues that the time to consider the future of the island of Ireland is now.''The first comprehensive manual of Irish unification'' Irish Times‘Several books have been written about this subject . . . for sheer intellectual firepower O’Leary wins first prize’ Business Post ''A tour de force'' Globe and Mail''A must-read for anyone who lives in Northern Ireland and thinks seriously about its future. The Northern Bank Job - Glenn Patterson

The true story of one of the biggest bank heists in Irish and British history – and the questions that remain. On a Sunday evening in December 2004, two young men were at home with their families. Both worked for the Northern Bank’s cash centre in Belfast. They heard knocks on their front doors. Within a few minutes, masked men invaded their homes, overpowered their loved ones and disabled their electronic devices. It was made clear to the two bank officials that they had a choice: do what they were told or their families would die.Over the course of the following day, £26.5 million was stolen from the Northern Bank: the biggest cash heist in Irish and British history. The two men whose families were held hostage simply re-labelled vast amounts of cash as rubbish and wheeled huge bags to a van waiting outside in the street, yards from Belfast’s City Hall. The robbers’ knowledge of the inner workings of the bank was astonishing. They deployed a large crew of drivers, guards, watchers and gunmen. It was immediately obvious that only one organization had the ability to plan and execute such an audacious, minutely-planned robbery: the Irish Republican Army. But the IRA was supposed to be demobilized as a result of the Good Friday Peace Agreement signed six years earlier. The leaders of Sinn Féin (who were also leaders of the IRA) vehemently denied they had anything to do with it.No-one believed them. The governments in London, Dublin and Washington were outraged. Yet no one was ever been convicted of any crime relating to the heist and little more than two years later, Sinn Féin was in government in Northern Ireland. In the wake of the twentieth anniversary of this bizarre robbery, Glenn Patterson builds on his popular BBC podcast to shed new light on the story of the infamous heist, the victims, the organizers and the abortive, at times comically inept, attempts to find the people who carried it out.

A History of Ireland - Connolly Dominic

The history of Ireland is both complex and connected to the wider world: it was the first place in the British Isles to be settled by Christian monks, and has suffered internal strife, Viking invasion, Norman colonization, mass migration to the New World, civil war and eventually independence in the early 20th century. Today, Ireland is a dynamic country with a blossoming economy and culture. Arranged chronologically from ancient times to the 21st century, History of Ireland provides a pictorial exploration of a land that is well-known but often little understood. Discover the remains of the country’s many Iron Age hill forts, such as the atmospheric stone fort at Grianán Aileach; explore the first Christian colonies in the monastic settlement at Glendalough in County Wicklow; read of the legend of St Patrick, and stood atop a hillside and banished snakes from Ireland – prompting all serpents to slither away into the sea; discover the Book of Kells, an illuminated manuscript of the Celtic Gospel written in the 9th century; learn about the Plantation of Ulster in the 17th century, where English and Scottish settlers established Protestant communities, causing lasting communal strife; understand the Easter Rising and the traumatic war for independence, which led to Ireland’s current political shape; and experience modern Ireland, a place of prosperity centered on the thriving city of Dublin. 180 photographs offering a pictorial history of the emerald isle Expert text provides a compact history of Ireland Will interest all with Irish ancestry or with an interest in the island

Northern Spain - James Taylor, Dana Facaros, Michael Pauls

New from Bradt is Northern Spain, the most detailed guidebook available to a unique, compelling part of Iberia - a deep dive into a hitherto under-rated region. Incisive context covers modern history and environmental, social and economic issues, enabling the reader to take well-informed decisions about how best to experience a region extending from Galicia, in Spain''s far northwest, east through the Basque Country to Navarra. Northern Spain offers enormous variety. In a single trip, you could explore Celtic heritage in Asturias, feast on Atlantic octopus in Galicia, enjoy pinxtos snacks before a traditional asador barbeque in the Basque Country, surf breakers in the Bay of Biscay, walk and watch wildlife in the mountainous Picos de Europa National Park, travel along the winding Feve narrow-gauge railway or the luxurious Transcantabrico train and enjoy a gentle bike ride along a ''Via Verde'' (a disused railway line converted into walking and cycling routes). And northern Spain''s delights do not stop there. Hikers and pilgrims alike tread along three ancient trails that comprise the Camino de Santiago, with the shrines of Santiago de Compostela as their ultimate destination. La Rioja is Spain''s most renowned wine region, where wineries include the mind-bending Marques de Riscal - designed by Frank Gehry, who designed Bilbao''s Guggenheim Museum. Northern Spain is also a genuinely surprising region. Bagpipes are just as important a part of musical culture in some parts as they are in Scotland. In summer, homes in the wine-making region around Ponte Vedra are transformed into pop-up restaurants, with visitors invited to dine in garages, living rooms and homey kitchens - a traditional way of selling excess wine. Some medieval churches defy expectations, being decorated with sexy scenes that would be at home in the Kama Sutra. And if you''re up for a challenge, why not try to speak Euskarri, the unique Basque language with no known linguistic relatives. With heatwaves increasingly characterising Spain''s popular Mediterranean coast in summer, the country''s north (known as ''Green Spain'') offers more clement conditions for a rewarding holiday. And what better travelling companion can you have than Bradt''s Northern Spain?

Ireland: The Autobiography - John Bowman

Ireland in its own words: a dazzling compendiumOver the past hundred years, Ireland has undergone profound political, social and cultural changes. But one thing that has not changed is the Irish genius for observation and storytelling, invective and self-scrutiny. Ireland: The Autobiography draws upon this genius to create a portrait of a century of Irish life through the words of the people who lived it.Broadcaster and historian John Bowman has mined archives, diaries and memoirs to create a remarkably varied and delightfully readable mosaic of voices and perspectives. Ireland: The Autobiography is a brilliantly selected, wide-ranging and engrossing take on the last century of Irish life. It gives us a portrait of Ireland unlike anything we''ve read before.''Absorbing and illuminating ... John Bowman has selected a range of accounts of Irish life that do justice to what happened, what it felt like, and the personal and societal experiences alongside the "official" version.'' A Brief History of Ireland - Richard Killeen

From the dawn of history to the decline of the Celtic Tiger - how Ireland has been shaped over the centuries.Ireland has been shaped by many things over the centuries: geography, war, the fight for liberty. A Brief History of Ireland is the perfect introduction to this exceptional place, its people and its culture.Ireland has been home to successive groups of settlers - Celts, Vikings, Normans, Anglo-Scots, Huguenots. It has imported huge ideas, none bigger than Christianity which it then re-exported to Europe after the fall of the Roman Empire. In the Tudor era it became the first colony of the developing English Empire. Its fraught and sometimes brutal relationship with England has dominated its modern history. Killeen argues that religion was decisive in all this: Ireland remained substantially Catholic, setting it at odds with the larger island culturally, religiously and politically. But its own culture and identity have stayed strong, most obviously in literature with a magnificent tradition of writing from the Book of Kells to the modern masters: Joyce, Yeats, Beckett and Heaney.

Northern Greece - Dana Facaros

This thoroughly updated second edition of Bradt''s Northern Greece guidebook, written by Greece expert and long-time travel writer Dana Facaros, remains the only guide available to a region that includes Épirus, Thessaly, Macedonia and Thrace - complete with their five dramatically beautiful national parks, the country''s highest peaks, mountain lakes, rushing rivers, the world''s deepest gorge and (this is Greece, after all) long sandy beaches. Northern Greece is an up-and-coming, year-round destination that provides the more natural, authentic experience that many travellers seek from this increasingly popular country. Thessaloníki, the country''s vibrant second city, is packed with ancient and Byzantine monuments. Three-pronged Chalkidikí has two peninsulas lined with hedonistic beaches and resorts, while the third comprises silent, holy Mount Athos. Central Macedonia is Alexander the Great country, offering ample archaeological sites, Mount Olympus and Greece''s top vineyards. The handsome port city of Kavála lies near the beach-fringed island of Thássos and ancient Philippi, visited by St Paul. To the east, multi-ethnic Thrace has traditional towns, spectacular birdwatching and the island of ancient mysteries, Samothráki. Western Macedonia, meanwhile, is full of surprises: charming small cities nobody has heard of, such as Édessa, Véria, Kastoriá and Flórina, which neighbours the haunting Prespa lakes. Further west, northern Épirus is home to the breathtaking Víkos Gorge and the Zagorachória''s enchanting stone villages. Beaches dot the coast, if you can drag yourself away from ancient Roman Nikopolis, Dodona or the Necromanteion, where the living consulted the dead. Fringing Thessaly''s great agricultural plain are the Metéora''s pinnacle-topped monasteries and beautiful Lake Plastíra. In Magnesía, Vólos provides the gateway to the Pélion Peninsula and the islands of Skiáthos, Skópelos and Alónissos. This new edition of Bradt''s Northern Greece serves as an ideal travelling companion for visitors of all ages, budgets and interests, from culture lovers to wildlife enthusiasts, history buffs to archaeologists, foodies to wine connoisseurs, mountain climbers to sea kayakers - not to mention those who simply want to relax on a sandy beach before dancing the night away.

Castles of Scotland, Ireland & Wales - Martin J. Dougherty

• 150 striking colour photographs • Expert text explains the fascinating stories behind each castle • Wide selection of entries from Scotland, Ireland, Wales and the Isle of Man Some of the most romantic castles in the world are found in the Celtic nations on the northwestern fringes of Europe. These strongholds may now largely be ruined, but in their dilapidation they have gained an air of mystery and beauty. The people they once protected are gone, the borders they guarded have dissolved, the fragile communities and wooden buildings that built up around them have been dismantled. Only the castles, centuries on, remain – proof of how robustly they were constructed in the first place. From the tip of southern Ireland to northern Scotland, from castles maintained over the centuries to ones that are now mere ruins, Castles of Scotland, Ireland & Wales celebrates the stories behind more than 100 strongholds. In these we find tales of religious dissent, of English Parliamentarians attacking Irish Catholic refuges, of warring Scottish clans, of the Welsh fighting for independence. And in the buildings we find such curiosities as Britain’s only triangular castle or the hiding place for the Scottish crown jewels. With 150 outstanding colour photographs, Castles of Scotland, Ireland & Wales is a brilliant pictorial examination of worlds gone by.

Rail Atlas: Great Britain & Ireland 16th Edition - Joe Brown

Following the sad death of Stuart Baker, the creator of Rail Atlas Great Britain and Ireland, in 2020, we were fortunate that another fine railway cartographer, Joe Brown, agreed to complete the work that Stuart had begun, to revise what became the 15th edition. However, the railway network of Great Britain and Ireland is always changing and never static and revised editions of this atlas are required on a regular basis; the rebuilding of the line from Oxford towards Cambridge and the reinstatement of the Foynes branch in Ireland being examples of some of the additions to this new edition. Fortunately, Joe Brown has agreed to take on this work and this 16th edition will be the first one to be fully edited and revised by him. As with all the previous editions, the Atlas has been fully revised and updated whilst retaining the convenient format of mapping where each page overlaps with that on adjoining pages to make it easier to follow a long-distance route. Where appropriate, additional detailed inset maps have been drawn to show the complex railway developments in metropolitan areas such as Nottingham and Manchester. While some minor changes to the layout have been made, Rail Atlas Great Britain and Ireland remains true to the standards of clarity and accuracy which were the hallmarks of its creator that have made the Atlas an essential work of reference for both railway professionals and enthusiasts since it was first published in the 1970s.

In the Wake of the Empress of Ireland - David Saint-Pierre

‘The masterful, compelling story of salvaging RMS Empress of Ireland, as told by one of the liner’s foremost historians.’ – J. Kent Layton, co-author of On a Sea of Glass and Recreating Titanic and Her SistersIt started with two photographs. These old prints, up for online auction, showed Royal Navy sailors carrying a buoy on a wharf on a Canadian river, with the Pointe-au-Père lighthouse in the background. David Saint-Pierre knew that this had only happened once – when the crew of HMS Essex helped salvage RMS Empress of Ireland. Her sinking at the mouth of the St Lawrence river remains the worst peacetime maritime disaster in Canadian history, with a death toll of over 1,000 people. More passengers died on the Empress of Ireland than on Titanic two years prior. But these images were just the beginning. When Saint-Pierre made contact with the seller, he discovered that they were part of an album of over 500 pictures that told a story that history had largely forgotten: the diving and salvage on the wreck in the summer of 1914, by an international team that featured North American divers working alongside Royal Navy sailors. In the Wake of the Empress of Ireland is that story and more, exploring the aftermath of the Empress disaster.

Wandering Ireland's Wild Atlantic Way - Paul Clements

Following the spirit of the world’s longest coastal driving route, Paul Clements sets out on a meandering journey to discover the real west of Ireland. He travels from Banba’s Crown, the farthest-flung northerly point in Ireland, to World’s End in Kinsale, one of the metal gates embedded into the walls that originally enclosed the old town. Along the way he encounters memorable characters living on the Atlantic edge and presents a unique portrait of their lives. We meet the last man standing on a remote Galway island, listen to the banter at Puck Fair, and hear from a descendant of the original sixteenth-century wild Atlantic woman whose veins run thick with the blood of a warrior queen. Twenty-five years ago Paul hitchhiked the same route. Retracing his steps along the Wild Atlantic Way – this time by car and bike, on horseback and on foot – he looks at how Ireland has changed. He discovers that, although gossip and chatter on street corners has shifted to café culture and social media, everyone still has a story to tell. Laced with wry humour and endless curiosity, this is a distinctive mix of travel writing, social history and nature, while tagging along is the swashbuckling presence of the Celtic sea god, Manannán mac Lir.  Also by this author: ‘The Height of Nonsense: The Ultimate Irish Road Trip’Praise for this author: “Stacks of free copies should be sent to all our tourist desks abroad.” The Irish Times“For sheer pleasure, nothing I read beat Paul Clements’ ‘The Height of Nonsense’.” The Observer“A compulsive, educational, laugh-out-loud read.” Sunday Independent"A fascinating journey around the hidden corners of Ireland."
