Když se Spojencům podařilo na jaře roku 1943 porazit vojska Osy v severní Africe, přišlo na řadu obsazení Itálie, „měkkého podbřišku Evropy“, jak říkal Churchill. Jejím účelem byla eliminace hlavního německého spojence, Duceho fašistické Itálie, a otevření druhé fronty jako pomoc Sovětskému svazu, který bojoval proti Německu na východě. Operační plány této velké obojživelné operace, pojmenované krycím názvem Husky, byly připravovány ve spojeneckých štábech již za tažení v severní Africe.Operace započala vyloděním spojeneckých vojsk na Sicílii dne 9. července 1943. Vylodění bylo úspěšné, jižní fronta Osy se brzy zhroutila, což vedlo k pádu italského fašistického režimu. Hitler však nechtěl Itálii ztratit, a proto sem poslal velké množství prvotřídních jednotek Wehrmachtu a zbraní SS, které navíc měly za úkol potlačit protifašistické hnutí italského lidu. Operace Husky rovněž odlehčila východní frontě, kde Němci museli ukončit operace v Kurském oblouku dílem pro její neúspěch, dílem proto, že mnoho důležitých divizí museli poslat na jih do Itálie. Jak však Spojenci postupovali na sever, odpor Němců sílil, až se nakonec spojenecký postup zastavil na dlouhých a krvavých pět měsíců na přelomu let 1943/1944 v hornaté části střední Itálie pod Římem, za mimořádně kruté zimy. Zvrat přišel až na jaře roku 1944, kdy se podařilo prolomit německé opevněné linie a dobít město Cassino, poté co Spojenci v lednu 1944 provedli podpůrné vylodění u Anzia. I to bylo úspěšné, ale přesto se italské tažení oproti plánu zpožďovalo. V létě roku 1944 byl dobit Řím. To již však Spojenci vítězně postupovali Francií z Normandie na Německo a z jižního pobřeží na sever. Velkou a nezastupitelnou úlohu sehrály v celé italské kampani i letecké jednotky Spojenců, zejména letouny 9. a 12. americké letecké armády.
