Jméno Julien Gracq zůstávalo až do roku 1951 pro naprosto drtivou většinu francouzských čtenářů něčím zcela neznámým, byť ho v té době je bylo možné nalézt na titulní straně již šesti vydaných publikací. Tou šestou byl román Pobřeží Syrt, v češtině vydaný v roce 1971, který získal velmi váženou Goncourtovu cenu, jíž se však Julien Gracq rázně zřekl, i když by mu byla bývala předána velice ceněnými literárními osobnostmi: Sidonií-Gabriellou Colette a Raymondem Queneauem. Pro literární svět to byl naprostý šok, neboť podobného gesta se dosud žádný francouzský spisovatel nedopustil. Julien Gracq tak konečně vstoupil ve známost. Svou první knížku, Na argolském zámku, přitom začal psát v roce 1937, aby vyšla v roce 1939 (česky Dauphin v roce 1996), kdy mu bylo 29 let a kdy se jí dostalo nepředstíraně nadšeného přijetí u André Bretona, jenž ji vnímal jako první skutečný surrealistický román.
