Je Gradiva přeludem, nebo skutečnou dívkou z masa a kostí? Může se Hanold spoléhat na svůj úsudek, nebo ho zcela ovládly bludné představy? Jeho italská výprava se tak postupně stává poutí do temných zákoutí vlastní duše a návratem k sobě samému. Novela Gradiva i dlouho po svém vzniku inspirovala řadu literárních a výtvarných děl (mj. Andrého Bretona, Andrého Massona, Salvadora Dalího) a filmů. A zaujala také slavného psychiatra Sigmunda Freuda, který jejímu rozboru věnoval samostatnou studii.
