The Unconscious - Sigmund Freud

One of Freud''s central achievements was to demonstrate how unacceptable thoughts and feelings are repressed into the unconscious, from where they continue to exert a decisive influence over our lives. This volume contains a key statement about evidence for the unconscious, and how it works, as well as major essays on all the fundamentals of mental functioning. Freud explores how we are torn between the pleasure principle and the reality principle, how we often find ways both to express and to deny what we most fear, and why certain men need fetishes for their sexual satisfaction. His study of our most basic drives, and how they are transformed, brilliantly illuminates the nature of sadism, masochism, exhibitionism and voyeurism.

The Joke and Its Relation to the Unconscious - Sigmund Freud

Building on the crucial insight that jokes use many of the same mechanisms he had already discovered in dreams, Freud developed one of the richest and most comprehensive theories of humour that has ever been produced.Jokes, he argues, provide immense pleasure by allowing us to express many of our deepest sexual, aggressive and cynical thoughts and feelings which would otherwise remain repressed. In elaborating this central thesis, he brings together a dazzling set of puns, anecdotes, snappyone-liners, spoonerisms and beloved stories of Jewish beggars and marriage-brokers. Many remain highly amusing, while others throw a vivid light on the lost world of early twentieth-century Vienna.

The Ego and the Id - Sigmund Freud

All human behaviors and traits, according to this 1923 study, derive from the complicated interactions of three elements of the psyche: the id, the ego, and the superego. One of Sigmund Freud''s most insightful works on the topic of the subconscious, this ground-breaking volume further explores the concepts of the life force and the death force, and the anxieties driven by fear, morality, and guilt.

Through Clouds of Smoke: Freud's Final Days - Suzanne Leclair

The aging Sigmund Freud reflects upon the torments of age, the mouth cancer he suffers due to his cigar addiction, and the rise of Nazism. In 1923, Sigmund Freud, 67 years old and an inveterate cigar smoker, discovers that he has mouth cancer, a truth long hidden from him by doctors. Despite his diagnosis, Freud survived 15 more years, convinced the cigars that were slowly destroying him increased his productivity and gave him control over himself. At the same time, a different sort of cancer was consuming Europe. In 1933, Adolf Hitler rose to power in Germany, annexing Freud''s home country of Austria five years later. His books burning upon fascist pyres and his peers concerned for his life, Freud had no choice but to leave Vienna for London, his final home. With accuracy and sobriety, Suzanne Leclair and William Roy reveal a raw and nuanced portrait of the father of psychoanalysis in his last days. Here, the controversial figure is shown in all his contradictions and weakness, a reflection of our own fears and trials in facing age and death.

The Interpretation of Dreams - Sigmund Freud

Part of the bestselling Capstone Classics Series edited by Tom Butler-Bowdon, this collectible, hard-back edition of The Interpretation of Dreams provides an accessible and insightful edition of this important work of psychology Sigmund Freud's The Interpretation of Dreams introduced his ground-breaking theory of the unconscious and explored how interpreting dreams can reveal the true nature of humanity. Regarded as Freud's most significant work, this classic text helped establish the discipline of psychology and is the foundational work in the field of psychoanalysis. Highly readable and engaging, the book both provides a semi-autobiographical look into Freud’s personal life – his holidays in the Alps, spending time with his children, interacting with friends and colleagues – and delves into descriptions and analyses of the dreams themselves. Freud begins with a review of literature on dreams written by a broad range of ancient and contemporary figures – concluding that science has learned little of the nature of dreams in the past several thousand years. Although the prevailing view was that dreams were merely responses to ‘sensory excitation,’ Freud felt that the multifaceted dimensions of dreams could not be attributed solely to physical causes. The Interpretation of Dreams - Sigmund Freud

Translated by A.A. Brill With an Introduction by Stephen Wilson.Sigmund Freud''s audacious masterpiece, The Interpretation of Dreams, has never ceased to stimulate controversy since its publication in 1900.Freud is acknowledged as the founder of psychoanalysis, the key to unlocking the human mind, a task which has become essential to man''s survival in the twentieth century, as science and technology have rushed ahead of our ability to cope with their consequences.Freud saw that man is at war with himself and often unable to tolerate too much reality. He propounded the theory that dreams are the contraband representations of the beast within man, smuggled into awareness during sleep. In Freudian interpretation, the analysis of dreams is the key to unlocking the secrets of the unconscious mind.

Krysí muž a Vlčí muž - Sigmund Freud

Naproti tomu Vlčí muž osvětluje záhadu psychosexuality, obsahující fantazie kastrace, primární scény a svedení. Freud v této kazuistice předkládá myšlenku zpětného přepracování traumatické zkušenosti, dodatečného proměňování vzpomínek a fantazií. Sigmund Freud (1856–1939), vídeňský neurolog a psychoterapeut, zakladatel psychoanalýzy. Přednášky k úvodu do psychoanalýzy - Sigmund Freud

Freud zde své poznatky reviduje a doplňuje a představuje mimo jiné strukturální model psychiky. Sigmund Freud (1856–1939), vídeňský neurolog a psychoterapeut, zakladatel psychoanalýzy.

Slovenský preklad obsahuje okrem slávneho prípadu Anny O. (vlastným menom Bertha Pappenheim) a ďalších, aj príspevok Josefa Breuera, čo umožňuje porovnať odlišné prístupy Breuera a Freuda k podstate hystérie a spôsobom liečenia.

D. T. Suzuki on the Unconscious in Zen Art, Meditation, and Enlightenment - Steve Odin

A comprehensive study of D. T. Suzuki's Zen philosophy and philosophical psychology in relation to his Buddhist understanding of the "cosmic Unconscious."This book explores how the Japanese philosopher D. T. Suzuki (1870–1966) developed an integral synthesis of Eastern and Western sources to establish a modern philosophical psychology of the "cosmic Unconscious," which he in turn used as the basis to interpret every aspect of Zen art, meditation, and enlightenment. Beyond Freud's personal unconscious and Jung's collective unconscious, according to Suzuki, is the cosmic Unconscious of Zen, which as absolute nothingness is the fountain of inexhaustible creative potentialities and the source of all Zen-inspired arts. The book demonstrates that, like the Kyoto School of modern Japanese philosophy, Suzuki's Zen endeavors to overcome the existential problem of nihilism or relative nothingness by shifting to the openness of absolute nothingness wherein emptiness is fullness and all things are disclosed in the evanescent beauty of their suchness. Suzuki, however, formulates his scheme in terms of a depth psychology where the cosmic Unconscious is the encompassing locus of absolute nothingness. Ultimately, the book argues that, by integrating both Eastern and Western views of the unconscious psyche, including the different schools of Zen and Mahayana Buddhism, ... A General Introduction to Psychoanalysis - Sigmund Freud

Sigmund Freud’s controversial ideas have penetrated Western culture more deeply than those of any other psychologist. The ‘Freudian slip’, the ‘Oedipus complex’, ‘childhood sexuality’, ‘libido’, ‘narcissism’ ‘penis envy’, the ‘castration complex’, the ‘id’, the ‘ego’ and the ‘superego’, ‘denial’, ‘repression’, ‘identification’, ‘projection’, ‘acting out’, the ‘pleasure principle’, the ‘reality principle’, ‘defence-mechanism’ – are all taken for granted in our everyday vocabulary. Psychoanalysis was never just a method of treatment, rather a vision of the human condition which has continued to fascinate and provoke long after the death of its originator. Its central hypothesis, that we live in conflict with ourselves and seek to resolve matters by turning away from reality, did not emerge from experimental science but from self-examination and the unique opportunities for observation presented by the psychoanalytic technique – in particular, from the confessions produced by ‘free-association’ in Freud’s consulting room. Written during the turmoil of the First World War, A General Introduction to Psychoanalysis was distilled from a series of lectures given at Vienna University, but had to wait for the war to end before being made available to the English speaking world.

The young Lucian Freud was described by his friend Stephen Spender as ‘totally alive, like something not entirely human, a leprechaun, a changeling child, or, if there is a male opposite, a witch.’ All that magnetism and brilliance is displayed in the letters assembled here. Ranging from schoolboy messages to his parents, through letters and carefully-chosen, often embellished postcards to friends, lovers and confidants, to correspondence with patrons and associates. They are peppered with wit, affection and irreverence. Alongside rarely seen photographs and Freud’s extraordinary works, each chapter charts Freud’s evolving art alongside intimate accounts of his life. We trace Freud’s early friendships with Stephen Spender, John Craxton, his wild days at art school in East Anglia, and a stint as a merchant seaman. Among the highlights are Freud’s accounts of his first trip to Paris in 1946 and encounters with Picasso, Alexander Calder and Giacometti (who, he thought, looked like Harpo Marx). Foucault Versus Freud

In Foucault Versus Freud, Jerome C. Wakefield offers a novel analysis of one of the great intellectual clashes of our times, the attack on Sigmund Freud''s influential sexual theories by the eminent French philosopher and historian of ideas Michel Foucault.Starting from Foucault''s question, "What makes the psychoanalytic theory of incest acceptable to the bourgeois family?", and drawing on Foucault''s relatively unexplored published lectures as well as his celebrated History of Sexuality, Vol. 1, Wakefield evaluates Foucault''s argument that there is a continuity between the two-century medical anti-masturbation crusade and Freud''s theory, providing the reader with an accessible introduction to Foucault''s conceptual innovations including power/knowledge, the deployment of sexuality, and the use of surveillance and confession as tactics in medicalizing sexuality and reshaping family life.Rather than allowing the argument to stay at the evidentially uncertain level one often finds in Foucault''s writings, Wakefield undertakes close readings of both Freud''s "seduction-theory" texts and later Oedipal-period texts to test whether Foucault''s provocative arguments find support or disconfirmation. Despite identifying weaknesses in Foucault''s position, Wakefield argues that a careful look at Freud''s sexual theories through Foucault''s theoretical lens changes forever the way one sees Freud''s theory—and has the potential to help psychoanalysis move forward ... Radical Freud - Thomas Olver

Radical Freud reveals a radical dimension to Sigmund Freud''s sexual theory that has previously been neglected.Thomas Olver argues that Freud''s radical heritage has been transformed into an orthodox school with an internal stasis that is unassailable from within but increasingly challenged from without as irrelevant. Olver offers a return to the radical elements of Freud''s work, first by reviewing the ways in which Freud''s pioneering sexual theory has been vulgarised since his death, and by recentring his texts. The bisexuality thesis is then reconstructed, based on a close reading of key texts, and contrasted with the better-known Oedipus theory. Olver then explores the philosophical and clinical consequences of this parallel line of sexual theory.Radical Freud will be of great interest to psychoanalysts as well as to academics and scholars of psychoanalytic studies, gender and queer studies, sociology, anthropology, history and philosophy.

Saving Freud - Andrew Nagorski

A dramatic true story about Sigmund FreudÂ’s last-minute escape to London following the German annexation of Austria and the group of friends who made it possible. In March 1938, German soldiers crossed the border into Austria and Hitler absorbed the country into the Third Reich. Anticipating these events, many Jews had fled Austria, but the most famous Austrian Jew remained in Vienna, where he had lived since early childhood. Sigmund Freud was eighty-one years old, ill with cancer, and still unconvinced that his life was in danger. But several prominent people close to Freud thought otherwise, and they began a coordinated effort to persuade Freud to leave his beloved Vienna and emigrate to England. The group included a Welsh physician, NapoleonÂ’s great-grandniece, an American ambassador, FreudÂ’s devoted youngest daughter Anna and his personal doctor. Saving Freud is the story of how this remarkable collection of people finally succeeded in coaxing Freud, a man who seemingly knew the human mind better than anyone else, to emerge from his deep state of denial about the looming catastrophe, allowing them to extricate him and his family from Austria so that they could settle in London. There Freud would live out the remaining sixteen months ... Unknown localization key: "more"

Unconscious Politics - R. D. Hinshelwood

The social sciences and psychology see the origins of human experience from opposite directions: the inner world of the individual vs demands by society to conform. Politicians tend to follow the ideas of the social scientists and mostly ignore unconscious factors. Psychoanalysts, on the other hand, tend to focus on the human unconscious and mostly ignore the complexities of society, economics, and history. Yet, both disciplines are rooted in humanity. Social forces impact on individuals; and society is but the creation of individuals themselves. Thus, factors from both sources have validity and must impact on each other. Hinshelwood has turned to psychoanalysis as the subjective science, to balance the attempted objectivity of social sciences. The creation of a psychosocial model to bring the sparring disciplines together has been attempted many times on a conceptual level but Hinshelwood starts with a singularly interesting convergence at the level of observation. At a time where we face the imminent collapse of human civilisation, and possible extinction of the human species, it is important we attempt to understand the processes that have led us here. We need to find out where the forces of society and the imperatives of our individual selves converge in ... Unknown localization key: "more"

Freud's Women - John Forrester, Lisa Appignanesi

A groundbreaking book which explores the impact of women on the development of Freud''s ideas. No modern writer has affected our views on women as powerfully as Sigmund Freud. And none has been so virulently attacked for both his theories of femininity and for his alleged elevation of personal prejudice to universal pronouncement.FREUD''S WOMEN examines that bold collaboration with his female patients which made psychoanalysis as much their creation as the young Viennese doctor''s. It explores Freud''s family life, his relations with daughter Anna, his ''Antigone'', and his friendships with his followers. From the writer and turn of the century ''femme fatale'', Lou Andreas Salome, to the socialist feminist, Helene Deutsch, early theorist of femininity, to Princesse Marie Bonaparte, who moved from couch to royal court with amazing facility and became head of the French psychoanalytic movement, Freud''s women friends and pupils were extraordinary.

Introducing Freud - Oscar Zarate, Richard Appignanesi

Freud revolutionized the way we think about ourselves. His psychoanalytic terms such as Id, Ego, libido, neurosis and Oedipus Complex have become a part of our everyday vocabulary. But do we know what they really mean?Introducing Freud successfully demystifies the facts of Freud''s discovery of psychoanalysis. Irreverent and witty but never trivial, the book tells the story of Freud''s life and ideas from his upbringing in 19th-century Vienna, his early medical career and his encounter with cocaine, to the gradual evolution of his theories on the unconscious, dreams and sexuality. With its combination of brilliantly clever artwork and incisive text, this book has achieved international success as one of the most entertaining and informative introductions to the father of psychoanalysis.

Laughter, Power, and the Unconscious - Bridget Escolme, Maria Grazia Turri

Laughter, Power, and the Unconscious presents groundbreaking research on humor's psychological and sociopolitical aspects. Based on Shakespeare's Globe experiments, it proposes humor as "manic defence," challenging Freudian theory while examining Renaissance comedy and exploring how humor both subverts and reinforces power structures.

Frink and Freud - Pierre Peju

The fateful meeting of Freud and Horace Frink, and the ensuing scandal that nearly destroyed psychoanalysis In 1909, while on a fundraising lecture tour in America, Sigmund Freud met Horace Frink, an early disciple of his theories of psychoanalysis, whose traumatic childhood and complicated personal life later cast a shadow over Freud’s professional career—and came close to destroying his reputation. This little-known and ultimately tragic true story of two divorces, three deaths, and a ménage à quatre, as well as the questionable motives behind Freud’s involvement in it, is the subject of a groundbreaking collaboration between artist and animator Lionel Richerand and the prizewinning philosopher, biographer, and novelist Pierre Péju.

Freud and Beyond - Stephen Mitchell, Margaret J. Blacková

The classic, in-depth history of psychoanalysis, presenting over a hundred years of thought and theories Sigmund Freud's concepts have become a part of our psychological vocabulary: unconscious thoughts and feelings, conflict, the meaning of dreams, the sensuality of childhood. But psychoanalytic thinking has undergone an enormous expansion and transformation since Freud's death in 1939. With Freud and Beyond, Stephen A. Mitchell and Margaret J. Black make the full scope of twentieth century psychoanalytic thinking—from Harry Stack Sullivan to Jacques Lacan; D.W. Winnicott to Melanie Klein—available for the first time. Richly illustrated with case examples, this lively, jargon-free introduction makes modern psychoanalytic thought accessible at last.
