Dochovala se od něj mj. latinsky psaná korespondence, ale největšího ohlasu dosáhl soubor jeho řecky psaných krátkých filozofických úvah a poznámek, jež si pořizoval během válečných výprav. Byly nazvány Ta eis heauton (?? ??? ??????), česky Hovory k sobě. V nich osobitým způsobem shrnul své myšlenky o lidském údělu a smyslu existence, s maximálním důrazem na etické otázky. Zdůrazňuje v nich pomíjivost lidského bytí, neustálou změnu, vznik a zánik, a odvolává se na princip přirozenosti, na předurčenost všech živých bytostí a jejich rovnost.
