Lidská psychika se podle něj vyznačuje existencí vnitřních částí, které se někdy projevují extrémními způsoby (zneužívání látek, disociace, sebepoškozování, perfekcionismus, posedlost vzhledem, vyhýbání se konfliktům a mnoho dalších). Tím, že se klient naučí těmto částem naslouchat, se jejich projevy stávají méně destruktivními a začíná se u nich projevovat důvod, proč původně vznikly – aby jedinci prospívaly.
