About Love and Other Stories - Chekhov Anton

''the greatest short story writer who has ever lived''Raymond Carver''s unequivocal verdict on Chekhov''s genius has been echoed many times by writers as diverse as Katherine Mansfield, Somerset Maugham, John Cheever and Tobias Wolf. While his popularity as a playwright has sometimes overshadowed his achievements in prose, the importance of Chekhov''s stories is now recognized by readers as well as by fellow authors. Their themes - alienation, the absurdity and tragedy of human existence - have as much relevance today as when they were written, and these superb new translations capture their modernist spirit. Elusive and subtle, spare and unadorned, the stories in this selection are among Chekhov''s most poignant and lyrical. They include well-known pieces such as ''The Lady with the Little Dog'', as well as less familiar work like ''Gusev'', inspired by Chekhov''s travels in the Far East, and ''Rothschild''s Violin'', a haunting and darkly humorous tale about death and loss. ABOUT THE SERIES: For over 100 years Oxford World''s Classics has made available the widest range of literature from around the globe. Each affordable volume reflects Oxford''s commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, helpful notes to clarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for further study, and much more.

The Last Book Written by a Human - Jeff Burningham

In The Last Book Written by a Human, tech entrepreneur Jeff Burningham delivers a profound and urgent exploration of what it truly means to be human in the age of AI—challenging us to embrace wisdom, love, and deep human connection as we navigate an uncertain future alongside machines. What does it mean to be human? At a time when AI is rapidly changing the way we live, work, and think, this may be the biggest question we face. In The Last Book Written by a Human, tech entrepreneur and investor Jeff Burningham wrestles with the fundamental questions of existence, the future role of artificial intelligence in society, and the increasingly complex union between humanity and its creations. With raw honesty, Burningham shares his personal story from Mormon missionary and Bishop to successful entrepreneur to his gubernatorial run and beyond, offering reflections on our otherworldly potential and uncertain future in the age of AI. His call to action is clear: As machines become smarter, we must become wiser. You will discover: * How the rise of AI is forcing humanity to confront fundamental questions about consciousness, intelligence, and what it means to be truly human. * Why the development of AI must be guided by love, wisdom, and compassion. * How to navigate relationships in the future, ensuring we maintain genuine human connection alongside increasingly synthetic ones. * The importance of reforming institutions—religious, governmental, and business—to support human flourishing. * The cosmic necessity of mastering your life as a human being, rather than a human doing. This book is a wake-up call for our species to evolve beyond our unconscious patterns, false beliefs, and outdated systems in order to thrive in the age of AI.

Frederik Ruysch and His Thesaurus Anatomicus - Joanna Ebenstein

A lavishly illustrated guide to the magnum opus of the great seventeenth-century anatomist, master embalmer, artist, and collector of specimens.Frederik Ruysch (1638-1731) was a celebrated Dutch anatomist, master embalmer, and museologist. He is best remembered today for strange tableaux, crafted from fetal skeletons and other human remains, that flicker provocatively at the edges of science, art, and memento mori. Ruysch exhibited these pieces, along with hundreds of other artful specimens, in his home museum and catalogued them in his lavishly illustrated Thesaurus Anatomicus. This book offers the first English translation of Ruysch''s guide to his collection, along with all the illustrations from the original volume, photographs of some his most imaginative extant specimens, and more.Ruysch was at once a brilliant scientist, a preternaturally gifted technician, an esteemed physician, a religious moralizer, and an artist whose prime form of expression was the medium of human remains. His works were sometimes described as "Rembrandts of anatomical preparation"; today they seem so strange that we can hardly believe that they even existed, much less that they were so popular in their time. His combination of the religious and the scientific, the painstakingly accurate and the extravagantly fantastical, offers vivid testimony of an era in which science overlapped seamlessly with religion and art. Essays accompanying Ruysch''s text and images consider such topics as the historical context of Ruysch''s work, the paradox of an artist of death whose work engenders the illusion of life, the conservation of Ruysch''s specimens, and the shifting ascendancies of romanticism and rationality in the natural sciences.

If our relationship had not begun with this one tiny untruth.Time has flattened for Esther. Her storybook marriage begins, and ends, in the shadow of Notre Dame cathedral. Sifting through the ashes of their years together, a time now collapsed by grief, she finds a mismatched litany: mountain lions, a Paris bookshop, bad dancing, bad faith, marshland, prairieland, miscarriage, motherhood, bagels, Eve.In order to understand this new story, Esther seeks help - from generations of women, from a book about evolution, from a friendly philosopher/scientist with a solid grasp of the space-time continuum.Mostly, though, she writes - fragments, notes, letters - tracing a fine line between a story that soothes and one that suffocates; confronting the impossibility of communicating anything in the right way, at the right moment, to her daughter. Esther writes, and rewrites, until time slowly takes shape again. This extraordinary debut is an excavation of betrayal, of motherhood, of time and timelessness, of guilt and consequence, of love coming to an end. Told with dry wit and a startling ferocity, And Notre Dame is Burning heralds an urgent new voice in literary fiction.

Frogs and Other Plays - Aristophanes

Marrying deft social commentary to a rich, earthy comedy, the three comedies collected in Aristophanes'' The Frogs and Other Plays offers a unique insight into one of the most turbulent periods in Ancient Greek history. This Penguin Classics edition is translated by David Barrett with revisions, an introduction and notes by Shomit Dutta. The master of ancient Greek comic drama, Aristophanes combined slapstick, humour and cheerful vulgarity with acute political observations. In The Frogs, written during the Peloponnesian War, Dionysus descends to the Underworld to bring back a poet who can help Athens in its darkest hour, and stages a great debate to help him decide between the traditional wisdom of Aeschylus and the brilliant modernity of Euripides. The clash of generations and values is also the object of Aristophanes'' satire in Wasps, in which an old-fashioned father and his loose-living son come to blows and end up in court. And in Women at the Thesmophoria, the famous Greek tragedian Euripides, accused of misogyny, persuades a relative to infiltrate an all-women festival to find out whether revenge is being plotted against him.Shomit Dutta''s introduction discusses Aristophanes'' life, the cultural context of his work and conventions of Greek comedy. This updated version of David Barrett''s translation also includes extensive notes and a preface for each play.Aristophanes (c.445-386 BC) was probably born in Athens. Little is known about his life, but there is a portrait of him in Plato''s Symposium. He was twice threatened with prosecution for his outspoken attacks on the prominent politician Cleon, but in 405 he was publicly honoured and crowned for promoting Athenian civic unity in The Frogs. Aristophanes had his first comedy produced when he was about twenty-one, and wrote forty plays in all. The eleven surviving plays of Aristophanes are published in the Penguin Classics series as The Birds and Other Plays, Lysistrata and Other Plays, The Wasps and Other Plays and The Frogs and Other Plays. If you enjoyed The Frogs and Other Plays, you might like Aristophanes'' Lysistrata and Other Plays, also available in Penguin Classics.

Human Errors - Nathan Lents

We like to think of ourselves as highly evolved. But if we are evolution''s greatest creation, why are we so badly designed? We have retinas that face backward, we must find vitamins and nutrients in our diets that other animals simply make for themselves and millions of us can''t reproduce successfully without help from modern science. And that''s just the beginning of the story. Biologist Nathan H. Lents takes us on an entertaining and illuminating tour of our four-billion-year-long evolutionary saga, and shows us how each of our flaws tells us a story about our species'' history.

Human Machine Collaboration and Interaction for Smart Manufacturing

Advanced technologies such as robotics, 5G mobile communications, IoT, cloud computing and wireless sensor networks have had a huge impact and influence on manufacturing, with an increased collaboration between humans and smart systems. As the manufacturing process becomes more automated using real-time data, communication systems, Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques and robotics feed data back into the manufacturing process. This enables the design of products that are more customized and personal, and leads to a more competitive, efficient and value-added production process by reacting more quickly to technical or human errors to avoid product and system damage while increasing workplace safety, and reducing waste, pollution, and associated costs. This edited book covers challenges, concepts, systems, architectures, technologies, and design characteristics of human-machine cooperation and interaction systems in smart manufacturing environments using state of the art technologies including AI, 5G, IoTs, Blockchains, CPS, sensing, automation and robotics. The book is aimed at researchers and engineers working on the applications of robotics and automation, HMI, HCI, CPS, sensing, information and communications technology, data science, ML/DL/AI, AR/VR, cybersecurity and electronics. It is also a useful reference for advanced students and lecturers in these fields, and will appeal to manufacturers and automation system developers.

Hedda Gabler and Other Plays - Henrik Ibsen

Four of Ibsen's most important plays in superb modern translations, part of the new Penguin Ibsen series. In these four unforgettably intense plays, Henrik Ibsen explores the complex nature of truth, the tension between freedom and responsibility, and the terrible pull that the past exerts over the present. In The Wild Duck, an idealist destroys a family by exposing the lie behind his friend's marriage. In Rosmersholm, a respectable man is driven to extremes by guilt over his wife's death, while in The Lady from the Sea a woman is caught between her family and the enticement of the wild sea. And in Hedda Gabler, one of Ibsen's most famous and vivid anti-heroines struggles to break free from the conventional life she has created for herself, with tragic results. The new Penguin series of Ibsen's major plays offer the best available editions in English, under the general editorship of Tore Rem. The plays have been freshly translated by the best modern translators and are based on the recently published, definitive Norwegian edition of Ibsen's works. They all include new introductions and editorial apparatus by leading scholars.
