He argues that a populist, Robespierriste tendency, sharply at odds with democratic values and freedom of expression, gained an ideological advantage in France, and that the negative reaction this generally provoked caused a more general anti-Enlightenment reaction, a surging anti-intellectualism combined with forms of religious revival that largely undermined the longings of the deprived, underprivileged, and disadvantaged, and ended by helping, albeit often unwittingly, conservative anti-Enlightenment ideologies to dominate the scene. The Enlightenment that Failed relates both the American and the French revolutions to the Enlightenment in a markedly different fashion from how this is usually done, showing how both great revolutions were fundamentally split between bitterly opposed and utterly incompatible ideological tendencies. Radical Enlightenment, which had been an effective ideological challenge to the prevailing monarchical-aristocratic status quo, was weakened, then almost entirely derailed and displaced from the Western consciousness, in the 1830s and 1840s by the rise of Marxism and other forms of socialism.

Few people had a career that spanned two world wars and which involved some of the most dramatic and dangerous moments of the 20th century. Group Captain Frederick Winterbotham CBE, however, was one of them. Following the outbreak of war in the summer of 1914, a young Frederick, then still just 17 years old and only freshly back from a trip around the world, enlisted in the ranks of the Royal Gloucestershire Hussars Yeomanry. Soon, though, Winterbotham’s thoughts turned in a new direction – and a transfer to the Royal Flying Corps followed. Having gained his pilot’s ‘Wings’, Winterbotham was posted to 29 Squadron, then on the Western Front in France, in April 1917. Early in 1930, Winterbotham rejoined the Air Staff with the official duties of a liaison officer; unofficially he was to operate an Air Department in Britain’s Secret Service. It was in this role that, in the 1930s, he made a number of visits to Germany where he undertook a valuable intelligence and high-level espionage role among many of the top Nazis – meetings that he reveals here in dramatic detail. These encounters included Hitler himself. During the war Winterbotham was based at Bletchley Park and reported directly to the head of MI6, Sir Hugh Sinclair, as well as his successor, Sir Stewart Menzies. He was subsequently appointed as the organisation’s deputy and tasked with safeguarding the distribution and use of top secret intelligence throughout the Allied forces, which included the Enigma and Ultra transcripts. So important was this work, that Winterbotham would often report information they contained directly, and personally, to Winston Churchill. Winterbotham remained an unsung war hero, because the cracking of Enigma was considered so secret it was not revealed for some thirty years after the war, when he published his best-selling book The Ultra Secret. This autobiography is the story of one man’s remarkable service to his nation through two world wars.

I když původní myšlenky pocházejí od Fredericka Perlse, kniha je výsledkem tvořivé spolupráce tří autorů (Paula Goodmana, který materiál dílu rozvinul a přepracoval, a Ralpha Hefferline, jenž vše aplikoval v praxi). Tato publikace se zcela právem řadí mezi "klasická" díla o psychoterapii vůbec. Podává základní výklad pro nový psychoterapeutický přístup, rozhodně ale není "lehkým" čtením. Nelze ji číst jedním dechem, jak je tomu u mnoha populárních psychologických knížek. Zejména pro čtenáře, který se zatím neorientuje v základní teorii gestalt terapie, může být zpočátku těžkým soustem. Je to však základní práce pro seriózního studenta, který je připraven číst a studovat ji znovu, zažívat ji pomalu a trpělivě. Kniha poprvé vyšla před více než půlstoletím a o jejím vlivu na další generace psychologů a psychoterapeutů svědčí i její pravidelné reedice a překlady do všech světových jazyků.

This relatively short story is incredibly touching, and you will remember it for a long time. The atmosphere builds up thanks to well-chosen voices, music, and graphics.

Kniha je souborem přepisů tří workshopů, které se odehrály ve slavném Esalenském institutu v roce 1968. V nich Perls živě demonstruje, co je gestalt: celek lidského prožívání, do něhož se v rámci terapie snažíme opět zahrnout všechny myšlenky, vjemy a emoce, které jsme od sebe dříve oddělili. První část knihy obsahuje čtyři přednášky, v nichž Perls jasně a jednoduše vysvětluje základní myšlenky, které podle něj tvoří filozofii a metodologii gestalt terapie. Následují záznamy semináře na téma snů. Hlavním Perlsovým záměrem zde není sen analyzovat, ale znovu prožít. Poslední část zaznamenává několik po sobě následujících individuálních sezení s jednou osobou a také skupinové setkání. Zde se Perls snaží zachytit další aspekty gestalt terapie, které z předchozích částí nejsou tak patrné. Kniha je základním svědectvím o tom, jak gestalt terapii praktikoval její zakladatel. Frederick S. Perls (1893–1970) byl americký psychoterapeut německo-židovského původu. Původně byl ovlivněn Freudem, ale později se od analýzy odklonil směrem k důrazu na prožívání a se svou ženou Laurou vytvořil koncept gestalt terapie. Ta je založena na poznávání a vyjadřování vlastních prožitků „tady a teď“ a na živý kontakt s okolím a druhými lidmi. Kvůli svému židovskému původu Perls ve 30. letech 20. století odešel z Německa a zakotvil nejprve v Jižní Africe, později v USA a nakonec v Kanadě. Největšího vlivu dosáhl v rámci svého působení v kalifornském Esalenu.
