Takovými skupinami jsou podle autora např. narkotrafikanti ve Střední a Jižní Americe, mafiánská uskupení v Evropě, na Rusi a v Číně. Mezi nimi mají pak význačné postavení islamisté z Al-Kajdy či nověji Islámského státu, zejména z toho důvodu, že na rozdíl od ostatních disponují jednoduchým a velmi koherentním diskurzem, který provokuje širokou odezvu a má na mnohé lidi na Západě, kteří hledají "silné" hodnoty (za něž stojí za to obětovat vlastní život) a transcendentální smysl života, fascinující účinek. Pronikání tohoto diskursu je posilováno paradoxním efektem západního imperialismu: jestliže se Západ v dnešní době nachází v pozici imperiálního ústupu a zdaleka již nevládne světu zcela volně dle své vůle, i nadále se zejména ve vlastním sebevědomí tématizuje v termínech "jakoby tomu tak bylo" a tedy vše, co se ve světě děje, nahlíží jako nutný důsledek západní politiky. Je zkrátka neschopen připustit, že jisté události jsou výsledkem činnosti jiných aktérů, jednajících dle zcela jiných logik, které se vymykají západnímu pojmovému uchopení a zařazení do Západem narýsovaných dějin. Západ se pak cítí "vinen" za vše, co se přihází: např. násilné revoluce a převraty v arabském světě musí (podle teorií třetího světa, které se rozvinuly v 50. a 60. letech) nutně být důsledkem někdejší koloniální politiky Západu v této oblasti. Zároveň přetrvává epistémická pýcha Západu: západní komentátoři jsou stále ještě přesvědčení, že vědí lépe, co se děje v hlavě Arabů, než Arabové sami a neberou je vážně. Přesvědčivost a schopnost fascinace islamistického diskurzu vyplývá z toho, že jde o jediný monoteismus, který předpisuje povinnost války v rámci náboženské praxe a je jediným proudem, který je schopen formulovat svoji ideologii ve vlastních termínech a z vlastních zdrojů, nezávisle na Západem psané historii. Je schopen rozvinout, nezávislou vizi světa a dějin. Daří se mu dokonce infiltrovat své termíny do diskursu svého protivníka a tím jej mást. Posun je přitom postupný a na Západě se mu nevěnuje dostatečná pozornost: ještě v případě Iránu a uchopení moci Chomejním se mluvilo o "revoluci", jejímž plodem byla "islámská republika", používaly se tedy termíny ze západního arsenálu porozumění historii. V případě Islámského státu se mluví o "chalifátu" a "džihádu", přebírají se tedy již termíny původem z islámské civilizace, jejichž obsah a dosah západním komentátorům uniká, zatímco je naprosto zřejmý pro každého muslima.
