Edward III comes to life in a new version by playwright Octavio Solis. Written after Englandâ ™s victory over the Spanish Armada in 1588, Edward III follows the exploits of King Edward III and his son Edward, the Black Prince of Wales. England dominates on the battlefield as the play explores questions of kinghood and chivalry through the actions of King Edward and his son. Richard III - William Shakespeare
Written in the early 1590s, Shakespeare s version of the story of Richard III, more properly known as The Tragedy of Richard the Third, depicts events that happened more than a century before. The story is based on the unfinished History of Richard III by Sir Thomas More, writing as the Tudor dynasty was seeking to consolidate its position. Shakespeare portrays his usurping, hunchbacked Richard as truly villainous, with few redeeming features. Yet as he strives to consolidate power, he is a compelling and charismatic character, delivering some of Shakespeare s most memorable lines. As well as the play itself, this edition contains: • An extended introduction that looks at the play s history, its structure, and characters• A glossary of words and terms• Notes on the text • A timeline of William Shakespeare s life and work

Richard III - William Shakespeare
Richard III is one of the finest of Shakespeareâ ™s historical dramas. Although it has a huge cast, Richard himself, gleefully wicked, charismatically Machiavellian, always dominates the play: a role to gratify such leading actors as David Garrick, Laurence Olivier, Anthony Sher, Ian McKellen and Al Pacino. Since, in real life, political Machiavellianism is never out of date, Richard III remains perennially topical. Numerous revivals on stage and screen have demonstrated the enduring cogency of this drama about the lethally corrupting quest for power.Richard III is the twenty-first play in the Wordsworth Classicsâ ™ Shakespeare Series. The Times Literary Supplement says: â ˜Many students and ordinary readers will be grateful to Watts and his publishers for making such useful editions available at such low cost.â ™

Distinguished editor T.W. Craik makes an independent and balanced examination of the many textual problems of Henry V, providing many new emendations. Craik s commentary is particularly ample and detailed, with careful attention to the play s language, textual problems, the interpretation of stage directions, and Shakespeare s handling of source materials... he builds up a distinct though traditionalist reading which, critically sympathetic and undogmatic, finds the play at once simple and subtle. John Jowett, Shakespeare Institute, Stratford-upon-Avon, Shakespeare Survey, 1997 With the exceptionally thorough Arden notes, and the extensive editorial coverage, including recent stage history, this Henry V is the one to have. Times Higher Education Supplement Craik s commentary is exemplary in its thorough treatment of critical concerns, glossaries and explanations, theatrical matters, and source material. King John - William Shakespeare
King John - today remembered as the villainous opponent of Robin Hood and the Magna Carta - was for Shakespeare and his audience a heroic figure who stood up to England s enemies. This Penguin Shakespeare edition is edited by R. L. Smallwood with an introduction by Eugene Giddens. This England never did, nor never shall,Lie at the proud foot of a conqueror Under the rule of King John, England is forced into war when the French challenge the legitimacy of John s claim to the throne and determine to install his nephew Arthur in his place. But political principles, hypocritically flaunted, are soon forgotten, as the French and English kings form an alliance based on cynical self-interest. And as the desire to cling to power dominates England s paranoid and weak-willed king, his country is threatened with disaster. This book contains a general introduction to Shakespeare s life and Elizabethan theatre, a separate introduction to Richard II, a chronology, suggestions for further reading, an essay discussing performance options on both stage and screen, and a commentary. William Shakespeare (1564-1616) was born to John Shakespeare and Mary Arden in late April 1564 in Stratford-upon-Avon. He wrote about 38 plays (the precise number is uncertain), many of which are regarded as the most exceptional works of drama ever produced, including Romeo and Juliet (1595), Henry V (1599), Hamlet (1601), Othello (1604), King Lear (1606) and Macbeth (1606), as well as a collection of 154 sonnets, which are among the most profound and influential love poetry in English.

King Henry VIII; or All is True - William Shakespeare
Men s evil manners live in brass, their virtuesWe write in water. Henry VIII or All is True is Shakespeare s retelling of one of the defining periods in English history: the marriage and divorce of Henry VIII and Katherine of Aragon. Written in the wake of the sudden death of Henry Stuart, King James I and VI s oldest son and heir, Shakespeare s most contemporary history play offers provocative parallels between the Tudor past and Stuart present. The play examines the rise and fall of Cardinal Wolsey, Thomas Cranmer, and Anne Boleyn, providing both a meditation on history as a narrative dictated by Church and State, and on the tragic lives of those who become collateral damage to greater forces. The New Oxford Shakespeare offers authoritative editions of Shakespeare s works with introductory materials designed to encourage new interpretations of the plays and poems. King Henry VI Part 3 - William Shakespeare
In their lively and engaging edition of this sometimes neglected early play, Cox and Rasmussen make a strong claim for it as a remarkable work, revealing a confidence and sureness that very few earlier plays can rival. They show how the young Shakespeare, working closely from his chronicle sources, nevertheless freely shaped his complex material to make it both theatrically effective and poetically innovative. The resulting work creates, in Queen Margaret, one of Shakespeare s strongest female roles and is the source of the popular view of Richard Neville, Earl of Warwick as `kingmaker . Focusing on the history of the play both in terms of both performance and criticism, the editors open it to a wide and challenging variety of interpretative and editorial paradigms.

The Tempest - William Shakespeare
The Wordsworth Classics Shakespeare s Series presents a newly-edited sequence of William Shakespeare s works. The textual editing takes account of recent scholarship while giving the material a careful reappraisal. The Tempest is the most lyrical, profound and fascinating of Shakespeare s late comedies. Prospero, long exiled from Italy with his daughter Miranda, seeks to use his magical powers to defeat his former enemies. Eventually, having proved merciful, he divests himself of that magic, his `art , and prepares to return to the mainland. The Tempest has often been regarded as Shakespeare s `farewell to the stage before his retirement. In the past, critics emphasised the romantically beautiful features of The Tempest, seeing it as an imaginative fantasia. In recent decades, however, The Tempest has also been treated as a potently political drama which offers controversial insights into colonialism and racism. Frequently staged and diversely filmed, the play has influenced numerous poets and novelists.

Othello - William Shakespeare
Edited, Introduced and Annotated by Cedric Watts, M.A., Ph.D., Emeritus Professor of English, University of Sussex. The Wordsworth Classics Shakespeare Series, with Henry V and The Merchant of Venice as its inaugral volumes, presents a newly-edited sequence of William Shakespeare s works. The textual editing takes account of recent scholarship while giving the material a careful reappraisal.Othello has long been recognised as one of the most powerful of Shakespeareâ ™s tragedies. This is an intense drama of love, deception, jealousy and destruction. Desdemonaâ ™s love for Othello, the Moor, transcends racial prejudice; but the envious Iago conspires to devastate their lives. In its vivid rendering of racism, sexism, contested identities, and the savagery lurking within civilisation, Othello is arguably the most topical and accessible tragedy from Shakespeareâ ™s major phase as a dramatist. Productions on stage and screen regularly renew its power to engross, impress and trouble the imagination.

Henry V - William Shakespeare
Edited, introduced and annotated by Cedric Watts, M.A., Ph.D., Emeritus Professor of English, University of Sussex. The Wordsworth Classics Shakespeare Series, with Henry V as its inaugral volume, presents a newly-edited sequence of William Shakespeare s works. The textual editing endeavours to take account of recent scholarship while giving the material a careful reappraisal.Henry V is the most famous and influential of Shakespeare s history plays. Its powerful patriotic rhetoric has resounded down the ages, gaining eloquent expression in Laurence Olivier s renowned film. Henry himself, astute and charismatic, who led his â ˜band of brothersâ ™ to victory in the Battle of Agincourt, could indeed seem to be â ˜this star of Englandâ ™. In recent decades the play has attracted increasing critical attention and is now highly controversial. Kenneth Branagh s film-production reflected the changing valuation. Does this play have a sceptical sub-text which subverts its patriotism? Is Henry s achievement beset by irony? Has current scepticism distorted a predominantly and proudly nationalistic drama? Henry V demonstrates Shakespeare s acclaimed ability to bring new complexity to the material that he adapted, so that different eras may find within his work the familiar and the strange, the congenial and the harsh, the sustaining and the challenging.

One of the earliest of Shakespeare s plays, The Comedy of Errors is a brief and genuinely farcical comedy, filled with knockabout humour, and the havoc wrought by mistaken identity. The play tells the story of two sets of identical twins, accidentally separated at birth. Antipholus and his servant, Dromio, both of Syracuse, arrive in Ephesus, where they encounter their twin brothers, Antipholus and his servant, Dromio, of Ephesus. When the Syracusan strangers meet the friends and families of their twins, they are subject to unjust beatings, a near-seduction, and arrest, as well as accusations of infidelity, theft, madness, and possession by demons. As well as the play itself, this edition contains:• An extended introduction that looks at the play s history, its structure, and characters • A glossary of words and terms• Notes on the text • A timeline of William Shakespeare s life and workABOUT THE SERIES: The Arcturus Shakespeare Editions series brings together many of Shakespeare s celebrated plays and poetry, presented with striking contemporary cover designs. The Poems and Sonnets of William Shakespeare - William Shakespeare
With an Introduction by Tim Cook.Shakespeare s sonnets have an intensity of both feeling and meaning unmatched in English sonnet form. They divide into two parts; the first 126 sonnets are addressed to a fair youth for whom the poet has an obsessive love and the second chronicles his love for the notorious Dark Lady .In addition to the sonnets, this volume includes Shakespeare s two lengthy narrative poems on classical themes, The Rape of Lucrece which looks forward to the dark imagery of Macbeth, and Venus and Adonis which mixes ribaldry and tragedy in unique Shakespearean manner. The Phoenix and the Turtle is a beautiful metaphysical and allegorical short elegy, and takes its place with Shakespeare s better-known poetry.

The textual editing takes account of recent scholarship while giving the material a careful reappraisal. The Merchant of Venice is one of Shakespeareâ ™s most popular comedies, but it remains deeply controversial. The text may seem anti-Semitic; yet repeatedly, in performance, it has revealed a contrasting nature.Shylock, though vanquished in the law-court, often triumphs in the theatre. In his intensity he can dominatethe play, challenging abrasively its romantic and lyrical affirmations. What results is a bitter-sweet drama.Though The Merchant of Venice offers some of the traditional pleasures of romantic comedy, it also exposesthe operations of prejudice. Thus Shakespeare remains our contemporary.
