Josef Koudelka began his career as an aeronautical engineer, turning full-time to photography in the late 1960s. In 1968, Koudelka photographed the Soviet invasion of Prague, publishing his photographs under the initials P. P. (Prague Photographer). In 1969, he was anonymously awarded the Overseas Press Club’s Robert Capa Gold Medal for the photographs. Significant exhibitions of his work have been held at The Museum of Modern Art and the International Center of Photography, New York; Hayward Gallery, London; Stedelijk Museum of Modern Art, Amsterdam; and Palais de Tokyo, Paris. Robert Delpire has organized exhibitions of photography around the world, and he founded the Centre National de la Photographie, Paris, with Jack Lang, and was its director until 1996. In 2002, he established the Henri Cartier-Bresson Foundation.

Koudelka obdržel za své dílo četná světová ocenění, důležité výstavy jeho fotografického díla se konaly v New Yorku, Londýně, Amsterdamu a Paříži. Autorem doprovodného textu knihy je britský sociolog Will Guy. Sleduje v něm migraci Romů z jejich původní vlasti v severní Indii až k jejich současnému postavení ve světě.

Pořídil je v letech 1991 až 2017 na více než dvou stovkách archeologických míst v oblasti Středozemí. Kniha vyšla u příležitosti stejnojmenné výstavy konané v Uměleckoprůmyslovém museu v Praze. Josef Koudelka vždy fotografoval svět, jenž mizí a je potřeba si jej připomínat, ať už šlo o životní styl Romů, vpád vojsk Varšavské smlouvy do Československa, náboženské slavnosti či krajiny poznamenané lidskou činností. Ve svém souboru fotografií ruin zachycuje dříve reprezentativní stavby řecko-římského světa, dnes proměněné pouze v pozůstatky své bývalé slávy. Přežily zkázu času, a proto mají sílu, kterou se Josef Koudelka snažil převést do obrazu a zpřítomnit. Jak k tomu podotýká sám autor: Ruiny nejsou minulost, ale budoucnost. Během sedmi dnů srpna 1968 pořídil tehdy třicetiletý Josef Koudelka jedinečnou sérii fotografií zachycujících invazi vojsk Varšavské smlouvy do Československa, kterou se později podařilo tajně vyvézt ze země. Jeho fotografie byly agenturou Magnum Photos zveřejněny k prvnímu výročí invaze roku 1969 v mnoha mezinárodních časopisech, aniž bylo uvedeno autorovo jméno. Až v roce 1984, po smrti svého otce a v době, kdy hrozba represí pro jeho rodinu pominula, poprvé veřejně přiznal své autorství těchto snímků. Josef Koudelka, který dnes patří k nejvýznamnějším světovým fotografům, po čtyřiceti letech prošel svůj archiv a vybral pro tuto knihu 249 fotografií, z nichž většina nebyla nikdy publikována. Kniha obsahuje též texty oficiálních prohlášení, dobová svědectví a text objasňující historické události srpna 1968.

České sociální vědy prošly, podobně jako jiné vědní obory, třemi exilovými vlnami - po okupaci Československa v roce 1939, po nástupu komunistického režimu v roce 1948 a po ustavení tzv. normalizace jako důsledku vojenské intervence do obrodného procesu v roce 1968. V knize jsou zastoupeny jen dvě exilové vlny - poúnorová a normalizační . Kniha ukazuje na základě osobních rozhovorů, případně publikovaných interview, jak se nucení běženci vyrovnávali s novým prostředím, jak byli přijati a jak postupně dosahovali akademických, případně expertizních pozic na univerzitách a dalších pracovištích. Publikace je založena především na dvou základních stavebních kamenech - na vlastních výpovědích českých exilových sociálních vědců (nejen sociologů, ale i některých historiků a politologů), které reprodukují poměrně věrně dobové ovzduší, a na ukázkách z jejich děl, jak z dob předexilových, tak z dob strávených v zahraničí. Publikace snad vhodně doplňuje dosud vydané knihy o českém exilu, protože speciální pozornost sociálním vědám zatím věnována nebyla. V tomto ohledu chce být kniha prvním vykročením na cestě k úplnějšímu poznání vývoje české sociologie, z níž exil nelze vyloučit. Vychází mimo ediční řady.
