Člověk, který ho měl převést přes litevskou hranici, byl provokatér ve službách KGB. Po půlročním vězení v Grodně byl jedenadvacetiletý Herling-Grudziński odsouzen k pětiletému pobytu v táboře nucených prací a odeslán do lágru v Jercevu, jenž byl součástí kargopolských táborů, táhnoucích se podél železnice z Vologdy do Archangelska. V jercevském gulagu strávil půldruhého roku a byl odtamtud jakožto polský občan propuštěn po dramatické protestní hladovce 20. ledna 1942. Tehdy už Sovětský svaz napadený fašistickým Německem revidoval svůj vztah vůči Polsku a umožňoval budování polských jednotek k boji proti Hitlerovi. Herling-Grudziński vstoupil do polského vojenského sboru formujícího se v jižním Kazachstánu a v jeho řadách se zúčastnil bojů v Itálii. Po skončení války pak sepsal své otřesné vzpomínky na gulag a spojil je v knize Jiný svět, která vyšla nejprve anglicky v roce 1951. a brzy byla přeložena do mnoha jazyků (pouze francouzské vydání vyšlo vinou protestů komunistů teprve v roce 1985) a po roce 1991 se dočkala vydání též v postkomunistických státech. Jiný svět je však nejen důležitým dokumentem, jehož memento dodnes neztratilo svůj význam a platnost, ale také živým literárním dílem, jak zdůrazňoval ve své předmluvě k prvnímu vydání již Bertrand Russell a po něm pak i řada recenzentů. Je zkrátka knihou stejně čtivou a zajímavou, jako potřebnou.

The Braniff household includes their two biological daughters, Kennedy, 12, and Shelby 10; Rosie, 7, who was adopted from China with Down syndrome; Noah, 7, adopted from Congo; Jonah 5, adopted domestically; and finally, Ivy and Amelia, their one year old twins who were adopted as embryos, and implanted in Angela, who gave birth to them. In fact, after the book was finished, they joyfully welcomed a new baby into their home, Benjamin, through adoption, making them now a family of ten!Love Without Borders shares Angela''s relatable, humorous, and honest view of motherhood. Angela chronicles her journey to discover God’s purpose for her life. For years she walked the safe, expected path, until one day she could feel God calling her to boldly step out and follow him into new places, which led her to raise a large, non-traditional family that looked different than she ever imagined.
