The campaign for Iwo Jima (Operation Detachment) from 19 February–26 March 1945 pitted the USMC Fifth Amphibious Corps (VAC) and the USN’s Fifth Fleet against the IJA 109th Division and assorted IJN ground troops under the command of Lieutenant General Tadamichi Kuribayashi. Na ostrově se vylodil generálplukovník Holland Smith se 4. a 5. námořní divizí. 23. února dosáhli vrcholu hory Suribači. Vztyčování americké vlajky vojáky námořní pěchoty na vrcholu dobyté hory se stalo nejslavnější fotografií druhé světové války. Cílem operace, nazvané Iceberg, bylo dobýt ostrov Okinawa. Ostrov, vzdálený jen 500 km od Tokia, má stejně jako IWO JIMA dvě letecké základny a stal se tak odrazovým můstkem pro budoucí invazi Japonska. Piloti kamikadze, kulometná hnízda a spojovací chodby, učinily z invaze spojeneckých vojsk opravdové peklo. Japonci přišli o Yamato, největší bitevní loď na světě, která se nacházela na sebevražedné misi. 22. června 1945 přestali Japonci na ostrově klást jakýkoliv odpor, generálplukovník Ušijima, který velel posádce, spáchal sebevraždu. Začíná rozsáhlé bombardování Japonska. 28. července premiér Suzuki oznamuje, že neuznává Postupimskou dohodu. 6. srpna byla z amerického bombardéru B-29 Enola Gay svržena první atomová bomba na Hirošimu ... Tím byly ušetřeny životy statisíců amerických a spojeneckých vojáků a pravděpodobně i více jak milionu Japonců, které by si invaze vyžádala. A letouny B-29 s těmito bombami, startovaly právě z letiště na Iwo Jimě. Fotografie vztyčení americké vlajky na hoře Suribači na Iwo Jimě se stala nejslavnější fotografií druhé světové války.
