Podáva svedectvo nielen o Montaigneovi a jeho dobe, ale aj o Zweigovi. Biografia Montaigne vznikla šťastnou náhodou. Stefan Zweig utiekol s nacistami okupovanej Európy do Brazílie, kde sa usadil v meste Petrópolis. Práve tu objavil Montaigneove dvojzväzkové Eseje, ktoré vnímal ako útechu vo svojom postavení vyhnanca. Montaigneov životopis písal s veľkým zaujatím, videl paralelu medzi nacistickou brutalitou a náboženskými vojnami v časoch Montaigneových. Za štyristo rokov sa ľudstvo nezmenilo. Stefan Zweig vzdáva úctu Michelovi de Montaigne, človeku a humanistovi, ktorý nikdy nezradil svoje vnútorné presvedčenie a aj v najťažších časoch zostal homme libre, slobodným človekom.
