Montaigneov životopis písal s veľkým zaujatím, videl paralelu medzi nacistickou brutalitou a náboženskými vojnami v časoch Montaigneových. Za štyristo rokov sa ľudstvo nezmenilo. Stefan Zweig vzdáva úctu Michelovi de Montaigne, človeku a humanistovi, ktorý nikdy nezradil svoje vnútorné presvedčenie a aj v najťažších časoch zostal homme libre, slobodným človekom.
