Research Methodologies and Ethical Challenges in Digital Migration Studies
This Open Access book investigates the methodological and ethical dilemmas involved when working with digital technologies and large-scale datasets in relation to ethnographic studies of digital migration practices and trajectories. Digital technologies reshape not only every phase of the migration process itself (by providing new ways to access, to share and preserve relevant information) but also the activities of other actors, from solidarity networks to border control agencies. In doing so, digital technologies create a whole new set of ethical and methodological challenges for migration studies: from data access to data interpretation, privacy protection, and research ethics more generally. Of specific concern are the aspects of digital migration researchers accessing digital platforms used by migrants, who are subject to precarious and insecure life circumstances, lack recognised papers and are in danger of being rejected and deported. Thus, the authors call for new modes of caring for (big) data when researching migrants’ digital practices in the configuration of migration and borders. Besides taking proper care of research participants’ privacy, autonomy, and security, this also spans carefully establishing analytically sustainable environments for the respective data sets. In doing so, the book argues that it is essential to carefully reflect on researchers’ own ... Unknown localization key: "more"

Understanding Research in Early Education - Margaret M. Clark
In this newly revised edition of Understanding Research in Early Education, Margaret Clark demonstrates the continuing relevance of research in the homes of young children and in preschool units. Through rigorous yet understandable language, the text stresses the importance of research, acknowledging how easy it can be, amidst the change and flood of documents on early education and care, to overlook the insights to be gained from past research. The author draws on her own studies, and those of others, to illustrate how to avoid common pitfalls, ask the right questions to inform studentsÂ’ research projects, and critically apply findings in the classroom or nursery. The book is one of the few texts for students to bring research alive, analysing key research to consider its limitations and the extent to which results are relevant to policy and practice. Without requiring any prior expertise in research and research methodologies, the third edition will prove invaluable for undergraduate and postgraduate students taking courses in early yearsÂ’ education, and practitioners undertaking continuing professional development. New content includes: fully revised chapters, an updated reference list, and a new chapter discussing current research on baseline assessment.

Care-Based Methodologies
Care-Based Methodologies reimagines relationships between researchers and youth participants in school-based research. The book calls attention to care-based methodologies as essential to qualitative and ethnographic research in schools, particularly when participants are youth from nondominant communities. While researchers come to schools seeking to understand youths’ lived experiences and become implicated in the quotidian rhythms of their lives, it is rare that they receive training on how to navigate the complex interpersonal dynamics and relationships that take shape during long-term school research. How can researchers ensure that they care for the wellbeing of youth, not just the stories and data collected from them? How do researchers maneuver the various roles they may come to play in youth’s lives over the course of, and beyond, a study with care? What happens when scholars transgress the traditional power dynamics of researcher-participant relationships to walk with youth in their research? This book illustrates the possibilities for conducting rigorous and responsible research that simultaneously improves our understanding of youth’s lives, cares for their wellbeing, and works toward dismantling the systems that oppress them. The editors of the volume offer an opening chapter that articulates how researchers can practice care-based methodologies with youth by centering transparency, ... Unknown localization key: "more"

The United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples is seen primarily as an international human rights instrument. However, the Declaration also encompasses cultural, social and economic rights. Taken in the context of international trade and investment, the UN Declaration is a valuable tool to support economic self-determination of Indigenous peoples. This volume explores the emergence of Indigenous peoples'' participation in international trade and investment, as well as how it is shaping legal instruments in environment and trade, intellectual property and traditional knowledge. One theme that is explored is agency. From amicus interventions at the World Trade Organization to developing a future precedent for a ''Trade and Indigenous Peoples Chapter'', Indigenous peoples are asserting their right to patriciate in decision-making. The authors, both Indigenous and non-Indigenous experts on trade and investment legal, provide needed ideas and recommendations for governments, academia and policy thinkers to achieve economic reconciliation.

Indigenous Inhumanities - Mark Minch-de Leon
Reclaiming power and prophecy through California Indian intellectual resurgence and anticolonial resistance  Mark Minch-de Leon explores the anticolonial dimensions of California Indian intellectual and cultural resurgence in the aftermath of apocalypse in this compelling reexamination of Indigenous art, literature, and theory. Centering on a reinterpretation of the Ghost Dance, a ceremony first practiced in the nineteenth century, as a collective demonstration of prophecy and resilience, Indigenous Inhumanities envisions an expanded poetics of resistance through a reconfigured relationship to death and the dead. By dismantling the colonial frameworks of inclusion, recognition, and representation that reinforce settler-state power, Minch-de Leon shows how storytelling can be reclaimed as both research and as a tool for decolonization.  Taking up critical issues that the state has used to discipline California Indian relations to ancestors, such as the politics of human remains repatriation and the discourse around California Indian genocide, Minch-de Leon centers Indigenous knowledge and social systems while challenging legal and political definitions of violence, power, and the human. Rich case studies showcase the evocative art of Frank Day, the poetry of Tommy Pico, and the writings of Deborah Miranda, highlighting how these creators advance Indigenous theory and disrupt settler categories.  By ... Recognizing Indigenous Languages - Nicholas Limerick
What follows when state institutions name historically oppressed languages as official? What happens when bilingual education activists gain the right to coordinate schooling from upper-level state offices? The intercultural bilingual school system in Ecuador has been one of the most prominent referents of Indigenous education in the Americas. Since its establishment in 1988, members of Ecuador''s pueblos and nationalities have coordinated a second national school system that includes the teaching of Indigenous languages. Based on more than two years of ethnographic research in Ecuador''s Ministry of Education, at international and national conferences, in workshops, in schools, and with families, Recognizing Indigenous Languages considers how state agents carry out linguistic and educational politics and policies in eras of greater inclusivity and multiculturalism. This book shows how institutional advances for bilingual education and Indigenous languages have been premised on affirming the equality-and the equivalency-of the linguistic and cultural practices of members of Indigenous pueblos and nationalities with other Ecuadorians. Major responsibilities like serving as national state agents, crafting a standardized variety of the Kichwa language family, translating legal documents to Kichwa, and teaching Indigenous languages in schools have provided vast authority, representation, and visibility for those languages and their speakers. Centuries of art celebrating a global panorama of Indigenous culturesContinuing the work of the acclaimed Afro-Atlantic Histories, this publication from the Museu de Arte de São Paulo (MASP) compiles the collective curatorship and research carried out by artists and scholars from various territories and Indigenous groups in Australia, North America, South America and Scandinavia. For the traveling exhibition, MASP, in collaboration with Kode Bergen Art Museum, invited guest curators from Indigenous nations including Inuit, Maori and Sámi. With over 150 artists included, the featured artworks range from the historical to the contemporary—from 17th-century colonial religious paintings to modern film and video installations—in order to trace the impact of European colonization on Indigenous visual culture. Despite its scope, the aim of Indigenous Histories is not to fully represent the vast and complex histories of each region, but rather to provide a cross section, fragment or sample of these histories in a concise but relevant selection in order to create juxtapositions of these groups on a global scale. Incorporating traditional patterns, this beautifully designed book is divided into eight thematic sections: seven regional and one covering contemporary Indigenous activism. Indigenous London - Coll Thrush
An imaginative retelling of London’s history, framed through the experiences of Indigenous travelers who came to the city over the course of more than five centuries  “Thrush has certainly offered a powerful corrective to the usual geographies imagined for Indigenous people in the past, as well as a new layer to the palimpsest history of Britain’s imperial capital.â€â€”Kate Fullagar, William and Mary Quarterly  London is famed both as the ancient center of a former empire and as a modern metropolis of bewildering complexity and diversity. In Indigenous London, historian Coll Thrush offers an imaginative vision of the city’s past crafted from an almost entirely new perspective: that of Indigenous children, women, and men who traveled there, willingly or otherwise, from territories that became Canada, New Zealand, Australia, and the United States, beginning in the sixteenth century. They included captives and diplomats, missionaries and shamans, poets and performers. Some, like the Powhatan noblewoman Pocahontas, are familiar; others, like an Odawa boy held as a prisoner of war, have almost been lost to history. Indigenous Language Education in Critical Times
This book builds a space in which a diversity of voices – Indigenous teachers, activists and committed academics – are foregrounded in the processes of Indigenous education with the goal of Indigenous language reclamation. It decenters state systems of education (e.g. schooling) and instead considers the efforts of teachers (defined broadly), community activists and scholars who are developing initiatives to support Indigenous language practices in, around and beyond schooling, thereby emphasizing diverse processes of language reclamation in complex and varied settings. The authors invite the reader to reconsider language reclamation in the face of climate change and neocolonial exploitation, offering a source of radical hope for the future. Central to the book are narratives regarding community-based collaborations, which subvert the asymmetrical power relations between academia and educational practitioners and activists, and call into question the categories constructed by a top-down approach, as well as the colonial relationships that linguistic anthropology and linguistics have constructed within the spaces and people they ‘study’.

Indigenous Audibilities follows the social relations that created these collections in four interconnected case studies linking the U.S., Mexico, Nicaragua, and Chile. Indigenous collections were embedded in political projects that negotiated issues of cultural diplomacy, national canons, and heritage. The case studies recuperate the traces of marginalized voices in archives, paying special attention to women and Indigenous people. Despite the dominant agendas of national and international institutions, the diverse actors and the multi-directional influences often led to unexpected outcomes. Author Amanda Minks brings together vivid storytelling and theories of collection, voice, and recording to challenge the transparency of archives as a historical source. The book presents a social-historical method of listening, reading, and thinking beyond the referentiality of archived texts, and in the process uncovers neglected genealogies of cultural music research in the Americas.

Indigenous Social Work around the World - John Coates
How can mainstream Western social work learn from and in turn help advance indigenous practice? This volume brings together prominent international scholars involved in both Western and indigenous social work across the globe - including James Midgley, Linda Briskman, Alean Al-Krenawi and John R. Graham - to discuss some of the most significant global trends and issues relating to indigenous and cross-cultural social work. The contributors identify ways in which indigenization is shaping professional social work practice and education, and examine how social work can better address diversity in international exchanges and cross-cultural issues within and between countries. Key theoretical, methodological and service issues and challenges in the indigenization of social work are reviewed, including the way in which adaptation can lead to more effective practices within indigenous communities and emerging economies, and how adaptation can provide greater insight into cross-cultural understanding and practice.

Indigene - Sefi Atta
Perceptive and satirical, Indigene highlights revealing moments in the everyday lives of four introspective professional Nigerian women who grapple with circumstances out of their control. In the novella, Indigene, a sequel to Atta''s debut novel, Everything Good Will Come, Enitan, a law partner in Lagos, takes stock of herself after she turns sixty. In the short stories that follow, ''Unsuitable Ties,'' ''Debt,'' and ''Housekeeping,'' Yemisi, a caterer attending a London dinner party as a guest, assesses the company she keeps; Grace, a consultant for a Big Four accounting firm, confronts her shopping habit in a New Jersey mall; and Abi, an ER physician staying in an Atlanta hotel, reflects on the peculiarities of working in the American South. Think Indigenous - Doug Good Feather, Doug Red Hail Pineda

Indigenous Psychologies
Indigenous psychologies are attempts to portray the concepts, and to present the evidence, about human behaviour and experience from a point of view within the cultural traditions of the group. It takes a position that distances itself from a uniform (usually Western) psychology, and explores human psychological variation in its own cultural contexts. Indigenous psychologies provide important alternatives to the existing unitary psychology, but in their very diversity we may discover variations and communalities that could provide the basic material to create a more truly pan-human psychology. Thus, diversity in psychological knowledge may allow for the eventual development of a more representative psychology that will likely be very different from current conceptions of human behaviour.

Researching Well-Being in an Indigenous Amazon Community - Ricardo Godoy
This book aims to provide the first comprehensive, multi-year, systematic, empirical assessment in the behavioral sciences of how well-being changes over time in a rural society of Indigenous People in the Global South.Using data compiled by the TsimaneÂ’ Amazonian Panel Study (2002-2010) which monitored change in TsimaneÂ’ communities, this book aims to analyse important social and economic outcomes in a farming and foraging society of native Amazonians in Bolivia. It uses multidisciplinary methods through real longitudinal research to bring together three themes: well-being, economic inequalities, and the fate of Indigenous People in small-scale rural societies of the Global South to ask the question ''Why is a society that faces material deprivations, considerable economic inequalities, and declining material standards of living so happy?''This book aims to provide a comprehensive approach to the measurement of well-being and how to track its changes, providing a platform for future generations to gauge long-term change. It will resonate with undergraduate and graduate students across the behavioural sciences, professional anthropologists who specialise in the Amazon and well-being, development economists, and senior researchers who are part of the wave of emerging interest of doing research in small-scale rural societies of the Global South.
