This collection of eleven evocative, accessible and funny stories for children of 5+ tells how a particular animal came to be as it is now. How the West Became Antisemitic - Ivan G. Marcus

An examination of how the Jews⠔real and imagined⠔so challenged the Christian majority in medieval Europe that it became a society that was religiously and culturally antisemitic in new ways In medieval Europe, Jews were not passive victims of the Christian community, as is often assumed, but rather were startlingly assertive, forming a Jewish civilization within Latin Christian society. Both Jews and Christians considered themselves to be God⠙s chosen people. These dueling claims fueled the rise of both cultures as they became rivals for supremacy. In How the West Became Antisemitic, Ivan Marcus shows how Christian and Jewish competition in medieval Europe laid the foundation for modern antisemitism. Marcus explains that Jews accepted Christians as misguided practitioners of their ancestral customs, but regarded Christianity as idolatry. Christians, on the other hand, looked at Jews themselves⠔not Judaism⠔as despised. They directed their hatred at a real and imagined Jew: theoretically subordinate, but sometimes assertive, an implacable ⠜enemy within.⠝ In their view, Jews were permanently and physically Jewish⠔impossible to convert to Christianity. Thus Christians came to hate Jews first for religious reasons, and eventually for racial ones. Even when Jews no longer lived among them, medieval Christians could not forget their former neighbors. Modern antisemitism, based on the imagined Jew as powerful and world dominating, is a transformation of this medieval hatred. A sweeping and well-documented history of the rivalry between Jewish and Christian civilizations during the making of Europe, How the West Became Antisemitic is an ambitious new interpretation of the medieval world and its impact on modernity.

How the World Became Rich - Jared Rubin, Mark Koyama

Most humans are significantly richer than their ancestors. Humanity gained nearly all of its wealth in the last two centuries. How did this come to pass? How did the world become rich? Mark Koyama and Jared Rubin dive into the many theories of why modern economic growth happened when and where it did. They discuss recently advanced theories rooted in geography, politics, culture, demography, and colonialism. Pieces of each of these theories help explain key events on the path to modern riches. Why did the Industrial Revolution begin in 18th-century Britain? Why did some European countries, the US, and Japan catch up in the 19th century? Why did it take until the late 20th and 21st centuries for other countries? Why have some still not caught up? Koyama and Rubin show that the past can provide a guide for how countries can escape poverty. There are certain prerequisites that all successful economies seem to have. But there is also no panacea. A societyâ ™s past and its institutions and culture play a key role in shaping how it may â “ or may not â “ develop. Also available as an audiobook.

The Notebook - Roland Allen

A New Yorker Book of the Year 2024A Ryan Holiday (Very) Best Book I Read in 2024 Excellent Ian Samson, TLS From plans for flying machines to philosophy - the remarkable joy of jotting things down Guardian Surprisingly revealing The Sunday TimesWe see notebooks everywhere we go. But where did this simple invention come from? How did they revolutionise our lives, and why are they such powerful tools for creativity? And how can using a notebook help you change the way you think? In this wide-ranging story, Roland Allen reveals all the answers. Ranging from the bustling markets of medieval Florence to the quiet studies of our greatest thinkers, he follows a trail of dazzling ideas, revealing how the notebook became our most dependable and versatile tool for creative thinking. He tells the notebook stories of artists like Leonardo and Frida Kahlo, scientists from Isaac Newton to Marie Curie, and writers from Chaucer to Henry James. We watch Darwin developing his theory of evolution in tiny pocketbooks, see Agatha Christie plotting a hundred murders in scrappy exercise books, and learn how Bruce Chatwin unwittingly inspired the creation of the Moleskine. The CIA - Hugh Wilford

Gripping history that also informs the present Sunday Times Fascinating . . .Wilford writes engagingly with a telling eye for colourful detail The Spectator A spectacular achievement . . .I loved it Dominic Sandbrook How the CIA became an instrument of a new covert empire both in America and overseas. In 1947, the United States created the CIA to analyse foreign intelligence, but within a few years the Agency was engaged in other operations - bolstering pro-American governments, overthrowing nationalist leaders, and surveilling domestic dissent - before transforming during the Cold War. Drawing on decades of research, celebrated intelligence historian Hugh Wilford shows how the Agency created a new Western empire, as successive US presidents used the covert powers of the Agency to hide overseas interventions from postcolonial foreigners and anti-imperial Americans alike.Even the CIA s post-9/11 global hunt for terrorists was haunted by the ghosts of empires past. Original, and gripping, The CIA tells how America adopted unaccountable power and created a new imperial order.

Crossing the Line of Duty - Neil Root

The Metropolitan Police of the mid-twentieth century, in particular The Flying Squad and Obscene Publications Squad, has been described as â ˜the most routinely corrupt organisation in Londonâ ™. Larger-than-life characters such as Ken Drury and Alfred â ˜Wicked Billâ ™ Moody routinely fraternised with underworld figures, paid off witnesses and struck dodgy deals to get their man â “ regardless of whether he was innocent or guilty. And the problem went far beyond a couple of â ˜bentâ ™ coppers: in the end, fifty officers were prosecuted, while 478 took early retirement. Using Metropolitan Police files obtained under Freedom of Information, which have not been accessed since the 1970s, author Neil Root can finally tell the real story of how the Met became systemically corrupt, and how Sir Robert Mark, who became commissioner of the Metropolitan Police in 1972, finally cleaned it up.

The Map of Knowledge - Violet Moller

Violet Moller brings to life the ways in which knowledge reached us from antiquity to the present day in a book that is as delightful as it is readable. â “ Peter Frankopan, author of The Silk RoadsIn The Map of Knowledge Violet Moller traces the journey taken by the ideas of three of the greatest scientists of antiquity â “ Euclid, Galen and Ptolemy â “ through seven cities and over a thousand years. In it, we follow them from sixth-century Alexandria to ninth-century Baghdad. From Muslim Cordoba to Catholic Toledo. From Salernoâ ™s medieval medical school to Palermo, capital of Sicilyâ ™s vibrant mix of cultures. And â “ finally â “ to Venice, where that great merchant cityâ ™s printing presses would enable Euclidâ ™s geometry, Ptolemyâ ™s system of the stars and Galenâ ™s vast body of writings on medicine to spread even more widely. In tracing these fragile strands of knowledge from century to century, from east to west and north to south, Moller also reveals the web of connections between the Islamic world and Christendom. Connections that would both preserve and transform astronomy, mathematics and medicine from the early Middle Ages to the Renaissance.Vividly told and with a dazzling cast of characters, The Map of Knowledge is an evocative, nuanced and vibrant account of our common intellectual heritage. The Clay Machine-Gun - Victor Pelevin

The Clay Machine-Gun is a novel rich in hilarious paradox. Pelevin himself has described it as the first novel in world literature which takes place in an absolute void . Controversially denied the Russian Booker Prize - the Jury President branded it as a kind of computer virus designed to destroy the cultural memory - the book became a huge cult success in Russia. The Clay Machine-Gun is a nightmarish fantasy about identity, crime and Russian history. The action cuts deliriously between present-day Moscow and 1919, the era of the Civil War, in which the narrator finds himself serving as a commissar in the division of the legendary commander Vasily Chapaev, and his formidable machine-gunner sidekick, Anna. Hailed as the greatest Russian novel of the post-Soviet era, The Clay Machine-Gun confirmed Victor Pelevin s status as one of the brightest stars in the Russian literary firmament.

From these experiences he was led to Toltec spiritual teacher don Miguel Ruiz and began a deep spiritual journey of change.Sharing his journey from PTSD to spiritual awakening, Morris recounts his time as a civil rights advocate for the Montagnard people in Vietnam and his years as a war correspondent at the same time he was following Castaneda’s Warrior’s Way. Letters of Ted Hughes - Ted Hughes

At the outset of his career Ted Hughes described letter-writing as excellent training for conversation with the world , and he was to become a prolific master of this art which combines writing and talking. This selection begins when Hughes was seventeen, and documents the course of a life at once resolutely private but intensely attuned to other lives (including a readership comprising both adults and children); a life pared down to essentials and yet eventful, peripatetic, at times publicly controversial.

Lupercal - Ted Hughes

Lupercal was Ted Hughesâ ™s second collection, containing some of his most brilliant animal poetry. It confirmed his reputation as a major talent in British poetry. â ˜Hughes has found his own voice, created his own artistic world and has emerged as a poet of the first importance . . . What Ted Hughes has done is to take a limited, personal theme and, by an act of immensely assured poetic skill, has broadened it until it seems to touch upon nearly everything that concerns us.â ™ Al Alvarez, Observer, 27 March, 1960In language that is by now utterly distinctive, the poems both describe and deliver a kind of psychic shock. Hughesâ ™s singularity of vision provides a ready symbiosis between theme and subject â ” the brute survival instinct of â ˜Hawk Roostingâ ™ or â ˜Pikeâ ™, for instance; the rapturous attention bestowed upon â ˜An Otterâ ™ or â ˜The Bull Mosesâ ™; the pervasive legacy of human history that can be seen to saturate a Hughesian landscape.Lupercal is as vital and urgent today as it was when it was first published, its edict, implicit in every poem: to wake up, to pay attention.

Moby Dick; or, the Whale - Herman Melville

American author Herman Melville published his first novel, Moby-Dick; or, The Whale, in 1851. The story of Ahab, the captain of the whaling ship Pequod, and his irrational pursuit for vengeance against Moby Dick, the huge white sperm whale that wounded him on a previous journey, is told in the book by the sailor Ishmael. Moby-Dick, a work that contributed to the literature of the American Renaissance, had received mixed reviews upon publication, was a commercial flop, and was out of print when the author passed away in 1891. It wasn t until the 20th century, on the centennial of its author s birth in 1919, that it gained recognition as a Great American Novel. William Faulkner expressed regret for not having written the novel himself, while D. H. Lawrence praised it as the best book of the sea ever written and one of the oddest and most wonderful books in the world. One of the most well-known starting lines in all of literature is Call me Ishmael. Moby-Dick was started by Melville in February 1850, and it was finished a year later than he had intended, in 18 months. Melville drew on his observations as a common sailor between 1841 and 1844, especially those of whalers, as well as extensive reading in the literature on whaling.

By Heart - Ted Hughes

What has happened to the lost art of memorising poems? Why do we no longer feel that it is necessary to know the most enduring, beautiful poems in the English language by heart ? In his introduction Ted Hughes explains how we can overcome the problem by using a memory system that becomes easier the more frequently it is practised. The collected 101 poems are both personal favourites and particularly well-suited to the method Hughes demonstrates. Spanning four centuries, ranging from Shakespeare and Keats through to Thomas Hardy and Seamus Heaney, By Heart offers the reader a mental gymnasium in which the memory can be exercised and trained in the most pleasurable way. Some poems will be more of a challenge than others, but all will be treasured once they have become part of the memory bank. This edition is part of a series of anthologies edited by poets such as Don Paterson and Simon Armitage and features an attractive new design to complement an anthology of classic poems.

Inside the Whale - George Orwell

George Orwell set out to make political writing into an art , and to a wide extent this aim shaped the future of English literature â “ his descriptions of authoritarian regimes helped to form a new vocabulary that is fundamental to understanding totalitarianism. While 1984 and Animal Farm are amongst the most popular classic novels in the English language, this new series of Orwell s essays seeks to bring a wider selection of his writing on politics and literature to a new readership.Inside the Whale, the eighth in the Orwell s Essays series, discusses Henry Miller s controversial Tropic of Cancer, and considers the driving power behind the great books of the 1930s. Comparing Miller with other literary giants, Orwell lambasts the notion that all literature is good, forcing the reader to think for themselves, with his final words ringing in their ears: five thousand novels are published in England every year and four thousand nine hundred of them are tripe.

T.S. Eliot Prize, Forward Prize for Poetry či Whitbread Poetry Prize, a mnozí kritici ji považují za vrchol autorova díla.

Tales from Ovid - Ted Hughes

When Michael Hofmann and James Lasdun s ground-breaking anthology After Ovid (also Faber) was published in 1995, Hughes s three contributions to the collective effort were nominated by most critics as outstanding. He had shown that rare translator s gift for providing not just an accurate account of the original, but one so thoroughly imbued with his own qualities that it was as if Latin and English poet were somehow the same person. Tales from Ovid, which went on to win the Whitbread Prize for Poetry, continued the project of recreation with 24 passages, including the stories of Phaeton, Actaeon, Echo and Narcissus, Procne, Midas and Pyramus and Thisbe. In them, Hughes s supreme narrative and poetic skills combine to produce a book that stands, alongside his Crow and Gaudete, as an inspired addition to the myth-making of our time.
