Monografie o básnickém díle Jana Zahradníčka sleduje vlastně jediný problém, který by bylo možné formulovat následovně: Jak hluboko a jak intenzivně proniká básnické zření do skutečnosti světa a proměňuje ji v básnický obraz? A jak hluboko je básnická zkušenost zakotvena v našem světě? Na jedné straně je recepce Zahradníčkova díla poznamenána citelnou, bezmála padesátiletou cézurou (nepočítáme-li léta 1966–1969), kdy Zahradníčkovo jméno bylo vyškrtnuto z české literatury. Na druhé straně je právě tato mezera a absence možností výzvou k tomu, abychom si nad Zahradníčkovými básněmi položili několik – pro jeho dílo zásadních – poetologických otázek a pokusili se na ně odpovědět. Tvrdí-li počátkem 30. let F. X. Šalda, že je u Zahradníčka – z tehdy nejmladší české poezie – „nejvíc myšlenky a étosu“, můžeme se dále ptát, jakým způsobem koexistují v Zahradníčkově poezii nejen myšlenka a étos, ale také a především myšlenka a cit.
