Studie Jiřího Olšovského nabízí srovnání filosofických koncepcí dvou předních myslitelů - Martina Heideggera (1889-1976) a Sorena Kierkegaarda (1813-1855), a to s důrazem na propracovanější Heideggerův pokus. Oba tito filosofové se snaží myslet postmetafyzicky, alespoň v náznaku překračovat ontotheologická omezení a subjektivistický voluntarismus moderní doby. Autor se pokouší nalézt společné rysy v jejich jinak odlišném myšlení, blíže vystopovat a určit možný Kierkegaardův vliv na předního fenomenologického ontologa dvacátého století a nastínit, za co ve svém myšlení Heidegger vděčí Kierkegaardovi, k němuž se zejména ve svém raném rozvrhu vztahoval a učil se od něho myslet proti metafyzice. Vlastní Heideggerův rozvrh myšlení je zde ovšem vždy představen v nasvícení Kierkegaardem, nepochybným otcem existenciální filosofie. Vedle podobnosti obou myslitelů studie vyjeví i rozdílnost v jejich pojetí lidské existence a života. Pečlivým zkoumáním obou filosofických rozvrhů se tak nabízí komplexnější pohled na vztah těchto dvou významných myslitelů.

Tyto studie vznikaly v období pokrývajícím několik desetiletí. Úvodní část knihy obsahuje Levinasovy rané studie o Husserlovi a Heideggerovi, jejichž cílem je představit jejich myšlení francouzskému čtenáři. V dalších částech najdeme texty, ve kterých si Levinas se svými někdejšími učiteli vyrovnává účty, pokud jde o specifičtější otázky - o problematiku řeči, intencionality, počitku atd. Toto zaujetí odstupu mu potom umožňuje vybudovat v průběhu času svou vlastní, původní myšlenkovou pozici, která bude ve své rozvinuté podobě vyjádřena v knihách Totalita a nekonečno(1961) či Jinak než být aneb mimo esenci (1974). Konkrétní podoby rozvíjení této pozice lze sledovat v textech tvořících závěrečné partie přítomného souboru, v nichž jsouněkteré motivy ze zmíněných knihjiž zcela jasně naznačeny. Čtenáři se tímto způsobem dostává do rukou určité svědectví o filosofickém vývoji Levinase samotného, jež bezesporu umožňuje lépe uchopit jeho vlastní přínos pro francouzskou fenomenologii i pro filosofii obecně.
