Hearing Homer
From the acclaimed biographer of Jane Jacobs and Srinivasa Ramanujan comes the first full life and work of arguably the most influential classical scholar of the twentieth century, who overturned long-entrenched notions of ancient epic poetry and enlarged the very idea of literature. In this literary detective story, Robert Kanigel gives us a long overdue portrait of an Oakland druggist s son who became known as the Darwin of Homeric studies. So thoroughly did Milman Parry change our thinking about the origins of Homer s Iliad and Odyssey that scholars today refer to a before Parry and an after. Kanigel describes the before, when centuries of readers, all the way up until Parry s trailblazing work in the 1930 s, assumed that the Homeric epics were written texts, the way we think of most literature; and the after that we now live in, where we take it for granted that they are the result of a long and winding oral tradition. Parry made it his life s work to develop and prove this revolutionary theory, and Kanigel brilliantly tells his remarkable story--cut short by Parry s mysterious death by gunshot wound at the age of thirty-three.From UC Berkeley to the Sorbonne to Harvard to Yugoslavia--where he traveled to prove his idea definitively by studying its traditional singers of heroic poetry--we follow Parry on his idiosyncratic journey, observing just how his early notions blossomed into a full-fledged theory. Kanigel gives us an intimate portrait of Parry s marriage to Marian Thanhouser and their struggles as young parents in Paris, and explores the mystery surrounding Parry s tragic death at the Palms Hotel in Los Angeles. Tracing Parry s legacy to the modern day, Kanigel explores how what began as a way to understand the Homeric epics became the new field of oral theory, which today illuminates everything from Beowulf to jazz improvisation, from the Old Testament to hip-hop.

Homer - James I Porter
The story of our ongoing fascination with Homer, the man and the myth. Â Homer, the great poet of the Iliad and the Odyssey, is revered as a cultural icon of antiquity and a figure of lasting influence. But his identity is shrouded in questions about who he was, when he lived, and whether he was an actual person, a myth, or merely a shared idea. Rather than attempting to solve the mystery of this character, James I. Porter explores the sources of Homerâ ™s mystique and their impact since the first recorded mentions of Homer in ancient Greece. Â Homer: The Very Idea considers Homer not as a man, but as a cultural invention nearly as distinctive and important as the poems attributed to him, following the cultural history of an idea and of the obsession that is reborn every time Homer is imagined. Offering novel readings of texts and objects, the book follows the very idea of Homer from his earliest mentions to his most recent imaginings in literature, criticism, philosophy, visual art, and classical archaeology. Boasting one of the most significant collections of Homer s watercolors in the United States, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, presents a luminous collection of nearly 50 works that demonstrate the artist s mastery of the medium. Readers will be transported to the rugged Maine coast, the rivers and streams of the Adirondacks, the weathered shores of seaside England and the bright beaches of the Caribbean. The many facets of these environmentsâ ”ecological, artistic, social and economicâ ”are reflected in Homer s thoughtful compositions that, though more than 100 years old, shine with a modern effervescence. Winslow Homer (1836â “1910) was born in Boston and apprenticed to a commercial lithographer. He taught himself painting while working as a freelance illustrator for Harper s and other magazines. In 1883 he moved into his permanent home and studio in Prouts Neck, Maine, but continued to find inspiration in his travels to Canada, Cuba, the Bahamas, Key West and the Adirondacks.

Four Ways of Hearing Video Game Music - Michiel Kamp
Four Ways of Hearing Video Game Music offers a novel account of the ways in which video games invite us to hear and listen to their music. By taking a phenomenological approach to characterize music in video games, author Michiel Kamp asks what it is we hear in the music when we play a game. Drawing on past phenomenological approaches to music as well as studies of music listening in a variety of disciplines such as aesthetics and ecological psychology, Kamp explains four main ways of hearing the same piece of music--through background, aesthetic, ludic, and semiotic hearing. As a background, music is not attended to at all, but can still be described in terms of moods, affordances, or equipment. Aesthetic hearing is a reflective attitude that invites hermeneutic interpretation; ludic hearing on the other hand invites playing along to the music, either through embodied movement, or in response to the music s cinematic or theatrical connotations. Finally, in semiotic hearing, Kamp argues that we hear music as transparent symbols or signals that provide information about the state of a game. The book investigates these four categories through detailed case studies of video games from a variety of eras and genres accompanied by gameplay recordings and images on a companion website.

The Odyssey - Homér
With an Introduction and Notes by Adam Roberts, Royal Holloway, University of London. Homer s great epic describes the many adventures of Odysseus, Greek warrior, as he strives over many years to return to his home island of Ithaca after the Trojan War. His colourful adventures, his endurance, his love for his wife and son have the same power to move and inspire readers today as they did in Archaic Greece, 2800 years ago. This poem has been translated many times over the years, but Chapman s sinewy, gorgeous rendering (1616) stands in a class of its own. Chapman believed himself inspired by the spirit of Homer himself, and matches the breadth and power of the original with a complex and stunning idiom of his own. John Keats expressed his admiration for the resulting work in the famous sonnet, On first looking into Chapman s Homer : Much have I travelled in the realms of gold... This new Wordsworth edition of Chapman s Homer contains accessible annotation, and a detailed introduction that places his masterpiece in the context of his own day, and discusses its influences on later poets.

The Iliad - Homér
A stunning Penguin clothbound edition of Homer s great epic, in E. V. Rieu s classic translation. The Iliad is the first and the greatest literary achievement of Greek civilization - an epic poem without rival in the literature of the world, and the cornerstone of Western culture. The story centres on the critical events in the last year of the Trojan War, which lead to Achilleus killing of Hektor and determine the fate of Troy. But Homer s theme is not simply war or heroism. With compassion and humanity, he presents a universal and tragic view of the world, of human life lived under the shadow of suffering and death, set against a vast and largely unpitying divine background.. Seven Greek cities claim the honour of being the birthplace of Homer (c. 8th-7th century BC), the poet to whom the composition of the Iliadand Odyssey are attributed. The Iliad is the oldest surviving work of Western literature, but the identity - or even the existence - of Homer himself is a complete mystery, with no reliable biographical information having survived.E. V. Rieu initiated Penguin Classics with Allen Lane and his famous translation of the Odyssey was the first book published in the series in 1947. The Iliad followed in 1950.

The Odyssey - Homér
Setting aside the streamlining, modernizing approach of many recent translations, Mendelsohn artfully reproduces the epic’s formal qualities – meter, enjambment, alliteration, assonance – and in so doing restores to Homer’s masterwork its archaic grandeur. His expansive six-beat line, far closer to the original than that of other recent translations, allows him to capture each of Homer’s verses line for line, without sacrificing the amplitude and shadings of the original. The result is the richest, most precise, and most musical Odyssey in English, one that fully conveys its oral poetics while bringing to vivid life the gripping adventure, profound human insight and powerful themes that make Homer’s work resonate some twenty-eight centuries after its composition. Supported by an extensive introduction and the fullest notes and commentary currently available, Mendelsohn’s Odyssey is poised to become the authoritative English-language version of this magnificent, endlessly enjoyable masterpiece.

Sing, goddess, the anger of Peleusâ ™ son Achilleus / and its devastation. For sixty years, that s how Homer has begun the Iliad in English, in Richmond Lattimore s faithful translationâ ”the gold standard for generations of students and general readers. This long-awaited new edition of Lattimore s Iliad is designed to bring the book into the twenty-first centuryâ ”while leaving the poem as firmly rooted in ancient Greece as ever. Lattimore s elegant, fluent versesâ ”with their memorably phrased heroic epithets and remarkable fidelity to the Greekâ ”remain unchanged, but classicist Richard Martin has added a wealth of supplementary materials designed to aid new generations of readers. A new introduction sets the poem in the wider context of Greek life, warfare, society, and poetry, while line-by-line notes at the back of the volume offer explanations of unfamiliar terms, information about the Greek gods and heroes, and literary appreciation. A glossary and maps round out the book. The result is a volume that actively invites readers into Homer s poem, helping them to understand fully the worlds in which he and his heroes livedâ ”and thus enabling them to marvel, as so many have for centuries, at Hektor and Ajax, Paris and Helen, and the devastating rage of Achilleus.

Ilias a Odyssea. Výběr zpěvů z básnických eposů řeckého starověku - Homér - audiokniha
Audiokniha: Komentář k původnímu LP 0 18 0424 z roku 1968: Přebohatou obrazností plastickou zvládl řecký člověk vzrušení, úžas i tíhu dojmů z tohoto světa a dal mu jméno kosmos, tj. Proti lehkomyslnému krasavci Paridovi statečný hrdina i něžný otec rodiny Hektór, hrdý Agamemnón, nebojácný Aiás, váhavý Meneláos, vznětlivý Diomédés, bystrý a chytrý Odysseus. V Odysseji má Helena neméně ušlechtilý protiklad v Pénelopě, oddané a věrné choti Odysseově. Krásný a statečný Achilleus bude vždycky dojímat krátkostí svého lidského údělu a nevýslovnou láskou k životu. Teprve mnohem později, kdy mýtus již nebyl s to vycházet vstříc rozmanitým obměnám lidského soužení, novodobý román, zvláště psychologický, osamělé hledání vnitřní jistoty, rozvinul k dokonalosti umění introspekce a analýzy zážitků lidského nitra. A nebyl by to lidský úděl, kdyby s tou plností a vášnivostí života nekontrastovala skutečnost smrti.

With an Introduction and Notes by Adam Roberts, Royal Holloway, University of London. The product of more than a decade s continuous work (1598-1611), Chapman s translation of Homer s great poem of war is a magnificent testimony to the power of The Iliad. In muscular, onward-rolling verse Chapman retells the story of Achilles, the great warrior, and his terrible wrath before the walls of besieged Troy, and the destruction it wreaks on both Greeks and Trojans.Chapman regarded the translation of this epic, and of Homer s Odyssey (also available in Wordsworth Editions) as his life s work, and dedicated himself to capturing the soul of the poem.Swinburne praised the resulting translation for its â ˜romantic and sometimes barbaric grandeur, its freshness, strength, and inexhaustible fireâ ™, qualities that reflect the grandeur, fire and brutality of the original poem. This new edition includes a critical introduction and extensive notes, rendering Chapmanâ ™s extraordinary poetic masterpiece accessible to modern readers.

I Love Hearing Your Dreams - Matthew Zapruder
From a poet whose “poems don’t merely attempt beauty; they attain it” (Boston Review), an enchanting and harrowing journey through the landscape of dreams and twenty-first century hopes and disillusions.“Your dreams / have no hidden / agenda to be wise / they are made / to be forgotten / so something / can be known” I Love Hearing Your Dreams is a book of reveries, of failed elegies, of “the last time that things were real” and the moments that come afterward. These are dream songs for an age of insomnia, where the poet is always awake “at that oddest hour / that does not end, / the crooked, unnumbered one” and the future seems to be “just the past in a suit / that will never be in style.” Yet dreams in Matthew Zapruder’s poems are also a place of possibility, of reality envisioned anew—sleep shows us not merely what the world is, but what it could be. From a poet celebrated for his “razor eye for the remnants and revenants of modern culture” (The New York Times), I Love Hearing Your Dreams is a startlingly beautiful and deeply vulnerable book where lives journey into a mystifying place and emerge transformed.

Albert jede domů - Homer Hickam
Román Albert jede domů, inspirovaný životy autorových rodičů, vypráví laskavý, zábavný a dojemný příběh mladého manželského páru, jenž v doprovodu poněkud zarážejícího domácího mazlíčka - aligátora jménem Albert - vyrazí na zdánlivě pošetilou cestu napříč Amerikou třicátých let.

HarperCollins is proud to present its new range of best-loved, essential classics.â ˜Alas that mortalsShould blame the gods! From us, they say,All evils come. Yet they themselvesIt is who through defiant deedsBring sorrow on them-far more sorrowThan fate would have them bear.â ™Attributed to the blind Greek poet, Homer, The Odyssey is an epic tale about cunning and strength of mind. It takes its starting point ten years after the fall of the city of Troy and follows its Greek warrior hero Odysseus as he tries to journey to his home of Ithaca in northwest Greece after the Greek victory over the Trojans. On his travels, Odysseus comes across surreal islands and foreign lands where he is in turn challenged and supported by those that he meets on his travels as he attempts to find his way back home in order to vanquish those who threaten his estate. In turn, his son Telemachus has to grow up quickly as he attempts to find his father and protect his mother from her suitors.Dealing with the universal themes of temptation and courage, the epic journey that Odysseus undertakes is as meaningful today as it was almost 3,000 years ago when the story was composed.

It describes King Odysseus of Ithaca s epic, ten-year quest to return home after the Trojan War. He encounters giants, sorceresses, sea-monsters and sirens, while his wife Penelope is forced to resist the suitors who besiege her on Ithaca. Both an enchanting fairy tale and a gripping drama, The Odyssey is immensely influential, not least for its rich complexity and the magnetism of its hero. The Iliad - Homér
Fitzgerald has solved virtually every problem that has plagued translators of Homer. Atlantic Monthly The Iliad is the story of a few days fighting in the tenth year of the legendary war between the Greeks and the Trojans, which broke out when Paris, son of King Priam of Troy, abducted the fabulously beautiful Helen, wife of King Menelaus of Sparta. After a quarrel between the Greek commander, Agamemnon, and the greatest of the Greek warriors, Achilles, the gods become more closely involved in the action. Their intervention leads to the tragic death of Hector, the Trojan leader, and to the final defeat of the Trojans. But the Iliad is much more than a series of battle scenes. It is a work of extraordinary pathos and profundity that concerns itself with issues as fundamental as the meaning of life and death. Even the heroic ethic itself - with its emphasis on pride, honour, prowess in battle, and submission to the inexorable will of the gods - is not left unquestioned. Homer Kelley
In 1939, an average Joe named Homer Kelley played golf for the first time and scored 116 - a respectable score for a beginner but frustrating for a science-obsessed perfectionist like Kelley. He did not play again for six months, then carded a 77. He devoted the next 30 years to solving the science behind the perfect golf swing. Here, veteran journalist Scott Gummer brings to light the untold story of golf s most curious genius.

The Hearing Test - Eliza Barry Callahan
An artist in her late twenties awakens one morning to a deep drone in her right ear. She is diagnosed with Sudden Deafness, but is offered no explanation for its cause. As the specter of total deafness looms, she keeps a record of her year - a score of estrangement and enchantment, of luck and loneliness, of the chance occurrences to which she becomes attuned - while living alone in a New York City studio apartment with her dog. Through a series of fleeting and often humorous encounters - with neighbours, an ex-lover, doctors, strangers, family members, faraway friends, and with the lives and works of artists, filmmakers, musicians, and philosophers - making meaning becomes a form of consolation and curiosity, a form of survival. At once a rumination on silence and a novel on seeing, The Hearing Test is a work of vitalizing intellect and playfulness which marks the arrival of a major new literary writer with a rare command of form, compression, and intent.

Hearing the Message of Habakkuk - Christopher J. H. Wright
What does it mean to be faithful disciples in a violent and unjust world?Habakkuk described an era of rampant moral and social evil among his own people, and a vision of the rapid rise of the Babylonian empire under Nebuchadnezzar. The world he described is familiar in so many eras of human history, including our own. The frightening international tensions, confusion about political alignments and alliances, fractured moral and religious traditions, and social dissolution and degradation cause the same fear and anxiety today as they did back then.Confusing is a mild world for it--international, political, religious, moral confusion. It was (and still is) a world of national wickedness and international turmoil and violence, a world in which God appears to be asleep on his watch and yet claims to be working a work in Habakkuk s day and ours.Hearing the Message of Habakkuk walks through the questions the prophet asked God about injustice and the jaw-dropping answers he received. This popular-level exposition addresses:God s silence.God s sovereignty.Living by faith.God s judgement.Trusting God s Word. What we learn from Habakkuk s dialogue with God can help us today as we struggle to work out what it means to believe in God s sovereignty, justice, and love, and to live as faithful disciples in an unjust world.
