The stunning Frankenstein special edition features sprayed edges, color end pages, a built-in ribbon bookmark, and embossed foil cover. The beautiful design and attention to detail set this special edition book apart, whether you’re reading for the first time or building a library of your favorite classic literature books. Dr. Victor Frankenstein never considers the consequences of his obsession. In his zeal to understand and harness the secret of life, he neglects his family and friends, isolates himself from the world, and ignores his own health. For years, he labors to create a new race of intelligent beings. He spends his nights scrounging human and animal body parts from graveyards, slaughterhouses, and hospital dissection rooms. By day he experiments in his secret laboratory, learning from his mistakes and perfecting the creature who, he believes, will worship him as a god. But this hubris is not his only sin. When he succeeds, Frankenstein is horrified by the ugly brutishness of the patchwork being he has brought to life. Rather than exult in his accomplishment, he runs from it, retreating to the comfort of long-neglected friends and family. Frankenstein has, indeed, created a monster. Not by reanimating dead flesh, but by abandoning his creation and planting within it the seeds of rage and loneliness. Now, the monster is out for revenge. First published in 1818, Frankenstein (also known as The Modern Prometheus) by Mary Shelley stands as a monumental work in the canon of Gothic literature and is widely regarded as one of the first science fiction novels. Conceived during a story contest among friends on a stormy night, Shelley's novel tells the tale of Victor Frankenstein, a young scientist who creates a sentient creature in an unorthodox scientific experiment. The novel delves into themes of creation and responsibility, examining the consequences of man's ambition and the ethical limits of scientific exploration. Shelley's work is a profound commentary on the potential perils of playing God and the moral obligations creators have to their creations. Today, Frankenstein remains incredibly relevant, echoing in modern debates on emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, genetic engineering, and bioethics. Its exploration of human identity, monstrousness, and isolation also speaks to contemporary issues of social justice and acceptance, making Frankenstein a timeless reflection on the human condition.

Frankenstein - Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley

By the dim and yellow light of the moon, as it forced its way through the window-shutters, I beheld the wretch-the miserable monster whom I had created. He held up the curtain of the bed; and his eyes, if eyes they may be called, were fixed on me. His jaws opened...Frankenstein is the most celebrated horror story ever written. It tells the dreadful tale of Victor Frankenstein, a visionary young student of natural philosophy, who discovers the secret of life. In the grip of his obsession he constructs a being from dead body parts, and animates this creature. The results, for Victor and for his family, are catastrophic.Written when Mary Shelley was just eighteen, Frankenstein was inspired by the ghost stories and vogue for Gothic literature that fascinated the Romantic writers of her time. She transformed these supernatural elements an epic parable that warned against the threats to humanity posed by accelerating technological progress. Published for the 200th anniversary, this edition, based on the original 1818 text, explains in detail the turbulent intellectual context in which Shelley was writing, and also investigates how her novel has since become a byword for controversial practices in science and medicine, from manipulating ecosystems to vivisection and genetic modification. As an iconic study of power, creativity, and, ultimately, what it is to be human, Frankenstein continues to shape our thinking in profound ways to this day.

Frankenstein - Mary W. Shelley

A twisted, upside-down creation myth that gave birth to the modern science fiction novel Frankenstein, Mary Shelley's chilling Gothic tale, lays bare the dark side of science, and the horror within us all. Written after a nightmare Mary Shelley was only eighteen, this book gave birth to the modern science fiction novel. Set against the backdrop of Europe in the late 18th century, Frankenstein explores themes of scientific ethics, the nature of monstrosity, and the consequences of playing god.The book follows the ambitious scientist Victor Frankenstein who plunders graveyards to create a human-like creature from reanimated body parts, driven by his desire to overcome death and unlock the secrets of life. Frankenstein is often considered a reflection of the cultural and scientific anxieties of the time, with the Industrial Revolution and advancements in science raising questions about the ethical boundaries of scientific exploration. Despite first being published in 1818, this novel remains relevant today, prompting discussions on the consequences of unchecked ambition and societal rejection of the “other.” This seminal work is perfect for fans of the Gothic and science fiction genres.

Frankenstein (Mary Shelleyová-Různí interpreti) (MP3-CD) - rozhlasová dramatizace

Mary Shelleyová - Frankenstein. Světoznámý horor vypráví příběh mladého vědce Viktora Frankensteina, který stvoří umělého člověka, ohavné monstrum s nadlidskou silou? Stovky adaptací divadelních, filmových i rozhlasových, komiksy, a dokonce i počítačové hry. Mary Wollstonecra Shelleyová u prvního vydání ani nezveřejnila své autorství, takže Frankenstein vyšel v roce 1818 anonymně a v nákladu pouhých pěti set výtisků.

Frankenstein - Mary W. Shelley

One of BBC’s 100 Novels That Shaped Our World, Frankenstein is the most famous novel by Mary Shelley: a dark parable of science misused. Victor Frankenstein, a brilliant but wayward scientist, builds a human from dead flesh. Horrified at what he has done, he abandons his creation. The hideous creature learns language and becomes civilized but society rejects him. Spurned, he seeks vengeance on his creator. So begins a cycle of destruction, with Frankenstein and his ‘monster’ pursuing each other to the extremes of nature until all vestiges of their humanity are lost.In 1831, Mary Shelley succumbed to conservative pressures and toned down elements of the work; this edition presents the work as originally intended. This series of gorgeous pocket-sized paperbacks from Macmilan Collector's Library celebrates the very best Gothic and horror literature, teeming with monsters, misfits and ghosts.

The book that translated the dark and stormy ethos of the gothic novel into the foundation for the tale of modern science fiction, now freshly repackaged for the Union Square & Co. Signature Clothbound Editions line. Frankenstein has, indeed, created a monster, not by animating dead flesh but by abandoning his creation and planting within it the seeds of rage and loneliness. Now, the monster is out for revenge.
