Narozdíl od něj má však Walton stále možnost volby, a tím i naději na vlastní záchranu. Původní verze příběhu o Frankensteinovi byla napsána během deštivého léta r. 1816, které trávila Mary Godwinová se svým nastávajícím manželem Percy Bysshe Shelleym na dovolené na Ženevském jezeře, v jehož okolí se velká část románu odehrává. Z původní hříčky se však vyklubal kultovní román, základní stavební kámen hororového žánru, který přežil přes desítky generací.
