Všechny tři knihy – nazvané Na tom nesejde, Špatná zpráva a Trocha naděje – se odehrávají během jednoho dne a autor nám v nich prostřednictvím mistrných črt nabízí pohled nejen do prostředí britské společenské smetánky, ale i do odvykacích center a newyorské drogové scény. Vypravěč je uchvácen svým démonickým otcem – ten na něm v prvním díle ukájí své sadistické choutky, v druhém díle je přítomen již jen jako stín (už dospělý Patrick cestuje do New Yorku vyzvednout jeho ostatky) a v díle třetím vystupuje jako vzpomínka, na niž nejde zapomenout, ale ani se s ní usmířit. „Hamlet na heroinu“, „makabrózní groteska hnaná sebedestruktivní touhou“ – i tak označovala ostrovní kritika St Aubynovo dílo.
