Vystudoval management na prestižní univerzitě Yonsei. Pozornost čtenářů i kritiky přitáhl už jeho první román Mám právo se zničit, který získal ocenění nakladatelského domu Munhakdongne. Těžiště jeho tvorby spočívá především v románech, mezi které patří i Říše světla (česky Argo, 2013). Během své dosavadní kariéry získal prakticky všechna významná korejská literární ocenění a jeho díla byla adaptována pro film, televizi, divadlo i muzikál.
