Roku 1887 opatřil Nietzsche neprodané zásoby předmluvou a nakladatel E. W. Fritzsch v Lipsku je uvedl na trh jako druhé vydání. Spis, který se v chronologii Nietzschova díla nalézá mezi Lidským, příliš lidským (1878-1880) a Radostnou vědou (1882), je souborem úvah, postřehů a aforismů, promyšleně seskupených do pěti knih, které nemají vlastní názvy, jsou však komponovány kolem tematických těžišť.
