Když slyšíme slovo "gulag", vybaví se nám nejprve kniha Souostroví GULAG Alexandra Solženicyna: systém tisíců táborů nucených prací rozesetých po celé rozloze Sovětského svazu. Téměř totožný systém však existoval v každé zemi, kterou po druhé světové válce ovládli komunisté - včetně Československa. Na území současné Evropské unie a jejich nejbližších sousedů fungovalo po více než jednu dekádu nejméně 800 táborů. Bylo v nich uvězněno téměř 1 500 000 lidi, z nichž 130 000 zemřelo. Česko-anglický katalog k mezinárodní výstavě Evropský GULAG přináší fotografie, příběhy i strohá fakta, dokumentující pracovní tábory, kde v otrockých podmínkách žili, pracovali a také často umírali lidé někdy i bez jakéhokoli rozsudku, a po nichž ve většině případů nezůstaly žádné hmotné stopy. Publikace připomíná mimo jiné i Čechoslováky zavlečené do sovětských lágrů či zmiňuje roli Západu, který byl dlouho neochotný připustit si pravdu o nových "koncentračních" táborech na území svého nedávného spojence v boji proti nacismu.
