Děj se odehrává v časech, kdy v ovzduší rezonují naděje nadcházejícího svobodomyslného desetiletí i první písně Beatles, proslýchá se cosi o americkém vynálezu v podobě antikoncepční pilulky, společnost však žije zcela v zajetí tradiční morálky. Oba protagonisté novely jsou „mladí, vzdělaní“ a bez předsudků, jak nás autor neopomene upozornit hned v úvodní větě, a přesto je jejich vztah dobově podmíněný mnohem víc, než si jsou ochotni připustit. Hořkosladká rekapitulace z perspektivy mnohaletého odstupu v závěru knihy o tom podává výmluvné svědectví.
