Krátce poté Robur unese dva členy klubu, jeho předsedu „strýce" Prudenta a zapisovatele Phila Evanse, na palubu svého vzdušného korábu Albatros. Cílem únosu je Roburova snaha dokázat členům klubu nadřazenost svého vznášedla, a proto s ním hodlá uskutečnit během tří týdnů dobrodružnou cestu kolem světa…

Michail Strogov je kurýr, kterého car vyslal do Irkutska, aby tamního velkoknížete, carova bratra, varoval před zradou Ivana Ogareva, který chce Irkutsk vydat Tatarům a velkoknížete zavraždit. Během své cesty se Strogov setkává a dále všemi možnými způsoby dopravy cestuje s dívkou Naďou, která se snaží dostat do Irkutska za svým otcem, který tam žije ve vyhnanství. Cestou jsou však zajati Tatary a na příkaz emíra je Strogov rozžhaveným mečem oslepen. Nakonec však ze zajetí unikne a po strastiplné cestě dorazí do Irkutska. Stihne to ale včas, nebo se Ogarevovi již podařilo dokonat svoji zradu? A nebyl by to ani Verne, aby do knihy nepropašoval zajímavý fyzikální úkaz, který přispěje k rozuzlení děje.

Plující město je román s autobiografickým nádechem a je vyprávěn v první osobě. Je samozřejmě také součástí autorovy série Podivuhodná putování. Součástí tohoto svazku je i novela Prorazili blokádu. Mísí se v něm autorovy skutečné zážitky s fikcí. K napsání románu ho inspirovala společná plavba s bratrem Paulem na do té doby největším parníku světa Great Eastern z Liverpoolu do New Yorku v roce 1867. Všechno svědčí o tom, že Verne byl lodí nadšen, přestože líčí i celou řadu drobných nehod a neštěstí plynoucích z ne zcela zvládnuté technologie výroby tak obrovského námořního kolosu (výtlak 18 915 tun, délka 210 metrů, šířka 25 metrů, počet cestujících 2996). Verne v lodi vidí vítězství lidského génia a pro její vybavenost a rozměry ji nazval plujícím městem. Autor do popisu lodi a svých zážitků z USA vložil drobný, ale dramatický milostný příběh ženy, která zešílí, když zjistí, že na palubě lodi je jak muž, kterého opravdu miluje, tak i její manžel, kterého nenávidí, a mezi oběma muži dojde k tragickému střetnutí.
