From the Earth to the Moon / Around the Moon - Jules Verne

Jules Verne (1828-1905) was internationally famous as the author of novels based on ‘extraordinary voyages.’ His visionary use of new travel technologies inspired his readers to look to the industrial future rather than the remote past for their dreams of adventure. The popularity of his novels led directly to modern science fiction. In From the Earth to the Moon and Around the Moon, Jules Verne turned the ancient fantasy of space flight into a believable technological possibility – an engineering dream for the industrial age. Directly inspired by Verne’s story, enthusiasts worked successfully at overcoming the practical difficulties, and within a century, human beings did indeed fly to the Moon. Curiously, however, Verne is unlikely to have thought it possible that a manned projectile could actually be fired out of a giant cannon, rising higher than the Moon, swinging around it, and then landing safely back on Earth. He had used the science of the day to construct a literary conjuring trick, a hoax, one of the most successful in all history. By skilful misdirection he drew the attention of readers away from weaknesses in the project. Read the book and you, too, will be fooled into accepting the realistic possibility ... Michael Strogoff - Jules Verne

Jules Verne wrote The Courier of the Czar in 1876, according to Michael Strogoff. It is regarded as one of Verne's best books by critic Leonard S. Davidow. Jules Verne hasn't written a greater book than this, according to Davidow, and it is rightfully regarded as one of the most exciting stories ever written. It is not science fiction, in contrast to several of Verne's other books, but rather uses a scientific phenomenon as a plot element. A play based on the book was later created by Verne and Adolphe d'Ennery. The play's incidental music was composed by Franz von Suppé in 1893 and Alexandre Artus in 1880. The book has had numerous adaptations for movies, television shows, and cartoons. Michael Strogoff, a native of Omsk, age 30, serves as a messenger for Tsar Alexander II of Russia. Strogoff is dispatched to Irkutsk to inform the governor of the treacherous former colonel Ivan Ogareff, who was once degraded and exiled by this Tsar brother, who is now a traitor. Now that he has the governor's trust, he plans to betray both of them and Irkutsk to the Tartar hordes in order to exact revenge.

Around the World in Eighty Days - Jules Verne

Having assured the members of London''s exclusive Reform Club that he will circumnavigate the world in 80 days, Fogg - stiff, repressed, English - starts by joining forces with an irrepressible Frenchman, Passepartout, and then with a ravishing Indian beauty, Aouda. Together they slice through jungles, over snowbound passes, even across an entire isthmus - only to get back five minutes late. Fogg faces despair and suicide, but Aouda makes a new man of him, able to face even the Reform Club again. Around the World in Eighty Days (1872) contains a strong dose of post-Romantic reality plus extensive borrowing from the author''s own Journey to England and Scotland - but not a shred of science fiction. Its modernism lies instead in the experimental literary technique, with parallel plots, a narrator constantly made to look foolish, four characters in search of their own unconscious, and a unique twisting of space and time. Verne''s classic, a bestseller for over a century, has never appeared in a critical edition before. William Butcher''s stylish new translation moves as fast and as brilliantly as Fogg''s own journey. Nový hrabě Monte Christo - Jules Verne, Ondřej Neff - audiokniha

Audiokniha: Matyáš Sandorf – napínavý příběh zrady, pomsty, a spravedlnosti.

V kritických situacích vychází najevo skutečná povaha mnohých postav (neschopnost, zbabělost, sobectví, chtivost, závist, sadismus i kanibalismus), kterou do té doby skrývaly pod slupkou civilizace. Jules Verne napsal svůj román výstižným slohem a bez příkras, s vynecháním u něho jinak běžných poučných a veselých pasáží, které by ostatně vzhledem k námětu byly sotva vhodné.

Humorem a ironií pak maskoval nedostatek lidských vědomostí o Měsíci. Kterýsi literární kritik se o Vernovi pochvalně vyjádřil v listu Le Temps: "Pan Verne má dvě vlastnosti, které zřídkakdy nacházíme u jednoho člověka: přesnost vědce a fantazii prvotřídního vypravěče".Tyto dvě vlastnosti se šťastně spojily i v knize Cesta kolem Měsíce. Desetidílnou četbu na pokračování z překladu Jaroslava Čermáka připravila Barbora Bukovinská. V režii Vlada Ruska účinkuje Jiří Ornest.

Ledová sfinga - Jules Verne - audiokniha

Audiokniha: V Ledové sfinze se Verne pokusil navázat na "Dobrodružství Arthura Gordona Pyma" od Edgara Allana Poea. Poeovo fascinující vyprávění o plavbě do jižních moří končí tajuplnou scénou: uprchlíci se ocitají v oblaku páry, z něhož probleskuje jakási bílá postava...
