Teoretik Karel Teige ve dvacátých letech minulého století použil slovní metaforu "divadlo ulice" pro pulzující, dynamický vizuálně-akustický děj, který se tou dobou odehrával v centrech větších měst. Měl tím na mysli nejen všudypřítomný dopravní lomoz a ruch, ale i novou urbánní ikonografii, kterou tvořily vývěsní štíty, portály obchodů, osvětlené výkladní skříně, fasádní velkoplošná reklama a blikající neony.Výkladní skříně s rafinovaně aranžovaným zbožím neušly pozornosti surrealistů, kteří obdivovali jejich absurdní a vynalézavé sestavy, světelné iluminace byly blízké experimentům konstruktivistů, reklamy a nápisy vycházely z moderní typografie a osvědčených postupů, jak získat pozornost kolemjdoucích a "flanérů".Pro pochopení meziválečného modernismu představuje ono pomíjivé "divadlo ulice" klíčové téma, přesto se tato oblast nestala nikterak rozšířeným námětem pro odborné studie.Tato kniha se snaží najít průsečík mezi obchodem a uměním, mezi "nízkým" a "vysokým", mezi popkulturou, komerční propagací a nezávislou tvorbou.
