Charles Darwin (1809–1882) byl slavný britský přírodovědec, geolog a botanik, zakladatel evoluční biologie. Prohlásil, že všechny druhy organismů se postupně vyvinuly ze společných předků, a představil vědeckou teorii, podle níž je tato evoluce výsledkem přírodního výběru, při kterém se uplatňuje zápas o přežití každého jednotlivce i druhu. Mezi jeho nejslavnější knihy dále patří O vzniku druhů přírodním výběrem (1859) a O původu člověka (1871).
