Community-Engaged Scholarship
A collection of stories by Penn alumni whose lives were transformed by engaging with the West Philadelphia community For over thirty years, the Barbara and Edward Netter Center for Community Partnerships has served as the University of Pennsylvania's primary vehicle for advancing civic and community engagement at Penn. The Netter Center develops and helps implement democratic, mutually transformative, place-based partnerships between Penn and its local geographic community of West Philadelphia. These partnerships advance research, teaching, learning, and service while improving the quality of life and learning in the community. One of the Netter Center's primary objectives has been to educate Penn students to be creative, compassionate, ethical citizens who contribute significantly to improving the welfare of others—while they are students and throughout their lives and careers. Community-Engaged Scholarship is a collection of stories told by alumni of the University of Pennsylvania whose lives were profoundly shaped by engaging with the West Philadelphia community as students. Experiential Learning and Community
Institutional autonomy, private interests, and relevance are central themes in the evolving discourse on the nature and role of higher education. Whether pushing institutions to become more responsive to industry and labour market demands or resisting these very pressures, leaders and policymakers insist that universities must adapt. Experiential Learning and Community explores the changing role of the university, with a particular focus on how the rise of experiential learning (EL) is reshaping teaching and learning.Through the lens of EL, universities are balancing two core principles: fostering an engaged citizenry and democracy, while also equipping learners with the skills needed for a prosperous economy. As EL rapidly expands in various forms – such as work-integrated learning like co-ops and internships, as well as community-engaged student placements such as service learning – universities are extending their reach far beyond the campus. The book asks: Should universities fully embrace EL? If so, how can institutions and faculty adapt to this fundamental shift in their core mission? Are community partners now equal collaborators with a voice in pedagogy and curriculum? And perhaps most importantly, are students better served by this emergent EL approach to teaching and learning? Experiential Learning and Community addresses these questions ... Unknown localization key: "more"

Engaged Urban Pedagogy
Engaged Urban Pedagogy presents a participatory approach to teaching built environment subjects by exploring 12 examples of real-world engagement in urban planning involving people within and beyond the university. Starting with curriculum review, course content is analysed in light of urban pasts, race, queer identity, lived experiences and concerns of urban professionals. Case studies then shift to focus on techniques for participatory critical pedagogy, including expanding the ?classroom? with links to live place-making processes, connections made through digital co-design exercises and student-led podcasting assignments. Finally, the book turns to activities beyond formal university teaching, such as where school-age children learn about their own participation in urban processes alongside university students and researchers. The last cases show how academics have enabled co-production in local urban developments, trained community co-researchers and acted as part of a city-to-city learning network. Throughout the book, editorial commentary highlights how these activities are a critical source of support for higher education.Together, the 12 examples demonstrate the power and range of an engaged urban pedagogy. They are written by academics, university students and those working in urban planning and place-making. Drawing on foundational works of critical pedagogy, they present a distinctly urban praxis that will help those ... Unknown localization key: "more"

Community-Based Mental Healthcare for Psychosis - Peter Dierinck
This eye-opening book explores the need for, and how to successfully organize, community mental health teams that provide in-home care and treatment for people experiencing mental health difficulties, particularly those suffering with psychosis. With an emphasis on community-based care and democratic psychiatry, the book presents two paradigm shifts necessary to bring mental healthcare directly into the community. The first is shifting perceptions from thinking of patients to recognizing those in need of care as members of the public moving away from a biomedical diagnostic approach. The second shift is the provision of support for the community environment, its families, friends, and neighbours to pave the way for hospitableness towards people with mental health issues in a way that encourages compassion, empathy, and a respect for differences. Through clinical case material, anthropological and phenomenological methods, and personal experience in community-based care, Peter Dierinck presents new models for sheltered housing and innovative ways for struggling individuals to secure paid work within a community system. Community-based Mental Healthcare for Psychosis is important reading for psychiatric professionals, clinicians, social workers, caregivers, and all mental health professionals looking after psychiatric patients with complex care needs.

Community Justice - John R. Hamilton Jr., Todd R. Clear, Tamera D. Jenkins
Community Justice discusses concepts of community within the context of justice policy and programs and addresses the important relationship between the criminal justice system and the community in the USA.Taking a bold stance in the criminal justice debate, this book argues that crime management is more effective through the use of informal (as opposed to formal) social control. It demonstrates how an increasing number of criminal justice elements are beginning to understand that developing partnerships within the community that enhance informal social control will lead to stabilization and possibly a decline in crime, especially violent crime, and make communities more livable. Borrowing from an eclectic toolbox of ideas and strategies – community organizing, environmental crime prevention, private–public partnerships, and justice initiatives – Community Justice puts forward a new approach to establishing safe communities and highlights the failure of the current American justice system in its lack of vision and misuse of resources. This book is essential for undergraduate and postgraduate students of criminology, law, and sociology. It provides detailed information about how community justice fits within each area of the criminal justice system and includes relevant case studies to exemplify this philosophy in action.

Community - J. Toby Reiner
People often yearn for a sense of belonging and connection: they long to live in a meaningful community. In the modern age, however, this often seems to be a chimera. Does modernity doom us to be atomised individuals? Does the promise of community imply a loss of autonomy and freedom and entrench inequality and hierarchy? In this book, J. Toby Reiner examines the debates surrounding community in modern political and social thought. He outlines how liberals, conservatives, socialists, and nationalists have historically conceived of the ties that bind together political communities, and how recent political philosophers such as Rawls, Taylor, Walzer, and Sandel have debated the nature and merits of community in the contemporary world. He goes on to consider how prominent conceptions of community relate to and are in tension with characteristically modern ideals such as equality and freedom. He deftly shows how a meaningful conception of community can be reconciled with the demands of modern liberal societies. Filled with real-life examples and thought-provoking discussions of the key debates, this book will be essential reading for students of contemporary political theory and philosophy and of sociology.

The Startup Community Way - Brad Feld, Ian Hathaway
The Way Forward for Entrepreneurship Around the World We are in the midst of a startup revolution. The growth and proliferation of innovation-driven startup activity is profound, unprecedented, and global in scope. Today, it is understood that communities of support and knowledge-sharing go along with other resources. The importance of collaboration and a long-term commitment has gained wider acceptance. These principles are adopted in many startup communities throughout the world. And yet, much more work is needed. Startup activity is highly concentrated in large cities. Governments and other actors such as large corporations and universities are not collaborating with each other nor with entrepreneurs as well as they could. Too often, these actors try to control activity or impose their view from the top-down, rather than supporting an environment that is led from the bottom-up. We continue to see a disconnect between an entrepreneurial mindset and that of many actors who wish to engage with and support entrepreneurship. There are structural reasons for this, but we can overcome many of these obstacles with appropriate focus and sustained practice. No one tells this story better than Brad Feld and Ian Hathaway. Creating Culture, Performing Community - Mintzi Auanda Martinez-Rivera
Creating Culture, Performing Community explores the ways in which the people of Santo Santiago de Angahuan, a P'urhépecha community in the state of Michoacán, México, create and curate their cultural practices and how, by doing so, they perform what it means to be an active member of the P'urhépecha community. Through a deep ethnographic account of ritual practices, author Mintzi Auanda MartÃnez-Rivera focuses on the tembuchakua, or wedding rituals, analyzing their creation, performance, and transformation within the P'urhépecha community. By proposing alternative approaches to understanding indigeneity, MartÃnez-Rivera showcases how people carefully transform their cultural practices and rearticulate and perform their identities. Thus Creating Culture, Performing Community has three main aims: to analyze how people create their own culture; to showcase how cultural practices are performed to reflect particular ideas of what it means to be a member of a community; and to move beyond limited understandings of indigenous identity and cultural practices.

Building Communities of Engaged Readers - Fiona M. Collins, Teresa Cremin, Sacha Powell, Marilyn Mottram, Kimberly Safford
Reading for pleasure urgently requires a higher profile to raise attainment and increase children’s engagement as self-motivated and socially interactive readers. Building Communities of Engaged Readers highlights the concept of ‘Reading Teachers’ who are not only knowledgeable about texts for children, but are aware of their own reading identities and prepared to share their enthusiasm and understanding of what being a reader means. Sharing the processes of reading with young readers is an innovative approach to developing new generations of readers. Examining the interplay between the ‘will and the skill’ to read, the book distinctively details a reading for pleasure pedagogy and demonstrates that reader engagement is strongly influenced by relationships between children, teachers, families and communities. Importantly it provides compelling evidence that reciprocal reading communities in school encompass:a shared concept of what it means to be a reader in the 21st century;considerable teacher and child knowledge of children’s literature and other texts;pedagogic practices which acknowledge and develop diverse reader identities;spontaneous ‘inside-text talk’ on the part of all members;a shift in the focus of control and new social spaces that encourage choice and children’s rights as readers. Mastering Community - Christine Porath
Despite our deep desire to feel a sense of belonging, many of us feel isolated. The rise of technology and modern workplace practices have led people to be even more disconnected, even as we remain constantly contactable. And as our human interactions have decreased, so too have our happiness levels. This is sparking a crisis in mental health that will have repercussions for years, leaving people lonelier and organizations less productive and profitable, too. What Christine Porath has discovered in her research is that leaders, organizations, and managers of all stripes may recognize there is a cost but have few solutions for how to implement the cure: Community. With her signature depth and grasp of research across myriad industries including business, healthcare, hospitality, and sports, Porath extrapolates from the statistics on the experiences of hundreds of thousands of people across six continents to show us the potential for change. Through uniting people and sharing information, unleashing them with autonomy, creating a respectful environment, practicing radical candor, providing a sense of meaning, and boosting personal well-being, anyone can help a community truly flourish. Creating Community - Simon Reed
There is much talk today of ''new ways of being church'' and ''new monastic spirituality''. As Simon Reed explored the Celtic roots of the Christian faith, in community with others who drew inspiration from our spiritual ancestors in the British Isles, he came to realise that the third millennium church has much in common with the first millennium church, and more importantly, much to learn from it. In Creating Community, he introduces us to a new but at the same time very old way of being church which is based upon three core elements: a Way of Life, a network of Soul Friends, and a rhythm of prayer. The book shows how the rediscovery of these elements by Christians today offers a vital key that opens up an ancient way for modern churches, one which not only helps to bring believers to lasting maturity but creates genuine and much-needed community in an increasingly fragmented world.

1 Corinthians: A Community in Dissent - Professor Ekaputra Tupamahu
1 Corinthians: A Community in Dissent approaches Paul’s letter not simply as a monologue from an authoritative apostle but as part of an ongoing, dynamic conversation within a diverse and complex early Christian community. Rather than assuming that Paul’s voice is the only word, this study pays close attention to the voices of the Corinthians, which often emerge through rhetorical clues, reported speech, and implied dialogue. By shifting the focus toward the community’s concerns and responses, the book encourages readers to see 1 Corinthians as a text shaped by negotiation, disagreement, and mutual engagement. Ekaputra Tupamahu offers a reading that resists portraying the Corinthians as passive recipients of correction or moral failure. Instead, he explores how their resistance and questions reflect meaningful engagement with issues of authority, identity, and communal life in the Roman imperial world. Without romanticizing either Paul or the Corinthians, the book opens space to consider the complexities of early Christian formation within settings of cultural hybridity and social inequality. In doing so, A Community in Dissent invites readers, especially students and scholars of the New Testament, to engage 1 Corinthians with historical sensitivity and interpretive humility.

Rethinking Community Resilience - Min Hee Go
Explores the unintended consequences of civic activism in a disaster-prone city After Hurricane Katrina, thousands of people swiftly mobilized to rebuild their neighborhoods, often assisted by government organizations, nonprofits, and other major institutions. In Rethinking Community Resilience, Min Hee Go shows that these recovery efforts are not always the panacea they seem to be, and can actually escalate the city's susceptibility to future environmental hazards. Drawing upon interviews, public records, and more, Go explores the hidden costs of community resilience. She shows that—despite good intentions—recovery efforts after Hurricane Katrina exacerbated existing race and class inequalities, putting disadvantaged communities at risk. Ultimately, Go shows that when governments, nonprofits, and communities invest in rebuilding rather than relocating, they inadvertently lay the groundwork for a cycle of vulnerabilities. As cities come to terms with climate change adaptation—rather than prevention—Rethinking Community Resilienceprovides insight into the challenges communities increasingly face in the twenty-first century.

The Case for Community Wealth Building - Joe Guinan, Martin O'Neill
Our broken economic model drives inequality and disempowerment, lining the pockets of corporations while extracting wealth from local communities. How can we reverse this? Joe Guinan and Martin O’Neill argue for an approach that uses the power of democratic participation to drive equitable development and ensure that wealth is widely shared. They show how this model – Community Wealth Building – can transform our economic system by creating a web of collaborative institutions, from worker cooperatives to community land trusts and public banks, that empower and enrich the many, not the few. This book is essential reading for everyone interested in building more equal, inclusive, and democratic societies.

The snowman smiles as the community members pause to admire their work.
