Počas života bol označovaný titulom „gaon“ (génius), čo poukazovalo na jeho brilantné intelektuálne schopnosti a rozsiahle vedomosti Tóry a židovského zákona.Dôležitou činnosťou hlavného bratislavského rabína Chatama Sofera bolo pôsobenie na čele Prešporskej ješivy. Ako roš ješiva ju pozdvihol na špičkovú úroveň a vo svojej dobe patrila k najprominentnejším vzdelávacím inštitúciám v židovskom svete. Za tri desaťročia jeho pôsobenia vychoval novú generáciu študentov – rabínov, ktorí jeho učenie šírili po celom svete. Iba v samotnom Uhorsku bolo asi sto rabinátov obsadených jeho žiakmi.Uplynulo viac ako 20 rokov od slávnostného otvorenia Pamätníka Chatama Sofera.
