Kde se ale tato divácká fascinace a mimořádná popularita vzaly? Co přesně v utváření samotného seriálu ji způsobilo? Proč fiktivní zobrazení většinově nedostupné a vzdálené životní zkušenosti amerických boháčů vzbuzuje takový ohlas a zájem i v kontinentální Evropě? Co na Dallasu přitahuje mužské publikum a co na něm tak fascinuje ženské divačky? Otázky takového druhu si na počátku svého výzkumu položila tehdy začínající nizozemská badatelka Ien Angová, autorka knihy Divákem Dallasu (originál z r. 1982 nese název Het geval Dallas, ve světě je však monografie známá spíše pod svým anglickým titulem Watching Dallas).
